Me. I can't stand Macuahuitls or the head/body armors. I would rather be undergeared for a few levels, than use those pieces.
Where are our katanas, bastard swords, basket-hilt claymores, Northman broadswords...?

I skipped Paladin Darklight Armor and Flanchard because they look absolutely terrible. And yes, I skipped all other Heavy Armors/Flanchards of that design as well as all Macuahuitls, too. And Subligars.
Same as Riepah... I will be skipping the Warrior Darklight armor because I do not wish to be a tincan.
I'm wearing the notoriously ugly Heavy Allagan Cuisses + Warrior Jackboots combo. So...nope!
I love being a scholar but I hate their clothes. Until I either get the allegan gear or vanity slots come out im gonna be hating how I look. I would honestly skip the year and wear CTT stuff, but I haven't gotten it yet and I kind of need to be geared for BC turn 4 (where allegan healing tunic drops). Which actually brings up a question, has anyone heard how vanity slots will work?
Personally I don't mind flanchard and never got the hate against them.
Though on that same note I refused to play my scholar until I got darklight and don't want to buy any myth gear for mine (especially that hideous hat and shoes).
My pet tank calls the Macuahuitls "cricket bats" but at the same time is a conscientious dude who'll always wear the best gear available . . . so I over-melded a HQ Macuahuitl for him just because I knew he'd never be able to pass up using it.
Poor guy took nearly ten levels to find a better sword. Muh ha ha ha!
was going to casually craft my GLA/MRD armour every upgrade since I got Armourer but...
got to level 25...
... crafted the pants that are tied with the boots... no problem looks great!
... crafted the notorious tincan because wanted to try it out... sold it for 7k after 5mins xD
I'll never EVER wear this ugly top that ties the head with the body piece, I#d rather use the scalemail, even if I lose out parry.
Might craft the militia cur because it looks pretty good, then keep it until i get the Labyrinth drop or Myth gear.. there's no way I'm getting this fugly DL tincan sorry!
As for the weapons, not a big fan of the scimitars and daggers, the rest is alright.
I like the macuahuitl. I don't see them in too many games, so it's nice to get something a bit different.
I have skipped pieces of armor that are ugly. I also usually skip the combined pieces of armor, because they're ugly and also because they're annoying to deal with in inventory and to upgrade.
Macuahuitls look like hazing paddles and therefore comical. If I find a piece of armor or weapon ugly, I try to find something else about it I can make fun of and make it comical if it's an upgrade. Case and point, the i90 primal WHM staff. I'm not going waste 900 myth on a side-grade but that staff sure is ugly. Everyday, my friends I joke about it saying it's a fetus on a stick or something.
WAR
Head, somewhat its look good but combine with others set is so damn ugly, skipped
Body, its look awesome on male but never look cool on female, I want to trash this shit
Feets, look ugly OR look so cute but I skipped
PLD
Body, the fact is shoulders never got fix, its always wrong axis, same with Allagan armor's shoulders
I will avoid Heavy Darklight Armor for as long as physically possible because having my character unable to LOOK FORWARD in combat breaks immersion.
Also it looks dumb.
Anyone have a can-opener?
Wearing Gear because of the look and not the stats
lol... wait for vanity slots
Any heavy armour set - for the reasons others have mentioned. I look like a cat in a can wearing that! And the def bonuses are somewhat mitigated by not being able to equip head and legwear either, so I'd rather have gear in those slots to balance out a 'normal' body piece. It's why I basically stuck with breastplate armour and tabards (the later usually while solo) right through to 45 when I equipped the mosshorn scalemail HQ until my AF body. And I don't care what anyone says, I refuse to get the Darklight Heavy Armour. I'm saving my tomes for AF2 instead of that ugly hunk of scrap metal.
try adding the heavy allagan legs and you'll know true horror.
