The SteamOS is releasing tomorrow. Is anyone going to try it out?

I wonder what it has for us gamers? I currently have Windows 8.1 installed, and I don't want to wipe what I currently have just to try this out. However, I am probably going to wait a good while to see how this new OS goes. I wonder how FFXIV: ARR would run on it?Quote:
The first release of SteamOS will be available to download from tomorrow, December 13, Valve has announced.
However, the developer doesn't recommend that users try it out until next year unless they're already "an intrepid Linux hacker". The operating system will be available to download for free to individual users and via commercial OEMs.
SteamOS is a new operating system based on Linux that has been specifically designed for gaming.
Valve says that the operating system "combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen" and claims that it will let "the hardware industry... iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they've been able to" before.

I'm going to pass. I do hope it becomes popular so more games are released for it.
Something to keep in mind is that it's Linux based so any hope to make FFXIV work you would need to use Wine. I don't know the status of the Wine project is, if it's working or not.
If you are going to try this I suggest installing it on a separate computer or if you know what you are doing create dual boot setup on another partition. -

I'm probably going to skip on it to begin with as I've never done Linux before. Do you think it will have a lot more graphical options than what Windows offers us?

it's how I use Ubuntu. Personally I have yet to see anything from any Linux distro that is any danger to Microsoft. AMD and Nvidia making new
API's are more concerning for MS then Linux has ever been. It's not that I don't like linux, I'm a supporter. Until somebody makes a Linux distro that

But to answer the question. I haven't heard of the OS till this thread. I may check it out, if I have the time. which with 2.1 on the way and I have
two weeks off from work coming up. I doubt I'll do anything with it. -

I have high hopes for it, but my knowledge of Linux is user-level at best. I might fire up an instance of it in a VM just to see what it looks like, though.
Everything hashes on whether or not Valve can get NVidia and AMD to give it good driver support. -

I have not tried it myself so I'm not confident people who try it will not have any issues getting it to work. I have heard of players banned in other MMOs for using wine because their tool flagged it. If you're going to try it and run into problems the ownership is on you.Quote:

SteamOS is not a typical Linux Distro. It's built to be like a Console, not a PC OS, (AKA Kiosk for those of you in IT) so it's not going to allow you to install anything beyond Steam APPS that were developed/migrated for Linux.
This includes EVERYTHING Valve has ever released, since they re engineered their games. This is amazing, since they have done testing and found SteamOS to provide 30% better performance on the same exact PC running SteamOS instead of Windows.
However most other titles will still be Windows only. Sadly, since FF14 is only built for Windows, it will be unavailable on SteamOS.
This also stops you from installing any other Packages to your SteamOS, such as WINE.
Now for the serious bad news: Review sites that have had a chance to interview Valve have also criticized the lack of Steam OS allowing the PC to be anything more than a Game Console, which includes Social Media, and Multimedia Playback capabilities. Both of these are non existent on the current platform of SteamOS. This severely limits usage on terms for Streaming game play, or Sharing information.
Will this be fixed in the future? Time will tell, but IMO this limits Steam OS to being a Niche Beta for some time before it hits to be the Main Stream PC Gamer Console replacement for Windows. -

this is for two reasons. they want a better everything over what a console can give, and they want the PC for more then just games.
steam can't do both of these things so it's fail out of the box.
Even if they open the kernel up to more than just the game playing aspect, it's never going to be more then just the internet. I don't care
how many people have tried, there has never been a replacement for MS Office. There is a reason Apple has never tried to replace MS in this
aspect. When all is said and done, Steam is in competition with the consoles and not MS and Apple. I myself never built my PC's for just gaming.
If I did that I may as well just by a console. -

This is not an OS that you install on your computer. It's the OS that will drive the SteamBox, which is their take on a dedicated console. It' be like trying to install the PS4 OS on your desktop, and wondering why most of your software won't work.
