FFXIV: poor gameplay due to lag

I could not find a more specific tab to put this thread in since it affects gameplay in general, but mostly when doing raids/primals hm (extreme modes in the future).

Why does SE give us servers that can not provide smooth gameplay? Did they have to cut corners because they were on a budget and decided to have 'okay' servers?

Sure, you can say: "well, don't play the game gtfo". But let's face it: we want to play this game, we want to play FF. Forums are here to discuss and ask things helping out other players and developers to make the game better..

I don't need to get into all the details, everyone knows this game terribly lags. If you think it's not, it's because you only play this MMO and got used to how it feels. Just play another MMO for about 30 minutes (any other MMO really, that's the sad part, even the free to play ones), then come back to this game, you'll know what I mean..

Does anyone know the upcoming patch will try to fix these terrible lag issues?

Contact your internet service provider. I have been playing since a week after launch with shitty time warner cable and I experience almost no lag. If there was a problem fundamentally with the servers wouldn't this be a problem that EVERYONE experienced?

That's nice mate.

However, it's not like we can't play the game due to this lag, it's just there. Some people just do not notice it I guess. It's just not right when we need to take into account to move out of things differently because what we see isn't actually what is happening. Just one of many examples I could give..

I will contact my Internet service provider. I will tell them FFXIV is the only game which has this issue, maybe they can help. Thanks, I did not think of that one myself!

There is at minimum a .3second position delay that even SE has stated (and put in on purpose). Really getting tired of people coming in with this argument.

Ya I hate when people use the "I am not lagging" statement. That is like people in NY saying it is snowing and someone in Miami saying it is not, it is 90 and sunny. And BTW your Sig is the best! I am so stealing it!
Titan is the one fight I can't do due to that lag. Working on turn 5 and no issue in Coil, but Titan lag kills me all the time.

Well I guess me and the 40+ members of my FC are just insanely lucky to have god like connections because we never seem to experience this so called "lag". There is only one particular attack that EVER has hit me when I've been outside the void zone, and thats the mold circular AoE the first boss of WP uses. I routinely go weeks without getting hit by an avoidable mechanic on titan (just helping out friends and what not), yet I experience the same .3 delay we all experience, and the same animation lock we all experience, yet I don't get hit by stuff. Hmm, strange. As if some grainy shitty .gif image is concrete proof of their being lag. If you haven't adapted your playstyle to account for the slight delay, then I hate to sound like a jackass, but maybe you just aren't that good? The poster above just sounds like a bad player, I mean, how are you working on coil but can't kill titan? Titan is pretty laughable because the fight is the same thing OVER AND OVER AND OVER. If you learn the rotation, even with a half second delay, you should be able to dodge shit by moving preemptively.

It's the ignorance people tend to build when they can't come up with some decent arguments..

BTW, Titan hm is a good example of how lag sometimes makes this game impossible to enjoy.

The cool thing is that people like Lex_Luger are rarer and rarer. Some that used to post his "statement" have now become affected by the lag and "changed" sides. I love Fraeblood's analogy. Perfect.

This thread wasn't about being able to down Titan hm. The fact some people still brag about how Titan is laughable, only proves they spent a shit ton of time learning the fight. Would be quite sad for someone starting early September but still having trouble with Titan wouldn't it?

Never said I can't beat Titan, did months ago. Go in and help others kill it every week. SE has admitted to the lag issue. But since you can't read my post, I guess you don't read their posts either. I am happy you and your friends don't have the issue a lot of others do. You do know people play on different PCs and on different connections. Someone playing on top internet and a i7 will prob lag less then someone on a lower speed connection and a dual core. Comparing people on an even playing field and using blanket statements is total ignorance on your part. There are millions of variables that go into lag or DC issues. Some get 90000 a lot, others haven't had it once. Some lag on some fights, while others don't. The lack of IQ it takes to put lag issues on the player and it is their fault they might lag is laughable.

You are right, and I fail at feeding the Troll. This is the only issue other then only 4 bosses in Coil that I have with the game right now. it is rare but when it hits ya it sucks. haven't gotten hit by the knock off ability with the lag but the plumes have gotten me when I am clear on the other side of the platform.
But Titan is the only fight I get this so I can't QQ too much. Coil has been fun we cleared Turn 4 last week and Turn 5 looks to be fun, so overall the game has great content. I like that SE has addressed it and is probably working on it if they can. maybe they just need to add more data centers. Having just the one is prob why some people lag more often if they are farther from it then others.

Do some of you have "good" connection between the servers? Because it doesn't seem like "good" is good enough. I live in Hawaii so no matter what server between NA or JP I still get lag. So unless SE has a Pacific/Oceanic server which will be probably never... I'm screwed.

Some people have to resort to tunnels to get under 200 ping. 200 ping is in no way low, but it seems to be the standard for the "I can at least dodge things now"

While good for Lex_Luxor to him for no lag he also holds some truth there. SE has stated there's a .3 lag timer (which was updated before the Twintania fix due to complaints wasn't it? Not sure of the number now), but people still go on trucking like there's none to exist so it doesn't seem to be too much of an issue.

