Story Fight: The Heretics Among Us

I got to this fight at level 40, tried it what must have been about 10 times but either I died or the NPCs died and the duty failed.

I tried different strategies, read about it on here and other forums and even levelled to 41 thinking the extra stats might make a difference but I tried it a few more times today and there was no change.

I thought it might be my gear. My average gear level says 34 but there's nothing else I can buy that is any better than what I have now.

I don't claim to be the best at these types of games, this is my first one, but am I missing something!?

I struggled with this a lot... I can't remember it exactly, but what helped me was sleeping the mobs. Really helps!

I've tried that, sleeping some of the first 3 so the NPC doesn't lose as much HP. And then later when the dragon is following me everywhere I try and steer it from the NPC that loves to stand in the AOE while sleeping the 2 that turn up then

Anyone any ideas/tips?

Unlock Physic from arcanist and toss them a few years?

I might be completly off here but if it is the fight that I think it is you are spose to get the wyvern to body slam the enemy npc to make him die faster. Once again this is only if you are doing the thing I am thinking of and I am not a complete idiot xP

I've just joined the Arcanist guild and got Physick, tried healing the archer and other guy before the guy turned into a dragon so we'd have more of a chance. I ran around so the dragon would follow me and take the heat of the NPCs but because I can't move and cast a spell at the same time I couldn't heal myself and died :(

It's the first I've heard anyone mention that Mazi but I'll give it a go!

Can't say I remember this fight too well but from what I do remember keeping the archer alive is a huge help. Use whatever debuffs and DoTs you can on the dragon and kite him around the npc's.

I think this fight is just really really poorly balanced for the level. You want to try to keep the NPCs alive by killing the early mobs fast to maximize your DPS and keeping the dragon and add facing away from the healer (and stay away yourself if possible since it does that ground AOE). Otherwise you just have to try to stay alive. I remember it seemed to depend a lot on luck for me when I finally cleared the battle.

The other thing is that the healer helps, but you must watch your own and the tank character's HP because he will do absolutely nothing for long periods of time when he's needed for no reason that I can comprehend. Also the tank is absolutely useless against the dragon. Good luck.

Am I wearing good gear, is there anything better I could buy to help me? I only recently got the weapon, and the cowl I got from a dungeon it's similar to one I was wearing before and it seems like it's quite powered like nothing else I saw came close to it in stats so I've been wearing it for a while now.

have a look on a site like xivdb to see where you can improve your gear a little. No huge improvements but every little helps. You may need to do dungeon runs to get gear much better than the stuff you have though. Not sure if it'd be an advantage levelling whm to lvl 8 for protect and going in as thm rather than blm or not.

Edit: On second thought, Google "The Heretic Among Us FFXIV guide" and there are like, 4-6 video guides of the quest.

I had a lot of trouble with this quest as well when I was lvling my BLM. Always kill ads first, and once the boss turns into a dragon, kite it and kill everything with Scathe and use Sleep if you have the time to pull it off. It feels very cheap, but it gets the job done.

Should try this on WHM. I think it took me around 10 tries for each part of this section of the story. I think the only time I used food in a fight too.

I think the only time I've died on a quest as a WHM or Scholar was one of my CNJ quests at like, level 25.

Definitely one of the more irritating fights. Don't have a strategy really, I just threw myself at it till I beat it. (can't remember the max level that you can be for it, but that might help as well though it means grinding a bit)

I don't really remember this fight, but if you're BLM and there's a Wyvern is it possible to sleep it?

You could always grind Cutter's for better accessories and SV for some gear. Dungeon gear > Market gear. What I remember of that fight is having to kite it and cure myself a few times.

Been using <mo> since day one basically. The problem is casting when the dragon is trying to eat you.

Just want to add <mo> is like a requirement for WHM's on PC if they want to cure fast. The only thing that sucks is <lt> and what not do not trigger with <mo>.

I think I figured out that running into him would cut off some of his casts, but it has been a really long time. I recall having a much worse time with the "execution" part of the questline earlier. Honestly, I hated Coerthas and most of the quests, so I've blocked them out of my conscious memory. >.>

I just got to 40 today and was able to do this quest. I had some issues with the fight or thought I might which led me to see if there were hints or tips online about it.

I was able to win on my 3rd try. On my first try we had killed the boss... but the tank died right at the end. What. Why. Then I died on the 2nd because I let the archer go off alone and he died. Which led to my dying.

I would agree. Try to sleep each mob add. Help kill them while keeping an eye on the npc's health. Tank and Archer are the most important. Definitely sleep the wyvern asap.

You will end up kiting. The tank is utter crap at keeping the guy on him and every time he transitioned in the 3 fights I had... he always targeted me. Without fail. Definitely have sleep and physik ready for use.

Guys! I did it! :D

Next apparently is the Stone Vigil, I'm quite nervous seeing as I'm higher levels now and I've only really got past the last couple dungeons by dying :/

The main difficulty in Stone Vigil is the three dragons before the last boss. Almost all of the responsibility for not wiping there seems to fall on the healer and tank so you shouldn't feel stressed.
