Seriously the colours are ugly, luminous, hurt my eyes, and the choice of colours are all really ugly. the look, the feel, and textures of the actual glass chat box is too modern looking, It doesnt fit in with the game at all. I think seeming as every one wants that "Final Fantasy" feel of the game back, they should make the chat window more like the FF11 one, or just make it look more like a JP RPG chat log, it was beautiful, we could choose different themes, the font and colours were perfect, it complimented the menu bar and I enjoyed reading all my LS chat and party chat. Now I just cant stand the chat window, it just doesnt feel like final fantasy when im reading my LS chat.

Trying not to be negative here, but that one in that screen shot looks bloody ugly. But i do agree with you the chat window in 14 isn't the best but then that just fits in with the whole game.

what 11's was making the chat bar the center of attention, where as 14 is more like every other MMO. I personally hate it, and the fact that we cant change simple things like font sizes bothers me. Ive tryed making my chat bar like FFXI, but of course the stamina, enemy HP and combat bar get in the way (and not being able to adjust much of the text/bg color dont help)

you guys really liked that the chat bar took up the entire bottom of the screen?
if i had the money and the tech means id put all of that stuff onto a completely seperate moniter and literally only have my groups HP and enimies HP up at the top and top left corner of my main moniter. typing chat doesnt belong in endgame so it wouldnt be needed for me and everything else just takes up valuable visual space.
i HATED that my groups HP was at the bottom right, i HATED that the chat took up THE ENTIRE bottom screen, and i hated the background colors (except transparent grey)
i thought FFXI had the ugliest and clunkiest UI in history and the worlds developers (from what i read) agreed with me when FFXI hit america. -

XI's UI was wonderful for a keyboard only or game pad.
But it was the worst thing on the planet for a mouse... it simply sucked for it... completely menu driven PS2 UI with almost no Mouse support at all.
Honestly what I loved most about FFXI was the lack of UI clutter on the screen and the usability and functionality of the chatbox. Everything could be controlled with a few key clicks. and the screen was for the most part left clear. -

One small thing quick. Why isn't there a screen lock function yet? That locks ALL of our widgets to the screen. The way things are set up, and related to the chat window as well, is if I lag and move something around or make it too big it's really obnoxious in the middle of the fight to be unable to let it go. There's also the status bar in the very top, default position leaves it right in the way and without it locked....Augh. I hate it! And it can't get smaller.
The way I have it set up is to the far left of my screen in two windows, carefully filtered.
As for the chat I couldn't agree more. While I like how clear it is so we can see behind it, it's also annoying how it gets in the way in the first place.
Now, I like it the way it is, but if they could just let us mess with the colours and the font sizes as well, that'd be ideal. -

I personally like the chat window. With the exception of not having different backgrounds/skins to choose from, I think it's a big step up from FFXI and has the potential for more options. I like that I can get it to scroll with my mouse wheel. If they would implement the ability to create custom tabs, I would be a happy camper.
If you want it to cover the bottom of your screen like it did in FFXI, nothing is stopping you. You can easily drag and drop the border of the window to resize it and move it wherever you want. Pretty much all UI elements are movable. -

when the addon's come im going, square got used to making crappy games after ffxi. FFX, FFXII, FFXIII were short no world map, and simple point to point. the past 6 years almost every dev been on the casual band wagon and lost there touch and do nothing but heavly copy each otherQuote:

Viion has a point. It's a chat log. It does what a chat log has to do and so it has to. Even the Command Prompt in Windows is ugly compared to the system itself, but I don't scream for how bad it is.
I can't simply imagine a chat log that gives an antique feeling, just because back then if there were chat logs, there were papers and sh*t, and having a piece of paper on my screen is a No Thanks. -

Sorry but, of all the things FFXI did well (I'd love to see campaign and abyssea's poppable NM systems [although not as easy to acquire gear] show up), the UI is not one of them. It's archaic and horrible to look at, even when you change the window style to be practically transparent.
I'd say ALL the things FFXIV badly, the HUD is not a real problem (let me emphasise that I mean the display outside of menus, NOT the horrid menu-maze we have for performing just about any task right now). It's relatively clean and clear, and you can move it around a lot. There's room for improvement, but I wouldn't say it matters right now.
But for the love of god, don't make it look like FFXI's. -

I liked XI's ui, but i did use a custom ui to make the chat box longer and thinner. and make it a grey translucent color, and i hate smaller text also.

I don't understand why they didn't pick one style and make all the menus with that look?
Now it looks like there's crap from 15 different games copy pasted all over my screen.
For what it's worth I like the blue boxes with white text.But that's just one of the 30 different graphic design styles in this mess.
XI managed to stick to one look like most pre FF titles. -
