Dark Knight: Damage Dealer or Tank?

I heard two opinions regarding Dark Knights. Some players would love to see Dark Knights as Damage Dealers while others want them as tanks.

Looking at the history of Final Fantasy Universe, Dark Knights were mostly Damage Dealers biggest example is FFXI. Why would anyone want Dark Knights tanks? Is it because we only have 2 tanks? I personally would want it be Damage Dealers or at least have the option of tank/dps such was Death Knights in World of Warcraft. Samurais make more sense in becoming Tanks. Also, I'm very disappointed that this game doesn't have any 2-handed Swords at launch. It is the first MMO I have ever played that lacks that class during launch. I really hope they will be implemented soon.

I'm interested in hearing the forums perspective regarding Dark Knights and have two questions:

1. Would you rather have Dark Knights as DPS or Tank and why?
2. What do you think SquarEnix's final decision be and why?

Also, it will be great if a Rep can shed some light into what they have plans with Dark Knights regarding its role

I don't know what but what I really want is a class/job which uses (standard or two-handed) swords for dealing damage.
I am all for Dark Knight as DD.

Damage. Damage. DAMAGE. PLEASE......DAMAGE. Why? Because thats what a DARK KNIGHT is. LOL. ^^

I don't mind Tanks with 2-h Swords, but I believe that 2-h Swords should be given priority to Damage Dealers. Dark Knights seem like the best option.

I remember somewhere in the old Lobestone they posted a vote on most demanded future new classes/jobs for 2.0 and among them they had Dark knight catorgorized as a Damage Dealer that uses Condition Damage to perform High Damage.

I would like to see a DD that does more damage if FACING the enemy. With the whole "flank" thing, the tank just makes the target face the other way. This way you get your bonus damage AND don't have to worry about dodging AoEs (at 0 expense of the Tank). With a DD that does increased damage if facing, much more risk and reward. The Dark Knight could have like "death stare" or something, IDK.

I would like a Shadow Knight like EQ's style, paladin with necrotic abilities. So in short.. Tank

Maiya, I would also prefer to have SAM as DD rather than tank and have another job such as Runefencer to be a Tank. What I meant to say in my above post is that Dark Knights seem to have a more DD vibe than Samurais.

Dark Knights should be a tank that comes from the Lancer class. Or a DD that comes from PLD.

Well when you think Dark knight 3 things pop up in most people mind.

1 Drains its own HP to boost attack power
2 Has a nice 2hand weapon
3 Its the polar opposite of PLD

That and to be fair if it was a tank odds are it will have the same debuffs as what we all ready have like Mara -10% damage GLD Blind effect and SMN Virus.

I all so hope that DK will have a Scythe and or GS.

Just my opinion, but the dark knight using blood magic and darkness, its gameplay should focus arond a big hp pool or high capacity of hp regen. Depending on how this is equilibrated, this could both lead to a tank or a dps. (The facing idea would be take big hits but absorb much faster. Sadly, the Wars are already here to serve as damage sponges)

On a side note, a 2 handed sword can be confusing, as it could be a katana (samurai) or a claymore (which fits the DK pretty much imho)
Also, don't say SAM is a tank... I heard some wishes that but seriously, tanks should remain what they are. True, a SAM stands in the battlefield, diing the sword drawn and still standing, but they don't fit a tank's role. No meat, no shiny shield, no hp leech..

Healer.

Because it makes no sense which seems fitting at this point. >_>

You know what, while they are at it, let's give it a bat that acts as its pet as well that you summon with MP. =P XD B/c again, that would make TOTAL sense at this point as well LOL

I really like the idea of using HP to deal damage, but that means it's gotta have the highest Vitality buffs in the game so as not to enrage Healers...

A tanky Damage Dealer is something I would use as my second class. x3

I would like Dark Knight and any other job they add later to fit with the pre existing lore for Final Fantasy. So I would like Dark Knight to stay as strictly damage, while using great swords.

Why not both

You know first lore was Cecil who used sword and shield was a tank and could wreck face with dmg

as far as I remember, the DK cecil just had a sword, and the shield came when he became a paladin during the story

Actually, first lore was FF2, where Leon was equipped with both a sword and an axe. But Cecil's still the most iconic face for the Job.

The opposite. Dark Knight Cecil always wielded both a sword and shield, and you couldn't obtain two-handed weapons(specifically the Avenger Sword, which also turned you berserk) until after you became a Paladin.

Damage Dealer. An hp spending monstrosity with cooldowns to leech life back to keep things rolling. It could work pretty well. Make it like a MNK, where they have a 3 or 4 hit combo and a selection of abilities to use for each hit. Let them weave their own combos with varying hp costs depending on the order of skills they choose. It could be pretty complex and fun.

A high hp, life draining tank already exists. Another one would be redundant.

If its built off a new class tank. If its built off of Marauder or Gladiator DPS. No class needs two of the same role

It's normally not a very good idea for a tank class be draining it's hp to do damage and that is the signature trait of final fantasy's dark knight. So DD is the only one that makes sense.

Like I said it was in the Old Lodestone.

The Old Lobstone was shut down and with it all the old Lodestone posts were deleted with it.

The only real questions I have are


How much longer can we make the duty finder ques with two more dps classes and load it down with(musketeer and if you guys get Dark Knight as a dd)

And will we have new tanks? And healers? I would be let down if they just made two new dps classes. So i vote dark Knight as a tank that uses leeching magic to recover.

First to be able to use specific Dark Knight abilities, maybe; but the first Dark Knight in the series is Leon from FF2 who was trained in most available weapon types in the game by default.


Not sure what role Dark Knights had in FF11, but seeing as its most distinguishable feature in the main series is using Souleater/Darkside/Darkness for heavy damage, I'd have to go with DPS.

I suppose you are correct. Even if I wouldn't consider people to have jobs in it. :) Regardless I would still like DRK to be a melee DPS with greatswords.

common misconception. people who don't like to tank won't magically start tanking just because there is a third tanking job.
same as with healing. while some people may prefer dot healing or pet healing or group healing or single target healing, if there's only one healing class there won't be a lot less healers than there would be if there were 2 or 3. people currently healing or tanking won't switch to dps just because there's going to be a new dps class.

(rules are made by their exceptions)

I've never really cared for Dark Knights being the greatsword wielders, personally. The only games to actually feature that in FF's history were Final Fantasy XI, and X-2. Haven't played XI, but...need I say more? :-p

It works better for Dark Knights to be the antithesis of Paladins, so setting them up as a DPS Gladiator feels a lot more...right, IMO. Hell, I was half wondering if Aldis would turn out to be a Dark Knight mentor in later patches. Have you seen his sword?

Dark Knights are usually Sword and Board users. FF11 was the exception. That and the duality of Dark Knight and Paladin leads me to believe it will be the Gladiator's DPS Job.

If they could easily swap between Dps for progression and Tank/heal for daily grind we might see a bit more(thus why I support separating Summoner/scholar stats)
