Swim - Underwater Map! How about it SE!

Something was bugging me when i was looking at the last Live letter, where they showed the next Primal.

We cant swim, and there are so meany places where would be nice to do it.

And how about underwater map, where we fight and adventure, wouldn't be nice?

What do you think about it, and do you think SE will do it ?

Considering the fact that we cannot even swim in the game, I doubt they'll be adding an underwater area any time soon. However I'm sure that if they did, it would be gorgeous like the rest of the game!

I don't know how good of a game experience that would be since all of the underwater MMO experiences I've had have been a bit confusing and difficult to navigate (I'm looking at you WoW!)

Maybe it's something they'll think about in the future. For now, I do think they'll just work on expanding the land mass.

Nope. I've played Guild Wars 2. It had underwater combat which I really hated. It was clunky and so hard to navigate. Especially one dungeon where most of it was underwater... it was horrible.

I'll only accept Blitzball as something we do in water.

Wow, I completely blocked out the GW2 underwater stuff... *shudder* thanks for reminding me! xD

Yoshi P diiiid mention something about this a lonnnnnng time ago, but I think he mentioned he wanted something up in the sky first. GW2 >.> sure was something, but don't think that the mechanincs would be the same! Even if they don't make underwater combat, I'd like to at least be able to swim ; ; such beautiful water and I can't even swim in it.

If they add Blitzball, I can see people dedicating themselves to playing it. Would be pretty fun! Zanarkand was a pretty advanced place though, so I don't see how it would fall into the lore. The only ones capable of such technology were the allagans, and they're all dead.

Any underwater zone we are likely to see are probably going to be like the Underwater Temple or or such. Actual swimming combat would be very awkward with this style of gameplay. They would have to have completely separate everything to even look good, or play right. There are better things to spend their time doing than conjuring a whole new combat system that takes into consideration underwater positioning.

About the combat..just an idea of my !

It does not need to be different then what we have now...how about the mobs be in a platform and we swim to them....in some maps we have such sky platforms...how about such platforms under the water and mobs be there, and we fight them on the ground like we normaly do ?

No game has done underwater correctly in an MMORPG, so I really, really hope not. Let's let them get the overworld right first.

I dont understand you people, you say NO..but what is the reason for that..... none of you really gave some reasons for this.

Also what do you mean no MMO has ever done it right.....what is for you the right Underwater Map and Underwater Combat ?

And if big companys like SE dont try to do something new...from whom do you expect this ?

Im all for it, whatever fan service they can tie to under water content is all good to me.

The ESO Beta apparently lets you swim (no underwater combat as far as I know) and has good voice acting for even basic quests. I'm not particularly interested in elder scrolls games, but I wish we could just take that effort and put it in here...

I really don't mind underwater combat, but that's not the big thing I want out of water: I just want the god damned invisible walls gone. Let us swim so I don't have to deal with those annoying things.

An area similar in theme (if not looks) to the Underwater Alzadaal Ruins in FFXI though, that'd be cool. Like maybe an abandoned allagan research lab? (throwback to FF8 >.>)

I would like to see swimming and underwater areas to explore, although underwater fighting always turns out kinda lame. I would like to see spear fishing make a comeback though with underwater fishing, Swimming into shoals or taking down larger fishing Monster Hunter harpoon style.

Could be like Sea in XI, you know, where you didn't swim. It was like walking/running normally but everything had an underwater feel/look to it.

While I have actually enjoyed the underwater mechanics of games like GW2, because it actually gave the impression of my character really being underwater. I mean really, when you are in water of any kind about the only thing you can do fluidly is swim. So yeah.. fighting in the water would be slow somewhat in reality, and clunky because.. it's effing water. It slows you down, weighs you down (if you're wearing clothes other than a bathing suit or simple/light clothing).

That being said, I would like to see an underwater area, but honestly I don't think I'd want to swim through it. While it might be slightly immersion breaking, since this is a fantasy realm who's to say someone can't cook up some magic or magic device that lets us walk/run, breath and even talk normally while underwater. :)

Nothing good in gaming has happened underwater since ecco the dolphin.

Just chiming in to disagree with the above. GW2 has the best underwater combat in the genre. If FFXIV did decide to incorporate swimming (which is not going to happen, let's be serious), that's the model I'd want them to follow.

I chip in my vote for no underwater experience please...well i'm lying a little, i would like to see swimming/exploring underwater but for DoL classes only, exploring while gathering would be interesting in my opinion, besides...i think a roe in heavy pld armor underwater would be silly to see to say the least or anything in heavy armor really. XD

One of the problems with underwater combat is that it adds another axis to the system.
On ground you only really have to worry about the X and Y axis, sure sometimes there's ledges an rocks but the target itself is not really moving in the Z-axis (altitude).

