2 button MNK macro?

So someone mentioned something to me, that you can make 2 MNK macros for positional only, so I did it. Here is how they look


Flank
/ac "snap punch"
/ac "twin snakes"
/ac "dragon kick"

Rear
/ac Demolish
/ac "true strike"
/ac Bootshine



So with this setup, you just press the appropriate button based upon which position you are in (flank, or rear), to always be in teh correct postion. However the downside is it makes it more difficult to monitor the DOT's and Buffs, like Twin Snakes/Demolish, and obviously Demolish should ideally be cast only when it is not up.

HOwever, this does simply the core rotation from 6 buttons, to 2 buttons really. Since sometimes things move so fast with GL3 and boss movement, I find the tradeoff may be worth it guaranteeing correct position. Opinions on this?

This topic seems to pop up every month or so. The problem with these macros is they tend to fire off the wrong move a lot of the times. Then when they do work they don't use the moves at the same speed as not having them macro'd as they won't queue the move before hand. So in short; only use these types of macros if you are really lazy and don't mind being sub-par at your class.

The only macro i use as monk is:

/macroicon "Featherfoot"
/ac "Featherfoot"
/ac "Haymaker"

I maybe should do it this way tho: (because sometime i evade even when featherfoot isn't up)

/macroicon "Featherfoot"
/ac "haymaker"
/ac "featherfoot"

it's allow me to save 1 square on the skillbar :o

As far as Macros go, I dont use any on my rotation skills. Too situational, and will mess with the skills themselves. With fast skill speed, i tend to activate the skill a few milliseconds before it is ready to use. Macro'd skills prevent this.

If you're looking for some general macros for Monk, i use

Fists (if i know ill be taking damage)

DoT (I apply this the same way to Touch of Death, but with different wait period)

/echo <se.1-12> recast DoT

Any macro'd skills i use while that Waiter is going for my Dot will cancel it, and i wont hear that echo. Thats another reason why i dont use macros in my rotation skills

There is a way to sorta help the misfires of the macro. It goes something like add 2 lines to the recheck of the skill before it fires.

/ac "twin snakes"
/ac "snap punch"
/ac "twin snakes"
/ac "snap punch"
/ac "dragon kick"

This way it double checks the skill before the first one is used. But still fires them in order.

maccro for monk are bad.you shouldnt use maccro for rotation.

if you want to be a fail monk ,use them.

I did some testing killing some time before work with this kind of macro:

/ac "Snap Punch" <t>
/ac "Twin Snakes" <t>
/ac "Dragon Kick"<t>

Here is the results:

1: Represents the Macro going Dragon Kick -> Twin Snakes -> Snap Punch.

0: represents the Macro going Dragon Kick -> Dragon Kick or Dragon Kick -> Twin Snakes -> Dragon Kick


This was tested on a Training Dummy just spamming the macro none stop. The macro seems effective for the most part but if you get a triple 000 fail then Greased Lightning would drop

Hmmmm magical idea, i must test this

I leave out Dragon kick and bootshine. I only use the macros to save space. I can still use any skill in any order.

works fine, just don't include Dragon Kick or Bootshine in your macro, it can mess up too much.

Yeap Just manually press Bootshine and Dragon kick, Leave the others to macro. Work 100% of the time.

stop using lame maccro and play the game like a man.....how hard it is to press 2-3 keys instead of 1 but be able to use any skill,anytime, depending of the situation and not end up with shity dps because your screwing ur rotation(not optimised) with stupid maccro?

Most of the people here clearly cannot. They are trying to set up complicated macros that like to break to do things they could easily do without the macros... I think these guys work the the US government.

Guess we all know now why monk got a damage buff after reading this thread :).

haha...yeah

Being ignorant and not using the macro no one can stop you for that. As said you cannot do Step 2 and 3 without the perquisite form, hence why Step 2 and 3 are made into a macro. You still have to manually do Dragon Kick, Bootshine and do your positions. Pressing all your keys is good and all but this macro accounts for zero delay in between skill and more time for other thoughts.

While I agree with them that some macros are really ridiculous and make it obvious why so many monks perform poorly I also agree with you about their ignorance towards the actual useful macros.
Monks are one of the few jobs that can actually use macros without totally screwing up their combos because of our stances without any DPS loss.

Thought is easy as you have atleast 2 seconds to choose between two skills in most cases.

Forgive me if im wrong but, I thought any macro wasnt 100% accurate when it comes to skill speed, that no matter what you do in a macro some delay off the exact speed is always inevitable? (macros cant account for exact milliseconds and only works at certain milestones.)

And tbh... monk does not require much thought, its all reactions and muscle memory tbh + set learned patterns.

Perhaps someone can clarify? I dont really see a benefit to using these macros but I guess if the negative I think exists does not exist then it really does not matter.

Perhaps it does not since you are just spamming one button twice instead of using two buttons once, though I really do fail to see how this could be useful. I use qer and 123 for my main two combos and after some play time its 99% muscle memory so....

The GCD in this game is so damn long you really dont need any extra help.

Macros will always yield sub-optimal results. Do yourself a favor, and learn to play without them.

The one i've listed earlier is great for when your skillbar (like mine) is full and your finger can hardly reach all the skills.
The one i've saw for Fist of Fire/Earth looks good too, but i've set all the Fist of **** into F1/2/3 so it doesn't matter for me.

All monk's abilities are usefull. If you don't use macro, either you are playing with a mouse/keyboard with more buttons that the majority have.
Some people that don't use macro can also be more bad that thoses that use them, i bet a lot of Monk never switch to Fist of Earth to handle Big/2H damages.

Not exactly.

A macro to use 2 skills for let's say a BLM is like this

/ac Fire <t>
/wait 2 (2.5 is considered as 2, no decimals)
/ac Fire <t>

This macro has no loss in speed since second fire will be queued 0.5 sec before the actual cast the same as pressing the button

If i want to cast 3 spells with BLM the macro must be like this

/ac Fire <t>
/wait 2
/ac Fire <t>
/wait 3
/ac Fire <t>

Last fire will lose dps for being late

The MNK can use different type of macro tanks to you not be able to use a command

/ac "snap punch"
/ac "twin snakes"

This one will nearly istantly activate both skills. If first one can start the second one will give you error. If the first can't be used for wrong stance it will activate the second one

This type of macro bear no delay since you can push the button 0.5 sec before the GCD is refreshed and the skill will be used as soon as possible

I use a gamepad, don't use macros and still make use of all my abilities (including changing of Fists for certain situations like movement or big damage) just fine.

Any chance that you could share your xhotbar set ups? I'm on PS3 and have had to map some of my weaponskills to D-Pad buttons which I hate. I switched to MNK for my Coil team and am still optimizing.

On a Pad, you can reach every button.
On a keyboard, i can hardly reach 6,7,8,9,10,11,12...
So i'm using instead, Ctrl / Alt + A,E,R,1,2,3,4,5 and F1,F2,F3 and ²
So we are trying our best without macro, but why not using them when it's helpfull and not really brainless ?

I understand what you're saying, and I'mma let you finish,

BUT

With mantra being level 42 and available as cross class, there are a lot of people who end up leveling pugilist/monk all the way to 42 without any intention to actually play the class after that.
Before you get all your skills and enough skillspeed, a lot of the advice I see people give just doesn't apply.

One thing I found to be a massive help was the additional L2+R2 Crossbar you can set up. I have all my AoE attacks set to that in addition to long cooldown abilities and Fists of Fire/Earth. That way you free up your regularly used abilities for L2 and R2.
