Severe lag in instances since Jan 14

Since tuesday approximately this lag has appeared out of nowhere. Everything was always fine, and now suddenly out of nowhere I'm in an instance and people will freeze for a few seconds and then everything speeds up to catch up. Sometimes it's short, like half a second, or a second. When it gets extreme I've seen it last 20 seconds or more. I've noticed something curious: it only happens in instances (like garuda ex, or ifrit ex). However if I'm in the Gridania marketplace, where there are lots more people walking around and interacting than inside an instance, everything goes smoothly and there's no freezing/catching up.

I downloaded and installed WTFast and this solved the issue. However I don't think I should have to pay for a third party service to use a game I'm paying for, when there have never been lag issues till two days ago. Another thing to report is that my ping to the montreal datacenter has remained unchanged; it's the same as it was before the trouble started. Somehow I think the problem is with SE's instance servers. I've also heard from numerous other users they're having this same problem, and it started at the same time. The problem is not with my ISP as I've tested ping and lost packets and bandwidth with other services and everything is fine.

You wouldn't happen to be a Sky Broadband customer, would you?
Pretty much everyone who is with Sky has been having the exact issue you described (including myself), and I really hope something gets done about it soon.

guys im a sky broad band user and im also having this issue.

I have had no lag since starting from beta p4 and since monday it is terrible. i can barley play the game ive had to miss coil groups
as to not get my group wiped by dying in Aoe's that appear after im dead.

i hope this gets sorted does anyone know why this is happening with sky or has anyone phoned them yet?

I have exact same issue but:
1) I live in Italy
2) My ISP is MC-Link

I didn't have "any lag problem" except from standard (titan HM small latency and such), but never had any real issue.
Now, I have people stopping for 2-3 seconds (while I can keep moving) and then everyone restart moving (fast), this keeps happening more or less, all time.

I'm having the exact same thing happen. Lag spikes started 2-3 days ago. Connection has been flawless prior to this.

I'm also in the UK and use Sky Broadband.

Sky customer here and yeap, been lagging non fibre just ADSL...

Same here. Sky Broadband customer, no issues with lag until Tuesday; and only in Duty Finder. As healer, I can't currently use DF until its sorted :/

I believe BT and Sky share some infrastructure though.

Sky are aware as are se.I rang se last night and they asked if i was with sky.nearly all of their calls were from sky customers and they are looking into it,,apparently . Rang sky twice last night and the second time she said would this game be arr by any chance. My son is playing other online games in same house with no issues. The more people that phone sky and se about this the better.

Same issue. BT broadband. Other FC members in England having real problems too that were fine before. Were prob being throttled ......24/7 on FFXIV

Considering my bandwidth is not trottled at all (I can download full bandwidth with p2p at any time), this is definitely a SE issue.
I live in Italy and my provider is MC-Link, and I definitely have the same issues which started around monday: 2-3 seconds lag spikes every 10 seconds, more or less. Considering I never had such a problem, is something recent.
Oh obviously it's not and FPS issue because I can move while lagging.

Sky Fibre customer here, been having problems since monday. I'm using a free trial of WTFast atm until this is sorted, shouldn't need to use this as i've never had this problem before. I did a tracert test for SE in Montreal and it clearly shows the time outs, I get so many ping spikes from there also. While you're fixing your servers SE I highly recommend you actually place EU servers in EU or else people will get fed up of your BS and play something else with reasonable ping.

Rude much? I have been getting this also and i have done extensive tests and NOTHING shows up out of the ordinary, I am on Sky and both Sky and SE are aware of it.

That is my tracert and it doesn't show up anything from what you say, I do however think it is a SE issue, even though i know tons of Sky customers are affected, and a few others since around Tuesday, please fix this :)

Is tracert extensive testing?

I completely understand where HaydenJD is coming from, why would you pay a company money for a service that you can't use?

Its not just sky customers, there are a variety of customers from a variety of geographical areas experiencing the problems of lag and disconnections. Square have already said that they will not be doing anything about problems outside of their own infrastructure.

So basically they don't care about their customers. I have seen other games which are impacted by this issue that have their servers hosted in the same area as Square (Mechwarrior online, star trek online) that have reports of the same issues.

Over the past 24 hours, the average packetloss for ae-11-11.car2.Montreal2.Level3.net (4.69.141.1) has been 16%. During the prime US hours the packetloss has capped at 41%.

Square need to call Level3.net and explain that their service (FF14) is being impacted by their poorly managed network.

Yeah i understand where he is coming from too, just there was no need to be rude about it. I have actually done a few more tests etc to check it wasn't my end, like using thinkbroadbands monitor and pinging the server 1000 times etc, although there was packet loss when i done that 1% and 2% isn't going to create the probs we are seeing ingame.

Oh and before some wise person (I know you're trolling this thread) wants to point out the packetloss on hops 3,4 and 5, I am aware that there is packetloss there and it doesn't make my point any less valid. The behaviour that people (myself including) are seeing seems pretty co-incidental with the hop in montreal.

Possibly, when im using my neighbours wifi (Thanks big pool guy!) its fine, chances are your WTFFast connection takes a different route.

Took out some of the first hops, don't want to get the guy angry and actually put a password on his AP.

Same issue here, Verizon Fios east coast. WTFast fixes it but I'm not paying for something that I shouldn't have to.

Yep, I'm with sky and I've had hideous lag now for about 4 days......I'm getting severe spikes all over the place though....not just in dungeons but out in the world.....I'm supposedly on their top end adsl line....supposedly...........

Yeah its not just instances, its everywhere from Walking around town, to fighting in the fields, to extracting copper from the copperbell mines, to abusing the marketboard.

Sky ADSL Broadband user here, same problem. It happen since beta and this lag spike/packet loss start from 1 evening and can last a whole week. Glad my contract expires next month. Movin to VM 120m.

They are looking into it.I have just come off the phone.I was promised yesterday an email would be sent to the tech team and it has been, it's been circulated today and is now reaching departments.They are aware of the mass problem and its being escalated to level 2 to start the investigation.It's just a matter of time now.

Has anyone considered contacting Level 3 the owners of the server directly? To find out there thoughts?

Two more customers here where the game's been pretty much unplayable since the 14th January. Before the "oh change your ISP SE is awesome lolz lolz lolz" bunch come along - this was previously not an issue, and the ISPs suffering these issues recently probably consist of 2/3 of the largest ISPs in the UK (Sky and BT). Seems pretty bonkers to want to ignore this issue really and remain silent on it when it's affecting so many people - plus those on US ISPs hit by the same problem.

Apparently when there was a similar issue in Japan SE were on the phone to the relevant party pretty sharpish - but the fact that not one single SE rep seems prepared to even come out with a "hey we know about this - we're trying to get it all worked out bear with us" is pretty damned ominous really.

Letting it run till the end of this subscription month but if it's not worked out by then - will be two subscribers lost in this house because why pay for something you can't access most of the content in?!

Step it up SE and at least let people know you're aware of what's going on - that's not much, it requires a few taps on a computer keyboard to do that bit so people don't feel completely ignored.

Thanks to the people pushing Sky to try to get it resolved at their end though - I can't make the calls since they've got the most ridiculous policy going regarding who they'll take calls from - despite being told several times to take from me OR the other half they'll only speak to him!
