WP: taking out the adds in last fight

When taking out the Tonberry adds in the final fight, which class/role should be priority? Usually I see ranged DPS doing it, but recently I've been asked to do it as healer and I'm not sure what I should be doing.

In your opinion, which role should be taking out the adds and why? And for those of you who think the healer should, what's the best practice/tips on how to do it?

If you are in a speed run, usually ppl get the Whm to holy the adds down. It speed things up alot.

In a SR do people generally still stick to the 3 - 4 adds max at a time? I'm comfortable with healing the dungeon and even DPSing up to that point, but when it hits the Tonberry King I'm not sure what's optimal for me to be doing.

If you are sp it implies everyone is over geared, allowing for whm to do that. If you are not in sp it does not apply. Thats the distinction.

For the Tonberry King you should mostly be in Cleric stance. Before you go into Cleric Stance, throw a Regen on the tank and/or Stoneskin then go into Cleric Stance.

I just pretty much do DPS then, and throw on a Stoneskin in between every 4 casts or so. When you see the text come up about how he's attacking, throw a stoneskin on the tank ASAP. It should mitigate pretty much all of it, for the first few times you won't really need to turn off cleric stance to heal, just throw a regen even with cleric stance on (since it's a pain sometimes; but you can turn it off as you want); rinse repeat and then near the end of the fight if all the Tonberry's at pushing on the Tank, use Holy. Holy them all dead.

Remember that even in Cleric Stance, the amount Stoneskin does isn't equivalent to your stats, only the tanks; which doesn't change when you use Cleric Stance. So Stoneskin is your friend, especially with the stabbity attack he does.

Usually after the holy of all the adds that smack on the Tank, the Tonberry king should soon die. If he still has a bit of HP left then I usually turn off Cleric Stance and go into heal mode so that if another stabbity attack comes around, I'm ready to save their life.

I think it's best to let the DPS take out the first bundle of Tonberry's that come around since they can do it easily and your eyes should be fixated on the tank anyway, but the DPS should stop doing it when the large group of Tonberries spawn so you can holy them; one cast of the Holy and you kill like, 5 of them as opposed to the time the DPS has to wait for the GCD between each tonberry

It actually more to do with tank, if he has 5k+hp you can kill all adds all of the time and the most effective way is for whm to holy once if your int is high I think 450ish, twice if your int is around 400 ish.

There are 2 ways to do it as a WHM. Either you let the adds walk towards the middle(none will aggro anyone and start attacking til they reach the middle) and you just Holy them alltogether. Or you simply single target Aero them. Preferably in Cleric Stance. With decent gear one Aero and the DoT will kill off a tonberry.

I prefer the Holy way, cause it's one spell(2 max) and you also hit Tonberry King for some extra DPS on the boss.

I think this is the big thing. If you are in a "SR" run, you signed up for doing whatever is needed to make the run as fast as possible, which means the healer is probably handling adds. If you feel uncomfortable with this, let the group know prior to joining or queueing so they can be informed. If you join a normal WP (or what I prefer, Well Paced... a few pulls at a time, but kill most stuff and nothing too stressful) or DF, people should expect a DPS on the adds, not the healer.

Speed run or not, you can still Holy them down. The only time the tank needs focused cures is right after Everyone's Grudge. Outside of that, Regen + Medica II will probably take care of the healing throughout the fight.

It really depends on the party comp, everyone's gear, and how comfortable you are with Grudge.

As a WHM, you can do adds like others have said...but...it does depend on the tank. They need to be able to tank 5 stacks if you do the Holy method.

If you're not comfortable with that, a BRD or BLM is best for adds, since they're ranged and can take them out quickly. If you don't have either, SMN and DRG are next; SMN is ranged, but will kill adds slower, DRG is melee, but kills fast. MNK should probably just sit on the boss.

People kill the ads? My group just ignores them altogether and burns down the boss while the tank moves him in a circular pattern. Less hassle that way, although it's getting harder to do now that we are over geared for the dungeon since we only build a LB1.