P.S The best combination I've seen for crafted armor is seen is this combination (disregard the colour. I've done it in black and it looks badass. It's a shame its only ilvl 55)
Yes quite often, I too went from Hopilite Chest to Valor Surcoat, as I could not face wearing the Darklight tin can, I did have to concede on the legs though, I am wearing Darklight but I soooo hate them Hehe. I will have a new issue next week, Valor Cuisses or Relic +1.. OMGZ
Wooden swords, nuff said.
I actually like the darklight on warriors, looks brutal with the axe. Not so much on paladin.
Skipped Summoners head piece at end game, i know it's BiS but i hate it, even with hiding it i feel hideous, sticking to allagan, That 1 piece isn't gonna do much anyways
the daggers gld and pld can use (wtf)
the wooden paddles.
also tin cans.
I really want to skip Darklight, but I know it's an eventuality. It looks absolutely horrendous. How the hell did that set even manage to get through the design process? You'd think that at least someone would point out that you can't even look at what you're hitting.
Yup, Heavy Darklight Armor
Skipped Macuahuitls, daggers, and any combined armor pieces. I am very content to be wearing a full HQ Militia set and using an Aeolian Scimitar until I get CT gear. Besides, last I checked, a Gladiator needs to be mobile, so why would they wear something that very clearly impedes both movement and vision?
I did all I could to avoid getting the Darklight Eyepatch of Aiming but I couldn't see myself burning Myth Tomes on the Bard's Chapeau before the Summoner's Doublet. Why Eyepatches, SE?
bought myth helmet first week so i didnt have to wear the tincan
ended up wearing as PLD anyway
Just a question from someone who hasn't played since launch, are there any good alternatives to Darklight that aren't so damn ugly? If so, what's the best way to get them?
Mittens. Like... really... mittens? No.
But I'd imagine that in order to get to CT, you need darklight anyway, right? Not to mention the ridiculous one-piece a week restriction. Or does CT work fine with entry level endgame gear?
In all seriousness though, I'm completely clueless as to how such an awful design could make it into the game, let alone as endgame armour.
For tanks at least, CT works fine with AF and DL accessories, maybe some dungeon drops. Even that's probably not required unless every tank is geared like that. The only time all the tanks are actually tanking is on (some of) the trash (and bone dragon, kind of). Just let the better-geared tanks do the heavy lifting while you DPS and click on your tower.
Skipping gear for vanity reasons... never.
If I only played solo, I'd consider it, but the "it's my monthly fee!" argument dies the moment my vanity makes life harder on 3-23 other people. They're paying their monthly fee too, and I doubt anyone wants their time wasted by an under-geared player who's too concerned about how they look.
That's not to say that some gear isn't unfortunate to look at, but you'll out-level lowbie gear fast enough to tolerate it, and all of the ilvl 90 gear looks fine, so any ugly gear is intermediary.
I actually like the heavy DL gear (and bought all three pieces), but I've never actually worn it. I started as a Dragoon and instead of buying his Relic +1 (I was sick of DPS and slow queues), I finished leveling my Warrior and bought the myth chest piece. I had full Hoplight already from playing my Dragoon so much. My Warrior did wear the leg/boot combo, but he never wore the chest piece. I then bought the DL chest piece because my Paladin was getting up there in levels, but I had unbelievably good luck in CT and my first three runs (3 weeks) awarded me the chest, gloves and boots. So, he'll never wear the DL set either.
I can see the argument for both sides. I want to enjoy the game and I can only do so if I enjoy seeing my character in action. Personally, I skipped over DL gear for two reasons: being unable to upgrade to higher ilvl gear without obtaining the two corresponding pieces and it looked terrible.
At the end of the day, the few extra stats from DL gear is not going to cause wipe or make a run any harder. The real difference maker is good play.
I skipped over any two-piece top, e.g. High Mythril Armor, Darklight Armor. For the legs, I've accepted I already have thunder thighs, but with Heavy Darklight/Darksteel Flanchards, mobile suit thunder thighs are nuts!
But yes, I've skipped over some gear if it was too ugly, except for spruce shoes. I kept those around too long. On Bard, I dislike the Ballad feet so much, I went out and purchased i70 Darklight feet.
