FFXI = Strategic battles, each job has a specific task to do, no jobs -just- spam attack. Lots going on at the same time. Complex system
FFXIV = spam attack + cure. Boring and repetitive.
Hopefully this will all be fixed in the next patch
I agree with this when comparing oldschool FF11 to current FF14.
These days though, FF11 is continually blurring the lines. Abyssea made it a engage & spam cure game as well. "Melee don't engage, you'll feed it TP too fast" (only a few people on the monster while everyone sits back & watches). Despite this, FF11 is still more fun & strategic, IMO.
I'm just severely burnt on FF11 & don't like the current direction it's been going.
+ The battle music in the FFXI video is masterfully composed and immensely more appropriate than the music in FFXIV
+ The graphics are much more advanced and beautiful in XIV
+ Despite the impressive graphics engine and game resolution, the abilities and spells look underwhelming in XIV, even in comparison to a nearly 10 year old game
As for gameplay?
+ In XI, your actions immediately register with the servers
+ In XIV lag can sometimes push up to 2-3 seconds before an action is executed
+ While slow paced, the battle system in XI is accurate and precise.
+ While faster paced, the battle system is not every accurate, requires little skill, and lacks the need for absolute timing and precision in XIV
+ Enmity management in XI is perfectly balanced with each ability
+ Enmity for mages is ass backwards in XIV. Casting protect will gain instant mass hate and murder you, while mindlessly spamming AoE cure's draws very little hate

The FFXI party system you showed doesn't really happen ingame anymore, I'm assuming you don't realise how much FFXI has changed over the last couple of years.
This is the 75+ leveling system and under that it's pretty much a solo leve system now.

in XIV you run around, in XI you're stationed.
in XIV you have a Battle regiment that you're stuck in until the "queue" goes off. XI is skillfully timed using the Skill Chain system and cooperation.
in XIV the latency sucks so bad that Ixali is surfing around.
in XIV the mages can attack and not do stupid damage, can even do more than DD's sometimes.
in XIV the mages are useless other than the above or aoe Curing, some dont even attack.
in XIV there is no need to worry about curing, in XI one curaga and you'd be eating the dust, in XIV you can spam it like there is no tomorrow and the monster will have no clue.
in XIV you have that GOD DAMN ANNOYING CONFIRM SOUND ON ATTACK O M G thankfully being removed.
in XIV (in that video) an Taru is out tanking a Taru, would not happen in XI (joking ofc)
in XI (in that video) the sound is INSANELY HIGH omg this guy filmed it BLASTING OUT
in XI you pull and are stationed
in XI you have defined roles
in XI Range / position matters.
in XI you can Chain EXP.
in XI a Healing class can do more than Cure.
in XI you have party buffing (not inc pro/shell)
And everyone quit because of it, just like everyone's quitting XIV, so what is your points? XD
Also in XI you have a choice, I restarted recently and levelling the old way is easy to do due to level sync and with double EXP its mega fast. 720exp gobs ftw! And I get invites out my ass, I stopped for couple week due to exams, logged in other day and bam instant invite lol no flag.
Who cares anyway, you get naked hume chicks in chests in Abyssea so its FTW
I'm well aware of how the game has changed and so posting a video of current XI would do no good to this comparison.
Remember, this is about these videos in particular. I think they accurately represent what most people remember in XIs group play and typical group play in XIV.
So far only RedAffinity has managed to properly respond. I would like more comparisons like this :)

Not saying tactics and strategic play doesn't exist in FFXIV, its just spamming is just as efficient and outcome is the same either way.

One has 70+ likes and the other 0? one has over a 100K views and the other 100? I think that says it all. And with the other couple vids that surfaced I would add that FFXI had awesome zones and good music.

Can't really tell. Obviously people who are posting in this thread have played FFXI before. But for someone like me who has only played XIV, the only difference I can see is that XIV has an action bar and XI has a more traditional battle menu.
Leveling in FFXI ever since ToAU came out has been 1 massive zerg, ffxi lost its strategy outside Boss fights along time ago. Abysea is no different then any other level camp in the game.
The difference between XI and XIV currently is the job setup and boss fights.
In XI Jobs are completely specialized for partys, XIV you build the jobs so everything is more versatile but less specialized.
With the boss fights in ffxi, 1 person screws up and it causes a massive wipe for the whole group... on a mob that you only had the chance to kill once every 3 days in some occasions. Or 1 wipe costing you around 2-5 weeks of work.
FFXI demanded you know the fight, your job, and perform at an extremely high level or alot of endgame was simply hellish.
Like einherjar where you need 9 feathers to fight odin, you can get a max of 2 a week if you do not fail. You enter odin it uses all the feather (there was ways to do it every 2 week, but still 2 weeks), you have 30mins to kill him, you time out you get kicked from the fight with no feathers left. OR tiamat which was heavily camped, you claim that and wipe another ls would take it... thing spawns once every 3ish RL days.
FFXIV it simply does not matter. IF you wipe so what, no sp loss. If you lose a claim who cares it spawns again in 5mins. If the tank dies why care... Mar or THM tank it while the 3 (not 5) min weakness wears off. That and the only mob in the game with remote difficulty would be buffalo, and even that is a joke compared to NMS in FFXI when 1 wrong tp move would wipe the whole allaince.
All this is Pre-Abysea.... FFXI is more of a joke then XIV is in terms of difficulty now.
COR is awesome but ridiculously expensive to level. Also FFXI golden years were basically pre-ToAU, but the game was still great before abyssea. Such a dumb direction to steer a game. It's like they don't even care.
I've always thought that Abyssea was SE giving away the FFXI farm to keep players from completely leaving the game for FFXIV. They were hoping to get income from both games at once for a short period at the cost of FFXI's long term future.
If they had known what a disaster the FFXIV release would have been, it would have been postponed for a year or more and FFXI would likely have a Far East expansion today.
It's really too bad.
I really didn't notice much of a difference. Just 2 bland and dull combat systems.
FFXI is an old game that had a lot of time to be polished, FFXIV is a new game, released before time with plenty of issues to be fixed so its too early to pass any judgement, and comparing them at this point in time is unfair.
Not to mention the two games are different enough that in the end its like comparing apples to oranges.