WHM I play with just goes cleric stance and drops a holy, he can one shot the adds though so that helps.

Then he just drops cleric and continues healing until more tons come up.

I always holy down the tons. Having the DPS never having to leave the boss makes the boss even more of a cake walk. In the mean time I'm stone IIing and stoneskinning the tank.

I've recently started doing WP a lot (not ready for any speed runs yet), and as a DRG, I prefer to be able to just focus on the Tonberry King. If my DPS partner is a BLM, then I have no problems doing just that. But the last couple times I've run it with a Summoner as the DPS, they haven't been able to handle the adds (either that or they were killed too fast, I'm not really sure), suddenly there's chaos and then everyone's dead. After the wipe, the SMN asks if I can take the adds, so I do, running around killing little tonberries. Since I have to run to each one to kill it, it's a slow enough pace that they don't stack too fast, so the tank isn't overwhelmed for stabby time. Eventually, I ignore the little guys and focus on the king, usually throwing down the LB to kill it. Works well for me.

I still haven't done a run with a WHM who is comfortable rocking the Cleric Stance and throwing down Holys. But that's probably because the healer in my FC who does WP the most is a SCH.

Our group has the WHM holy the first couple sets then I take the last as a BLM. we keep it to 3-4 per grudge, I am sure there are faster ways to do it, but my fire 1 takes them out 99% in one shot. No idea where that 1% comes from but once in a great while there is one still after a hit. if three are close together a couple fire 2s when close to the boss also works. normally we only have 3 sets maybe the 4th sneaks in before the boss it close enough to dying to ignore them.

I Stone II + Aero the adds, it leaves them with a sliver of health and the DoT ticks and kills them before they get to me.

For the final large group of tonberries I just sleep them and focus fire on the boss.

when i war my fc just waits for them to get to the center and aoe them with king. i can take the 5 stack grudge with lil issues @ 7500hp. ill sit on a inner beast just in case so whm can holy with dps
when i brd i can kill them really fast so i just get em.. bring to center and wide volley
blm similar, scathe get, fire2

Thanks for the tips everyone! About Stoneskin before the grudge hit...I tried that in a recent dungeon run and even though I cast Stoneskin (I even tried Swifcasting it the third time) as the king starts casting, it still seems to hit for the same amount AND the Stoneskin doesn't get absorbed.

Do I need to pre-emptively cast before he starts casting? If so, I got a lot of learning to do!

If you are curing a Shield Oath'd Paladin in this fight, you can literally cast Regen, Stoneskin, Cure, then wait until Everyone's Grudge, cast Cure II, then repeat. If Paladin could cure themselves for a few hundred more HP they could self heal the entire fight and never be in any danger. It's not a matter of it being an SR strategy or not, you have 3 other party members doing something other than standing there, the least any White Mage can do during this fight is cast Holy.

Yea if you see the box 'HEAR THE SCREAMS OF BLABLABLA' youre too late but its still good to finish the stoneskin so he wont take more dmg after the hit and theres still time to follow with a preemptive cure2 because everybodysgrudge is so slow

One combo I just finished enjoying was war/sch/smn/smn. As one of the summoners, we basically just tossed 3 shadow flares around the king, and let the adds just come to the middle. The adds practically melted down, letting the rest of our dps go solely onto the king. He went down in no time. I think he maaaaybe got 2 grudges off?

for me as Drg :
1-if the other Dps : is melee ( Drg or mnk ) the best gear should focus on boss while other kill adds.
2-if the other DPS is Range definitely is he/her will take it
3-if the other DPS is Mage ( smn,blm ) he will take it

I love kill adds without worry about Grudge, While healer focus on Tank

1 Cleric Stance Holy kills all the adds. I always do it on WHM.

Everyone's Grudge
Cure tank
Regen
Stoneskin
DPS King
Adds come
Repeat

Pretty easy to do as WHM.

Even as brd, I just let them gather in center and aoe them down if WHM does not want to. Nowadays I usually see the whms taking care of adds via holy or aero.
