GeForce ShadowPlay! Live Video Recordings with "0" Lag!

Guys yesterday I tried the new utility that nVidia released, ShadowPlay. Essentially it enables the hardware h.264 encoder onboard of the GeForce Serie 600 and 700 video cards and does live real-time on the fly h.264 encodings of your game at a very low performance hit.

I recorded and Hydra Kill at 1080p 60 fps @ 50Mbps max quality, the video looked sweet i could swear I was playing instead of watching a video, and the best of all It introduced Zero Lag to my gameplay. The video lasted 7 minutes and weighted 2.3 GB.

Then went on to record Ifrit, Garuda and finally some Coils Turn 2 through 4. One thing I didn't expect is that it also recorded our Mumble voice chat, wich it supposedly wouldn't do, but it did, so I'm happy :cool:

I used this already to record some Batman Arkham Origins gameplay already. Worked GREAT! I was using it to record our FC's BC T1 run last night. But figured people wouldn't want to watch a bunch of wipes... Hehe!

Why do I feel people are using forums to advertise! T_T (not just here on a couple of other posts)

Well for people that like to record game sessions this a big thing. Live recording always meant reduced game performance and/or hard disk trashing, so this is a great tool that I just wanted to share with you all... I wouldn´t recommend buying a new video card just for this, but im sure for those that already have a GeForce card in their rigs this is great news. And the price is just right... (Free :p)

Ohh Wow, they must have just added FFXIV to the list of supported games because when I downloaded and installed this a few days ago for my 660 GTX FFXIV was not listed. I did try it with BF4 and it works great, thanks for the post OP!

It didn't work for me because I usually play on Borderless Windows mode, just have to switch to fullscreen mode and it will work just fine.

Totally agree. It needs some polish and add a few more features like selecting video recording resolution, temporary file location, among others. But for a first release (still BETA) it works quite good.

I thought wow this would be great. But no focus window.
I have a high end Geforce for 3-6 display depending on how big a project is I'm working on.

So when I game windowed mode is a must for me.

I disabled one of my two Nvidia 670's to test it out and was able to record at 1080p with no real noticeable drop in frame rate. The utility works pretty well, but as everyone else mentioned it needs some additional features (particularly being able to record in Windowed mode).

I'm getting a lot of frame skipping in the videos it produces. Anyone else with similar problem?

Would this work with an nVidia 540M?

No problems on GTX760.

I did a capture with my camera spinning at a constant rate with Fraps and Shadow Play

Notice the spinning isn't consistent indicating there are duplicate frames.

Edit: Think my original issue is gone, might be because I didn't reboot after update. I think the stuttering in youtube example is because of google converting 60 FPS to 30 FPS. Fraps was recorded with FPS fixed to 30FPS. I can't seem to figure out how to set 30 FPS in Shadowplay.

This is cool I would love to try it but I am having some problem and can't seem to find it on google atm will continue to search.

But the main problem I have is i updated my driver and nvidia experience to the most up to date, I went in and turned shadow play on. It than said something like 'shadow play is now activating' for like 5 seconds, and it populated my fields and my hot keys on the shadow-play tab on how to manually start and where the videos will be saved, how ever it isn't actually on, when i go to the power button its off and i can't record anything.

Does anyone know whats wrong? I can't click it on cause clicking the power button does nothing now.

was a super stupid fix, Apparently there are some times when it goes and says "shadow play is now activating" and after it activates it doesn't show anything so you are thinking it didn't actually activate. But once you kill Nvidia experience and start it back up its activated lol. So yeah <,<

Not bad, it seems to record pretty much the same as my FRAPS and OBS the only major difference is that this lets me record at 60 FPS where OBS and FRAPS couldn't encode fast enough so I was trapped recording at 30 FPS, which.......... makes the videos look that much more amazing.

How did u do this? is there a seperate setting? or are u not recording on highest quality? Cause The test I just did was perfect on max, 1080p at 60 FPS but it was only 30 seconds long and was 347 MB's

Noticed this today, will play around with it a little tomorrow.

Not a lot, but every now and then I'll see it. I dunno if that's my hard drive showing its age or not (game runs off an SSD while the video is saved on my 1TB HDD). The good part is it doesn't seem to affect my framerate in game one bit.

I record with Fraps set to 60fps all the time and don't experience this issue after uploading to YouTube. While I do experience the Shadowplay issue of it "sticking" on some frames, they might fix it with some software improvements in the future because this is technically the beta version.

I've used Shadowplay since BETA release day (Actually a bit earlier than that but lets hush on that) and it has a lot of pros and a couple of cons.
All the pros go to the quality, performance and efficiency while the cons go towards a few glitches/issues and naturally, the current lack of options/config (This is normal for a BETA, though).

I am on a GTX 780 GPU and play at 1440P resolution; so let me throw that at you right off the bat in case you experience something I don't.
I find that manual recording can create some stuttering/loss in frames with some games, while shadow mode records flawlessly, with my setup.
Therefore I usually have shadow mode on.

This is the result of going 1440P -> 1080P, plus quality being set to max.
I do not experience any FPS loss while using shadow mode, too.

So yes, for me, this is replacing FRAPS right now.

Here are some examples of shadopwplay being using it since it came out and it has it's ups and downs (like everything)


1080p downscaled from 1440p and using sweetfx. Because when you use shadowplay it will wash out the colors big time. The video will look very dull color wise.

It is barely noticeable for me while playing the game, but whenever cut-scenes are introduced I notice quite a bit of stuttering, whether or not I'm using Shadow mode or Manual mode.

In your Castlevania: Lords of Shadow example, I noticed pretty much the same thing as I get while viewing the cut-scene sections.

You can't and shadowplay records in variable framerate, not exact 60.

It would be really nice if they included laptop GPUs on the list! I'd like to think my 770M is at least as capable as a 600series normal GPU.

Laptop's are coming later. For right now it's only desktop.

I remember seeing someone do a YouTube video of Shadowplay on a 780M and claiming that it is only possible with that card for the time being.
