I can't turn anything up using the search tool; my search-fu may be weak. But.
Can the separate races have children together? Or are they species, rather than races, and can engage in sex play but cannot have children?

As much as it pains me to admit that I clicked on this thread by replying, the aesthetician appears to be half Elezen and half Midlander. His body and face are that of a Midlander, but he has pointy ears (hmm, I suppose he could be half Lalafell instead of Elezen...).
If it goes by the rules of FFXI any bit in according to races, there were some Half Elvaan there as well. So it seems definately possible.

Whether of not they can crossbreed, I'd like to see some legitimate inter-racial (inter-special?) romance...
Currently, the only cross-race stuff I've encountered is guys looking for hookers and the like. :-/
SE said they want to release new race and i think also crossbreed would come first but who knows with yoshi-p he change his mind a lot lol.
Cross breeds were a potential option on the old poll for new races so Maybe?
At the very least, cross-breeds are rare. This means one of several things.
1: They cannot cross-breed.
2: Society frowns on it.
3: Cross-breeds are infertile and thus can't propogate (Or any other numerous biological possibilities that keeps their numbers down)
miqo'te + goblin = http://hollywoodhatesme.files.wordpr.../02/mogwai.jpg
**Spoiler alert**
In one of the story mission, Minfinia didn't say she was the dauther of a Miqote? She dont have a tail.
I for one would hope Roe-Lala breeds are impossible or at least ill advised :/ Even though, you can theorically breed a tiny dog with a big one so...
As a biologist, I really dislike SE using "race" to describe the well, species.
*INC SCIENCE*
In the game, the races should be called "Species", cause that's what they are. Races are within species. Species cannot cross breed. Birds can't have babies with humans. Humans can't have babies with sharks. HOWEVER, difference races (or breeds) can mate and have children. We see this in dogs. 2 different breeds of dogs mate to create a mixed dog.
"Races" was prolly used cause it sounds better than "species". The clans are more like races. 2 clans can mate and create hybrid offspring. F'lammin is one NPC who has a Seeker parent and a Keeper parent. She has a Seeker name, but Keeper features (dilated eyes, fangs, etc).
*END OF SCIENCE!*
In before "OMG IT'S A FANTASY"
Are you legit asking this question? Oh my god I need to find a new game.
I really don't see what's so "silly" about discussing the compatibility of different races. Topics such as whether the 5 races are in fact similar races, or entirely different species (And if the latter, that also opens up questions about how else they can differ. Medicine would likely be a nightmare), or inter-racial tensions (Sure, the races might play nice on the surface, but you're likely to get disowned by your family if you date that miqo'te that caught your eye) can be interesting and informative.
Not everyone giggles like schoolchildren when the topic of sex is brought up :P
Nnngh, I swear to the TWELVE that i've seen this before but
I clearly remember Ferne mentioning that cross breeds are possible, however, it does not generates a physical mix, the child is born of one of the two races rather than a mix of both.
I remember it being back in the 1.0 forums but i'm having no luck finding that
Also I expect it to be highly frowned upon with some of the races. Specifically Mi'qote and Elezen I expect to have social issues with cross breeding.