Now to what I meant regarding Lex Luxor's 'truth' is that SE can't route things on your ISP, that's your ISP's job. Some companies have just plain horrible routing that tunneling can effectively cut out a good 150 ping if it's that bad. Alternatively, it may also be congestion, not SE's fault as well.

If a tunnel makes all the worlds difference, 'tis but a sad thing we have to resort to such services to play, but once again this is an ISP issue... SE could have the best servers in the entire world and it wont mean squat if your ISP is going to kick you in the behind. That or your location is just too far from the server... I hear Europe's server is in Canada... What twit thought of that?

common misconceptions may or may not also include a finished cast bar being different from an animation and that people are paying attention to the animation not the cast bar

Yeah, this thing about EU servers not being in EU is just... (they're on a budget!)

I've played numerous of other MMO's where this wasn't the case (the lag). Let me make it clear again, it's not that my char is robotting around. There is just a little too much lag imo.

I'm aware of the ISP part, but this is not the case. Heck, even FFXI on a Japanese server played better....

Your .gif says it all xD.. On a more serious note, it spoils the fun when this happens during a more serious fight, that's my point.

Agreed. I have never blamed SE outside of knowing that they can compensate for it (ie. game time checks + spread servers out). They may not have caused the issue, but they can make sure it doesn't affect players.

I think they forgot just how big the US is, too. I am from Cali, and my ISP has to do a ton of hops just to get to the Canada server because they put them all on the East coast..

Exactly, PvP isn't even possible right now. I don't like PvP but yes I so want it to come asap so people understand it's not right to work our way around a crappy netcode or whatever the problem is with this game.

For PvE it's easy, you know what's coming, so you just calculate it a bit to not get hit, big deal.. Does not mean it takes away the fun to play the game when we need to fix things on our own when we do not read/see/feel the support from the devs.

We all got used to the delay because we want to play this game. Unfortunately there are fewer people who actually think this is not the way it should be, SE needs to fix this. The 'contact your ISP' is getting old and isn't valid. This clearly has nothing to do with ISP's when this problem is worldwide. Or did all ISP's decided to have a crappy year because FFXIV came out?

God...I'm getting tired of people like you. Players having to "pre-emptively" act to counter bad game design/bad servers does not mean that all of a sudden it doesn't exist. I adjusted my play to minimize the "danger" of that shit...doesn't mean that just cause I can avoid almost anything with 100% certainty...that it isn't a problem. You even said so yourself...you adapted your playstyle...so this is reason enough for you to claim the lag/delayed server response doesn't exist...you contradict yourself on your own...

While I'm a bit puzzled as to why my 180ms ping has resulted in delays similar to that shown in the video(~1200 ms), I've embraced it as a feature rather than a bug, something that makes the game more challenging. Those who don't experience what that video shows are playing the game on easy mode...I kinda feel bad for them. In this context, there are two kinds of mmo players. The ones who play games because they enjoy the gameplay(After all, people have played plenty of counter-strike without any kind of persistent gain except for their own accumulated experience and improved skill)...And the ones who play because they like accumulating virtual stuff and watching numbers go up over time and consider their time wasted if they lose(Have you considered IdleQuest? Great ratio of player time to character improvement!).


Not only does the lag make the game much much more challenging(=fun), but fights like Titan clutch the holy grail of MMO design...Massively Multiplayer twitch gameplay. Err...except I guess RotMG manages to do this too without any lag whatsoever...and maybe it's kinda depressing that a game with a fraction of the budget could get that right while Square can't, but..

My point is that, lag or no lag, the hours I spent trying to get my relic in Titan was the most fun I've had in an MMO in a very long time. Maybe it's a language thing...the Japanese player's don't seem as high strung(I heard(and hear) どんまいです constantly, but it's very rare to hear an anglophone player say "Don't worry/no worries" or "It's all good"). In which case it's not the lag that's making you unhappy..it's the other players.

Titan HM is not impossible, even with the lag. My best suggestions are to boost your health to the point that you can survive getting hit by a plume, make sure you aren't near other players when the plumes come(so they don't stack on you), don't be flat-footed before plumes/landslide begins, and always have sprint up before landslide appears. Except many don't pre-empt the attack. I have ~180ms and I don't run early for Weights on Titan, I dodge them when I see them. And I do it fine. Again, it doesn't change the fact our positions are polled ever 0.3 seconds instead of more often, but don't assume the people making the claim of being fine are having to pre-empt and move before the attack shows.

I wasn't refering to moving before the attack shows in specific. I personally dodge shit through forcing the client to update my position by moving out of whatever is targetting me and the moment I'm out I use a skill, whatever it may be, a buff, an attack whatever. That's how I dodge stuff.

PS: EU player here and it works just fine...still doesn't change that this is poor design.

My point was, is that "pre-emptively" means moving before it shows. I was telling you that many who don't have issues, do not have to do so. You're the one making the claim that people "not having issues" are having to move before the indicator shows, it's quite clear in your post.
