It's in the Terms of Service. You acknowledge the fact that the game may be unplayable at any given time, including maintenance. Technically, they reserve the right to disallow anyone from playing at any given time, for whatever reason they so choose.
EDIT: Congratulations, OP! You've been graced with my 100th post! *throws a party*
While everyone knows the ToS says that, it'd be a nice thing for them to do for their paying customers that aren't able to play at all on monday (most likely). It's one of those small things that make people feel their support of the game is appreciated.
1 free day? and we pay $15 a month... so divide.. and then math... so you want compensation for 50 cents? Really? LIKE REALLY?
compensation for 50 cents hahahaahahahahaha oman
It's only a day. I see thread after countless thread about how players only play one day a week, and now that they need a day for the patch, it's an outrageous scam and we should be compensated! LMAO!

I hope the servers are down till wednesday so all the people saying it's ridiculous come back crying that it being down over 24hours is ridiculous. XD
No. I'm also fairly sure there's something in the ToS specifically about subs and maintenance. A quick skim through, maybe?
Sounds like someone doesnt read the ToS...xD
Really tho- It's just one day. Can you really not find something to do for 16+ hours (because I would hope you would sleep the other 8 hours) while waiting for the dev team to add-what? 3-4Gbs of additional content? Really OP?
Also, congrats to WolfAndre on the 100th post :3
Some games do this. WoW does it a lot. I'd frequently find lots of bonus playtime to compensate for maintenances, ironically at times I wasn't even playing anyway. It would be nice if SE did this, but I wouldn't my breath for that kind of service from SE.
Not going to happen, ever.
SE could do maintenance for 7 days and they wouldn't give you a refund or free play time. If anything they'd mail everyone a new minion and a fantasia potion.
I think I see a good way to get some money here, if I can get every ffxiv sub to send me 50 cents I may be able to make $250k. :D
No need.
I get FFXI free for 13 days.

@ OP I think this 24 hours away from the game is just the thing you need, now back away from the keyboard and go outside and see the real world because the 50 cents you're crying about is nothing when looking at what we're gaining in this patch.
You're getting a FREE content upgrade and all it requires is roughly a day away from the game.. jebus.. pack of greedy vultures.
It's cute how everyone on this forum thinks that a Terms of Service agreement actually holds any sort of legal weight. You cannot side-step legal boundaries just by including things like that in your ToS, and it's pretty much universally accepted by courts that nobody actually reads terms of service agreements. I'm not saying I think we should be compensated for this, that's completely ridiculous - but people on this forum put way too much stock in ToS'. They aren't a legal force-field. Blizzard was forced to compensate and recall Diablo 3 in several countries due to the fact that the box did not make it clear about online requirements and down-times, despite the fact that it made it very clear in the ToS.

I want my .4 Dlls I lost today because maintenance!!.
Woud be nice of them? Yes.
They have to do it? No.
.....really.....
Anyway, it's set to 24 hours as max time.
They said they will try and do it in a shorter period of time.
One extra free day means an extra day waiting before I get my Behemoth mount.
I say nay!
You must be one broke ass piece of work if you want compensation for 50 cents.
Go do something productive with your time. lol
No but wait the day they alwasy come online and play is Monday after reset!!! What will they do today...you know those...MONDAY PLAYERS!!!!
The shame...the agony!!!!!
Can you imagine their confusion when they attempt to log on and the screen in the launcher is simply...BLANK!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
But they did actually give us was it 2 weeks of free time because the servers made it hard to access the game? SE is one of those few video game companies that still has what is called goodwill. So I would not see it as an impossibility, but for 1 day it is unlikely.
Most people already are getting a free day. If you normally have in game commitments on a Monday, you are now free to do whatever you want with the day instead!
buh.. but.. its monday.. monday is coil day
#sheldon
They gave us all fair notice it would be a 24 hour maintenance. That's a whole day.:P
*wakes up the day after party...looks over and finds OP still sleeping...checks phone...*
Duuuuuuude....what happened last night...?
I didn't say it was legal. I just said (well, in so many words) that SE ain't gonna do sh*t for self-entitled plebeians as long as they don't have to. THAT'S what a Terms of Service is. They can say F U for as long as they like, if they like, and they are under no obligations to give any f*cks.
Maintenance is something that they are not giving refunds for, nor will a single day of interrupted service hold any sort of water in a court of law, especially when that company states, explicitly, that you're PAYING for maintenance. Oh no, you missed a day. Go milk a cow or hug your children.

At the risk of sounding like too much of a jerk, you DO bring up valid points. You were just aiming them in the wrong direction. Hat tip to you, sir.
Game companies compensate for major unplanned downtime. Like in the case of this very game where we got roughly a free extra week due to the poor server performance and constant downtime early on.
This particular maintenance is something that was planned for and announced quite some time ago so it should come as no surprise that the servers would be down for roughly a full day. There's no reason whatsoever to "compensate" that.
I also can't remember the last time Blizzard did any kind of real compensating for regular downtime, largely because I can't remember the last time they even had major downtime outside of normal weekly maintenance and patch days. Now they'll frequently credit trial and inactive accounts with a few days of free time so you can see the new content and maybe resub, but they largely don't just pass out free days to everyone even if their servers are experiencing major problems.
Is this thread for real? People will literally complain about anything.
I'm sitting here reading through this thread and I think to myself... All you dragoons in Tron Dragoon Armor look the same.