Yes, please! Can I have it!
1.0 players will remember that Minfilia was know as Asila as a child in the Original Ul'Dah story. Fl'hamine was her adoptive mother after her Al'hamigan father Warburton was killed.
Fl'hamine appears again in the post 2.1 story line and adds detail to this.
(This is merely a clarification of 1.0 to 2.0 plot hole that new players may not be aware of as it is not stated in clear or numerous detail.)
I do remember that in the chat boxes that pop up over the various npc's in the world signifying speech there is a elezen and a miqo'te couple shopping in the merchant shop there, and from the conversation they are very married
Yeah, there are a lot of (female) Miqo'te with what we would consider... questionable habits, regarding this sort of thing. Well, some of us old-fashioned folk, anyway. The dancers and courtesans are always Miqo'te. They're also always Seekers of the Sun, those dirty whores.
In all seriousness, while I am not asking for this to be FFXI-II, it's a bit saddening to see that compared to the Mithra, the Miqo'te have little to garner respect for. The Mithra, while having the most asinine legal system ever (Sin Hunters), were a far cry from strippers and entertainers. I guess it just feels like they're treating the scantily-clad catgirls as scantily-clad catgirls.
"But Silva, that just makes sense!"
Yes, it does. Sue me for liking to be pleasantly surprised. I'm aware that there are honorable representations of Miqo'te, Yshtola being the most prominent. She's beautiful, intelligent, daring, etc. Perhaps I'm just focusing too much on the negatives.
I could go on, but I don't think we need a dissertation on a fictional race of catpeople within a videogame. Point is, sometimes guys just need someone to fulfill a certain need. In Eorzea, I'm pretty sure most of those people happen to be Miqo'te. There are probably a lot of children running around sired from Miqo'te of questionable morals/means/whatever, unless Eorzea has some form of birth control I'm not aware of, or perhaps Miqo'te simply can't breed outside their race... that'd make them the perfect prostitutes.
Mayhap, Silva, you are expecting every Miqo'te to behave the same.
Yet you will notice a great difference between those of Ul'dah, wherein one has to do whatever it takes to garner money, those of Limsa, wherein respect is gained from the blood in your axe, and those of Gridania, wherein piety and reverence are the law.
Miqo'te fit the 'catgirl' theme according to how it would be in each different city-state, you will find the dancers to basically be ul'dahn (with the exception of the ones in Costa, but, Costa).
(note the moonkeepers are mostly from gridania)
Also of note is that there is at least one very amazing romance between a miqo'te and an elezen, which is in the ALC questline.
People acting differently based on city-state is a cool inclusion, and it's a very cool attention to detail. Thing is, I just don't see any other would-be prostitutes in the game, though obviously there'd be a demand for them.
Some people just need big girls with muscles and blue skin, I'm sure. Anyway, there is definitely a lot going on that we aren't exposed to, which I'm hoping we learn more about as the game releases more and more updates. I'm excited for the future, when it comes to that.
Apologies for not having a fully thought-out post, I just never really bother because of the pesky character limit. So, I edit and make an actual post from there, haha. It's not a habit I particularly enjoy having, but I'd probably have it even if there wasn't a limit. I always go back and add things, or reword them, or change the order of topics around.

Someone say sex?
BETTAH EAT SUM OYSTERS.
'Races' is used over 'species' because it is easiest term to use plus the fact we've been using it in RPG's for 50 years so its just the word we first turn to. Also I hate to go there, as I also think species is the correct term, but its fantasy. 'Species' is more geared towards the sci-fi genre.
Finally we actually have little to no lore of the origins of the species/races outside of the fact that "Every but elezen migrated to Eorzea", unless I missed something and if I did LINKS PLX I'd love to read it, so how are we to determine if all species/races were birthed from the same mold by a god, or if evolution took hold and Miqo'te are the offspring of some protohumanoid coeurl. For all we know Roegadyn could be amphibians and have just evolved hair and other mammalian traits to attract mates, or confuse predators.
*ahem*
Because you don't know where to look. In the golden bazaar there are some Hyur and Elezen girls- Although it's based on text NPCs say when you run by, you certainly did not notice (although there is this one FATE)
Dancer alone, a Roegadyn is part of the dance crew in Costa del Sol, seen during the MSQ there when you need to fetch the missing dancers.
Hell, the current chief of the miner's guild (who's a Highlander) once too spent her time on the dance floor of the the very guild she now leads.
Don't take this wrong, some of those details are easy to miss, specifically since catgirls are just easier to see in those roles, period. I just figured you'd enjoy some more knowledge :D
Also Thancred is shameless, btw.
Not quite sex but there was one npc (hyur?), I can't remember where from, who had a text bubble about being in love with a lalafell.
In Limsa around the big central tower there's a couple of women (its been a while since I seen them but I'm pretty sure only one of them was miqo'te) who are prostitutes who were robbing a roegadyn XD poor guy. Then again they may have just been pirates who pretended to be prostitutes to rob the guy. But if you wander around Limsa there are prostitutes scattered through out. Like one guy confessing his love to a girl and her saying all my clients say that.
Funny. I just got to the part in the story where an imperial guard mentions something about falling in love with a lalafel female...
I cant remember, but now I'm kinda hoping the npc wasn't a Roeg. I imagine the process of having a Roeg-Lala lovechild to be... uncomfortable.
