So, with all the negativity that we have in this forum, I thought I'd share a rather interesting story that happened to me as I was about to log out for the night.
Heading to the inn, I was sent a tell by a fellow which started off rather strangely: "You."
At first I was hesitant with the spam of gil sellers that we have in the game. However I decided to begin a conversation with the fellow.
It turns out, it was a rather simple conversation asking about how I enjoyed being Paladin, what I have done in the game so far, how good I thought I was with tanking and pretty much turned into a conversation about the game and endgame stuff and thoughts about what Square-Enix did and should do. All and all, I ended up staying up a good 20-30 minutes beyond what I wanted to just because this one stranger just decided to strike up a conversation with a person he didn't really know. He also offered to finish up The Praetorium with me at some point if I ever needed the help.
All and all, it made me realize that this honestly was one of those things that I was missing out of an MMO world: just the socialization between individuals and just shooting the crap out of the blue with your fellow gamer.
I don't honestly know if the story has cheered any of you up but, to me, I felt like this is one of the first MMOs in a while where someone just stopped and chitchatted. Either I met the chillest person who just strikes up random conversations here and there, or maybe, just maybe, not everything is bad with this game.
Sometimes, we have to remember that an MMO isn't always about the grind for gear; it's about the adventure, the fun memories and the friends we meet. Maybe going with that in mind instead of always complaining about the lack of endgame or the problems of a class in a game would go further on in enjoying oneself.

Yeah I will admit that it is a weird start to a conversation but all and all, it turned into a rather fun discussion that ended up keeping me awake another 20-30 minutes. Rather refreshing, I must say!

Cool story, bro.
But from my experience this game isn't very social. I'm not sure why, maybe it was just designed this way. But people here usually don't just randomly start conversations with you. If you talk to a random person or emote them they either will ignore you or find it very weird you talked to them for no particular reason. I have tons of people on my friend list. But I don't think I ever messaged them to talk about random crap. Neither have they. It's been the same in all FCs I've been to. People just talk about the game and that's it. -

i also noticed that this game seems to be rather non-social outside of LS & FC circles.
i've never seen people talk in /s chat nor general chattery in /shout... like...ever
it's rather sad really :/ -

I've had rather good luck chatting with folks. Even when gilspam was at its absolute worst, I tried to keep it on so I could see questions/comments from legitimate players. I try to answer when I can (provided I know the answer, of course). Sometimes, all I can offer is empathy, but at least the person knows they were heard.
Sometimes, if the question looks like it is coming from an absolute beginner, I'll respond in /tell and that has led to some wonderful conversations.
Just last night, for example, I had a dialog that went on for at least an hour, just answering questions from someone who is new to the game. I found it delightful and I hope s/he found it informative. I didn't get much questing/leveling done, but that's a-ok with me. I enjoyed conversing and I made a new friend! -

This happened about a month ago but I was on WHM and que in for an AK run.
Had a WAR tank, MNK, and I forget the other but the MNK in our group wasn't geared at all. He was still wearing level 30 gear and AF. I knew from the get go that we weren't going to make it passed the first boss, but I said nothing and pressed on forward with the group just to see how it would go.
We wipe a few times on the first boss and the one DD leaves. The WAR speaks up about the MNK gear and offer him some friendly advice and I did also.
I left the group afterwards and a few moments later I get a friend request. I picked up the request and it was from the WAR who I was grouped with. Shocking enough he looked me up on the lodestone to see if I was on the same server. At first I wondered why, because I hadn't said anything during the run and only added some sound advice to the MNK and left.
But the WAR started talking to me little by little, then we started grouping together.
Since then we've pretty much ran together and have enjoyed each other company.
Such things like this tho remind me of what I've missed since back in the early days of XI. It nice to know that there are a few people out there that still find the social aspect of MMO's. -
