Does FFXIV really need repair? Fix?

I've read the hintbar that pops when the game talks about "repairs" but honestly what's the point?

I know in Version 1.0, npcs could only repair a percentage of the gear's values, but in 2.0 I don't see the need of player repairs.

Maybe, someone can better explains the functions other than "player economy"?

I think it should be completely eliminated. Or, adjusted to make desireable. Maybe, rather than calling it "repair" the term should be "Enhanced" basically take a % above the 100% value up to 125%. Each 5% above 100% is the grade of Dark Matter required to improve gear "temporarily".

To be honest, whenever I complete a dungeon I just pop over to repair npc and pay whatever the price is no questions asked. It's never an outrageos price. And, I don't have to worry about giving another player my gear to fix.

I agree, IMHO the only utility to repair is to be able to do it within a dungeon or instance. But you can't since you can't change classes. soo.. uhhh

I think the largest repair cost I've seen is 2000 gil. If they made the player-repair mechanic anything like 1.0, no one would bother. And the one time I was in a dungeon that the tank's gear broke, I can't change jobs to fix. Just remove repair entirely from the game.

It needs to be here so they can get rid of gil. That's only reason why I see it being kept.

With the last update, SQEX has only given us more gil. Every mob in dungeons drops gil. I wonder how deeple the "wear" system in intergrated into mechanics that they can't "Drop" it.

Systems like this are only in game as a money sink, nothing more. Working as intended.

I wanted to look into repairing my gear but:
- buy the dark matter is more expensive than NPC menders
- it's super cumbersome to switch classes multiple time to cover all gear types

if SE has any plans to make this functionality useful, they need to:
- allow repairs any time as long as you have the crafting class leveled
- provide a UI similar to the NPC menders where you can instantly repair all gear and that just consumes dark matter instead of gils.

You do know the grade 5 dark matter only sells for 80 gil right? The average i90 piece will cost 150 or so gil to repair at an npc if the durability is super low.

I do agree with the repair all option but use our dark matter though. Even a right click option to repair would be good. Maybe limit it to use in the open world to avoid dungeon repairing.

Why limit to outdoor use only? I say go the opposite way - allow repairs to be done even if you're not currently set to the requisite job (as long as you have it sufficiently leveled). There's no dungeon severe enough that someone's equipment is going to break if they entered with it whole. So, basically, a run can be screwed just because a member forgot to patch up their gear before entering - something we're all human enough to do.

Assuming gear durability is something that's too difficult to remove from the game, this would at least give folks a chance to salvage a run that might otherwise fail due to this oddball happenstance.

Which you can't do with "used" / (even partialy) spiritbonded gear anyway. The proper way would be to have Repair Requests (the same way as the Meld Requests works now).

Personally - the biggest grip I have with (self) repair system is the "need" of having 5 tiers of dark matter which indeed (if you want to be really economic as of course otherwise you can use simply tier 5 matter for all repairs) means additional 4 losts taken from your inventory. That's purely insane - they should remove all the tiers, have just ONE dark matter and use it as a "currency" for repairs (even simplier would be simply to deduct cost of dark matter from you gil ballance every time you perform a repair) and set the "cost" of each tier of gear accordingly - like tier 1 will cost 1 of the "new" dark matter, tier 2 will cost 2 ... tier 5 will cost 5 "new" dark matters ... Alternativelly - move the dark matter (and if possible also the melding Carbonized matter) to the shards / crystal / cluster inventory tab so they'll not take additional valuable main inventory space. That would save up to 10 slots in the inventory.

And - indeed it would be nice not to be foreced to swap arround crafting classes to do the repairs but once you get into habit doing your own repairs it's not that much of hassle anymore and it's considerable saving too.

At release of 1.x we had to had leather patches and other mats to repair, later on we got the now known dark matter. The NPC's to that time repaired max 99% for an outragous price. This has to be known first. :)

Atm SE has lowered the repair and dark matter costs significantly just after release of ARR because the hasting majority wasn't able to earn money and the haven't been willing to earn money, dungeons mostly have been the top priority. But shortly after the rush they realized that FFXIV ARR isn't exactly the game they played before, be it WoW or LotrO or GW ...

