If achievements are implemented, will there be a way to opt out of participating in the meta game?
Achievements are already implemented, what do you mean by opt out though? Like not receive achievements?
You will receive them wether you want to or not, but much like other Achievment systems you can probably not care about them like everyone else.
Yes, if someone wants to go along with the achievement system then they have the option. If someone else doesn't want to be apart of that system, they have an option to not be involved.
I'm burnt out on the achievement things in games personally, especially the e-peen aspect of it. More so since the e-peen brings out the griefers over things.
Then why don't you just ignore it? Achievements have been in since day 1 but im assuming from your OP you didn't know, that is how discreet they are right now and will continue to be. I don't think they will ever put in an option to turn off achievements.
I definitely get what you're saying and I do ignore it. It's more about the moments when achievements are used as some right of passage or weapon on people's skill. For some people, achievements have become a competition. Some of us aren't here to compete, just to kill time or have fun. I don't see the FFXIV acting the same way as the Xbox Live crowd, but XBL has made me resent achievements.
I'm also a big fan of privacy.
I already wasn't too big on achievements, but remember the moment when I thought to myself "Alright this is getting ridiculous". Playing Fable 2 on the 360 and seeing achievements like 'String together a full-speed chain attack, or see another Hero do so.'
You want to watch me do something you can't do for an achievement? Then it's not a damn achievement!
Well considering this is a public game and you dont own any of your characters data SE decide your privacy. I dont get what you mean by the achievements used as weapons, they never have been, no one has every gone around bragging "im so pro, you guys sux, i've defeated 50k mobs!" lol. The only achievements you have atm is what NM's you defeat, factions, quests, guildskills and various "leves complete" "mobs defeated" etc. And also special holiday events just got added recently.
The achievements are so bland, discreet and worthless that it won't even be like the xbox scene. You just have to ignore achievements if you're not into them, people barely talk about them now.
Not to mention as titled it is known as "History" not really Achievements because it lists everything you complete, there's a lot of people with over 500 (achievements) events in their history because they buy a lot of guild skills, go visits all the camps and complete all the quests. All things not really noteworthy of what an xbox live achievement might be.
Achievements are the videogame variants of the bard song. When you do something great, the system sings your praises. In any fantasy setting, when your achievements are completed, they are sung out.
Actually sounds more realistic to have them, than not to have them.
This is a little off topic but, would you be in favor of getting achievements for High Quality +3 R47+ Tools, Weapons, and Gear? I also didn't want to start a new thread for this simple question ^^.
Forgot to add all the R37 off hand tools excluding Carpenter, Chef and Weaver, since they have r47 off hand tools.
What ppl mean is What happen in WoW inorder to join in on the content you must have the "gearscore" and the "achivement" Actuslly joining an event to get said achievment is hard.
This happened in FFXI as well with having all +1 gear and /NIN sub with Utsusemi: Ni and whatever else have you. People being elitists is not something that was introduced with Gearscore or Achievements, it was always there and will continue to be there in any system.
To be honest, I didn't know we already had an achievement-type system until I read this thread. I like it how it is - unobtrusive and completely optional. Something easy to be completely oblivious to, but easy to say "oh, that's cool" if you stumble upon it.
Gearscore took it quite a bit further than XI did. XI was more on the "friendly" side because the only time you "needed" +1 or HQ gear is if it actually has stats over the NQ version, e.g:

vs it's HQ version

Then you have the people who want to be as efficient as possible and try to push it on everyone else even though that extra 1 str for 82,900,999 won't do a damn thing but yeah as said that exists in every MMO.
That is the players fault, not the system.
No, sorry, the elitism in FFXI was much, much worse. Entire classes were shut out from playing, meripo parties were full of a-hole elitists, and people DEMANDED that you have top tier expensive items the moment you were able to equip them (see: haubergeon, SH, etc.). The majority of people in the LSes I've been in had to take a solid 2-3 weeks off from leveling at the level 30 and 50 mark to grind out the money they needed to buy their sniper rings and haubergeons, or their +rest MP gear and elemental staves or whatever. And god forbid you didn't have the current flavor of the month, top notch food when you joined a party.
At least WOW's gearscore elitism didn't require people to grind money for a solid month before they'd be able to participate in anything.
Anyone that argues that XI elitism wasn't bad didn't level a DRG in 04.
Go ahead. I'll wait.
Yarly. I couldn't care less about achievements, but they don't -bother- me. As I said, I stumbled on them, said that's nifty and went on my merry way.
If we *need* to be all crazy leet, I'd MUCH rather have titles. To me, back in the day when Vrtra was a big deal, my Vrtra Vanquisher title meant a hell of a lot more to me than a random *bloop bloop* xbox popup saying I got X amount of kills or headshots or grenade sticks etc.
All in all, it boils down to some people needing to be coddled to, and some people not giving a crap.
You mean around the time DRG could no longer spam Penta Thrust due to the TP changes therefore people decided against using DRG since they're "no longer useful", a.k.a Ignorance? That's a tad bit difference than elitism. BG forums however I'll agree made XI's elitism look pretty bad.
Yes, and for the 3 fucking years that followed where DRG was virtually useless. You seem to forget the whole LOLDRG stigma... that is essentially elitism since people chose to exclude that job from events. DRG wasn't the only victim of this but its the obvious case.
Any forum dedicated to talk of end game by that particular community makes elitism look bad. Whats your point? Look at Elitist Jerks.
That said, nothing will change and trying to develop around this is just not an option. Accept it and move on.
Just because something isn't as bad as the entire community thought it was doesn't mean that elitism gets an excuse. Guess what, you didn't need the 4000+ gear score to do whatever normal mode raids WOW had either. But people were still elitists about it. That's the f'in definition of elitism.
Ok achievments
1) we already have them in game
2) we already have a way to look them up(just not in game)
so the only thing left is
3) an in gfame interface
thats what i see them doing
and as far as opting out, its called IGNORING them
asking to opt out of this is as simple as opting out of crafting in this game, just dont do it
http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...cicuid=1702489 Hey look, it's achievements. If you want to "opt out", based on the pattern of achievements, you'll want to do nothing in the game since it's just a little nod you did soandso.
The lode stone achivements history is one of the only reasons im still playing this game. I find it extremely fun to complete achivments i have not yet got and I compete with a freind of mine who also likes collecting them all. We are currently collecting all the aether gates and doing all the remaining faction leves we missed and finishing every class quest.
Personaly it gives me mini goals to complete and aim for and has kept me playing the game. And that is the keyword here this is a "Game" and its supposed to be fun its supposed to be competative. People that dont like achivement systems in games I just dont understand them and I never will. why are they playing a "Game" with other players if there not interested in the achievments there character has acomplished.
There is people who play this game with everything maxed to 50 or close and yet i look at there history page and its half the achivments that I have and I only have 1 level 50. That is sad, it shows me there just grinding stuff up for the sake of it and are not actualy "playing" the game. I love the quests in this game (except side quests lol), especialy the class quests, they motivate me to level a class to 36 to see the entire story and the achievment you get for completing it.
I look forward to whatever SE has planned for expanding the achivment system in this GAME that i PLAY for FUN.