Anyone that played Aion and experience the flight combat would know that this is extremely disadvantageous for melee who have short attack range and now having to worry about their target now being able to escape by going over or under them.

To add some realism for underwater... people swim right? The movement should decreased effectively making you pretty much shark bait. And I wouldn't even think about casting fire or thunder magic underwater.

No please. Ive yet to have seen any videogame- sngleplayer or multiplayer- do underwater scenes well at all.
Best keep the game on land...

I really enjoyed it in GW2 also. While I wasn't the best at fighting underwater, I still loved getting to explore down there and thought they did a good job with it. Also liked how their zones had just about 0 invisible walls, but that's another topic all together right there >>;

minimum swim can't harm (remind me FFX) , but something like open sea , pirate ships would be nice :D

Even if they never released an underwater area, I would settle for being able to swim at Mist or Costa Del Sol. Even if we were only treading water near the shore. *Sigh*

I don't think you need to have silly restrictions like overly slowed movement speed or ineffective spells. xD That's silly. It's a video game.

At the very least we need swimming. Get rid of the damn invisible walls around every body of water that's deeper than ankle height.

Anything to open up the game and make it more explorable. Sometimes it doesnt feel like an MMO with all the small zones, instancing, and invisible walls. Probably due to ps3 limitations.

Yoshi did say they are going to do both underwater and flight in different expansions.

This game needs something, it feels so small and confined, its another lobby waiting MMO for your instance queue to pop.

I miss big open world sandboxes, Im not saying this game needs to be a sandbox but sheesh give me a reason to go out and do something and give me the final fantasy feel of adventuring.

I remember Zelda ... we had to go underwater to unlock a dungeon. and to go unlock part of dungeon we had to go in water to unlock door. But we didn't had to fight IN the water. that would be a nice Idea of dungeon/////
And in the elder scrolls ..we had to reach some secret place by going underwater.

Hey, remember in a Final fantasy game where you'll be impacted if you wore certain armor in a magnet cave? Yeah what a silly restriction, its a video game.

Protip: It actually adds depth to a game if you have to actually take caution about your environment. No wonder MMOs are so lifeless nowadays lol.

They already stated it's due to THEIR DECISION to barrier off certain spots to prevent players from getting stuck or going to areas that has nothing there, i.e you see that ocean? Sorry to break it to you but there's nothing out there for you to "get to".

This is the only FF game I've ever played, but even still - yes, I think it's a silly restriction. Restrictions that make something less fun and more cumbersome are not good. Slowed movement and completely locking you out of certain spells (which would be quite killer to THM/BLM) are examples of those. And your argument isn't exactly endeared to me by using snide "protip" comments, just by the way. You can have an engaging MMO without painfully cumbersome gameplay mechanics.

Since you said its the only FF game then you wouldn't realize it's not as bad as you're thinking and quite staple in the series lol. I agree, you can have an engaging MMO without cumbersome mechanics...sadly we've yet to have one.

Basically you wouldn't be "locked" out, you'd get a potency hit (which means no facerolling, everyone wins). The armor thing in single player games wouldn't let you progress until you equipped a certain other types of armor (no iron/mythril etc) or the 'reverse' effect where weakest = strongest and strongest = weakest.

It's really not a restriction, it keeps a game from being shallow and lifeless, FF games have so many interesting mechanics people are afraid of.

I thought WoW's Vashj'ir was very well done and was an incredibly unique experience. One way to get around the speed limits could be what WoW did, which was give you a magical enchantment that speeds you up in the beginning of the zone and eventually give you an underwater mount.

That is not a good excuse for having terrible mechanics in any game, no matter how much of a tradition it is. A series of games is supposed to improve over time, not stagnate by being 'true' to a dated design choice.

Or if you don't think they have to improve, at least they have to evolve and adapt.

You said it yourself that this "staple" is not necessary for an engaging game. Considering it does put an unhappy burden on the player, don't you think it would be better to find new ways to bring life into the game, rather than rely on old traditions simply because that's how it's always been done? Stagnation isn't good. I know nostalgia is a big thing for FF folk, but really, ya'll gotta learn to let the games evolve.

Same here.

The god forsaken invisible walls are a real plague in FFXIV:ARR.
I'd rather die a thousand deaths than have to deal with those, especially since their placement is just a big inconvenience most of the time.
(I mean, come one! Encircling a rock with an invisible wall when I could climb on it and see around at a lower level than nearby platforms. Now that's retarded. -- visit the cemetery in Thanalan for a nice example)

Having swimming would certainly help eliminate most of the invisible walls. Only those at the extreme border of the areas should be kept (since there is nothing beyond).

I'm 100% FOR having swimming, underwater content, flying content and LESS INVISIBLE WALLS.
(I don't care if it doesn't happen this year, but at least SE should confirm it's on the roadmap.)