Back in Beta we have been able to gather dark matter, so any repair would only had one cost... time.

I'd like to see that re-introduced, possibly with some of the improvements suggested above (only one dark matter, having matters stored in the shards tab, not needing to change to craft class to repair, being able to accept / perform repair requests for other player).

Those 5 grades are good, and might remain. If we get a little personal basar just like the one in the past would do it.
And repairing is crafting and should remain crafting.

What I try to say is, don't let us ease all and everything. A bit of complexity can't be bad. Just look how many people whish back the crafting (or parts of) we had in 1.0/1.x

Even when you get used to it. It is still a Hassle. Especially if you swap classes alot, seend doing so rearranges all you equips in the armory chest.

Its definately a savings though, since a buy them with GC seals. Actually dont have any other use for seals.

This here is actually the only issue I have with the repair system, Having all DoH at 50, it's still a annoying having to change to 4-5 different crafting classes just to repair all my equipped gear. If I could do it from my current DoW/DoM just for having the requisite DoH at 50, I'd repair my own gear all the time, I have np keeping a stack of Grade 5 Dark Matter in a far off corner of my pouch. And it would easily be cheaper than going to the NPC.

My only problem with the repair system is that you can't request other people repair your stuff like you can request melds.

Seriously why is that not a function it should be a function that would be so good.

This is stupid. Don't remove repair. So what if it doesn't save *that much gil* vs going to a mender npc? You don't take something out of the game because it's NOT gamebreaking. That'd be like saying "Oh, we should remove auto-attacks from the game because they don't do a lot of damage."

It doesn't hurt you that players with crafts levelled can fix their gear cheaper than others.

Repairing isn't even a gil sink though. You get dark matter for free from your GC. Just do some FATEs or sell some green/pink dungeon gear and BAM! 99 of every tier Dark Matter. The only gil sink is having an NPC repair, and that's dirt cheap.

Allow repairing to be done outside of the class required to repair it (you just need to have the class at the appropriate level and the tools required to use its abilities), allowing repairs to be done during dungeons.
Remove the need for Dark Matter entirely and swap out the main skill bar for the appropriate repair class bar and repair the item (in the same way you'd make an item).
Boom, repair system is now a viable thing that can stay in the game.

Yeah unless I can't afford the repair fee or player repairing gives more benefits (like durability would drop much slower or so) I think I won't try to find a player to do this for me =/

Just make it so we can repair gear on any class without having to switch. There, fixed. Make the game check if we have the appropriate job. Remove the xp you get from repairing if you need to, nobody gives a crap about the chump change 2k xp you get from repairing when you can get like 300k from a triple turn-in leve.

With mats
As example, to repair cloth armors you would need clothes. To repair leather armor you would need leather.

As if the 2 seconds to switch the class and open up the repair window is too long for you.

A real fix would be the possibility to sort the equip in the repair window by the durability. Equip with the lowest durability in first place so we can repair from the top to the bottom until the durability on the following equip begin to be at 50% or higher.

Actually, the reason to want to be able to repair anything based on your class levels, rather than having to actually BE that class, has nothing to do with saving time changing classes. Instead, it has everything to do with those dumb "uh oh - he/she/I forgot to repair, now we're halfway through a dungeon and all the tank's gear is broken" moments.

Yes, everyone should repair everything between dungeons - but how many actually do? Being able to repair anything that your classes support (no repairing high level jewelry if your GSM level is only 10) without having to change to that class, something you cannot do in a dungeon, allows you to be a corrective when the preventative isn't done.

I think we should be able to repair in dungeons. I mean let's face it, we've all entered a dungeon with gear at less than 10% because we forgot to repair before we went in. So, either allow us to repair our own gear without switching to a DoH (Only available during dungeons), or allow us to make repair kits of various strength such as 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% durability repaired and let any job be able to use them.

Makes sense in the lore too. People who wore heavy armor may not know how to create it, but they know how to maintain it. Soldiers are not gunsmiths, but they know how to clean, maintain and perform field repairs on their weapons.

I cant believe they drop cost of repairs still. Now its just too cheap. And please, allow us to repair everything in armoury or inventory at once. How hard is it to make that work? get on it SE.

Like someone else mentioned, repairing saves very little gil, so the main benefit to having them is to be able to repair anywhere without a ton of hassle. I don't want to shuffle between 5 different classes shuffling through 20+ item lists to repair stuff, I don't want to wait a full minute after I'm done repairing for my GCD to charge, and most of all, I'd like to actually be able to repair when I'm in an instance or dungeon since that's where it'd really come in handy.

And also mentioned was repairing after every instance- since you'll actually lose money if you repair at the wrong time, it encourages you not to just repair after every instance, but rather wait until the bar is something like 40% or lower. They already made crafting damn near useless, at least make the one thing that's actually unique to leveling it be available when we actually need it.

The only other way I can think of for them to fix is to add Dark Matter fragments that cost 10% of the current cost that repair for 10% per use or whatever. Better yet, just remove Dark Matter altogether and just let people with the appropriate craftskill repair for 50% of the cost of the NPC. The only reason Dark Matter exists is because it was there in 1.0, and it was only there because the early game had that "use a real crafting mat to repair" thing. If you were designing a game from the ground up the whole Dark Matter idea would just seem like an unnecessary addition. Either way the current system is garbage when you consider one of the main focuses of ARR was to correct the terrible UI 1.0 had.

I keep seeing people quote that repairing your own gear doesn't save much.

It's like half the price. I don't know about anyone else, but my weekly repair costs are atrocious, so cutting that clean in half is a godsend.

It was worth a lot more before they reduced repairing prices, now you'll save maybe 500 gil per repair session, and that's being generous (You don't actually cut it in half unless you wait until the item is nearly broken anyway). If you are dying a lot it either means you are bad at the game or you play the game enough that repair costs should be trivial to you. The opportunity cost is also a consideration, which is part of why it being such a hassle makes no sense. The fact that you have a crafter leveled to be able to repair means you already have access to something that can make more money in that time, even in the crappy XIV economy.

I dislike the repair system, because it's Inventory -5. If Dark Matter had its own seperate inventory, just as Crystals do, I wouldn't mind so much. As it is, I only bother keeping Grade 5 Dark Matter around, which means I still need to go to an NPC to repair gear under level 50 anyway.

By the same token, it'd be nice if Carbonized Matter had its own inventory. Maybe shared with Dark Matter.

And fishing bait. That seriously needs its own inventory, too.

I'd balance repair without switching to class with not being able to 100% repair stuff... more like 25% or so... it's a field fix not something that should be 100%. So if it breaks(0%) you can field fix it to 25% finish whatever you're doing then you can do a proper repair.

And I agree bait, carbonized and dark matter should have their own tab. Actually for bait we want a tacklebox(separate inventory). But anything with the same utility as shards/crystals and such should be managed the same way.

Not to revive a dead thread, but I can see repair being "useful" if function was change to something like "Sanction" from FFXI and FFXIV company gear. You'd have 3 basic ranges of "gear conditions" the same, 0-100%, 101-200% and a new 201-300%. The lowest range your gear would received a "sanction" debuff or -5% to all stats, The second would be "normal" no added bonus, the third tier would be player only repairs (self of other) that uses 1 basic repair dark material, but would be based on craft levels every 10 level. The various tier would require higher skill and higher amounts of the base repair dark material.
Third teir repairs would grant added bonus of 3% experience bonus and maybe 1-3% status buff while in effect.

While it sounds like a good idea, repair is simply a gil-sink and nothing else. If repair was gone, they'd probably just up all teleport fees to place the gil sink somewhere else.
