Well, like the title says, I had a derpface moment and misclicked last night. I was melding out my gathering gear, no big deal, just cruising along... and all of a sudden ruined a very nice piece of crafting gear entirely by accident.

ughhhhhhh... this one hurt. Of all the mistakes I could have possibly made... and the damn forbidden meld went through!
Hopefully my misery and clumsiness can serve as a friendly reminder to double and triple check your melds. The gil sums involved aren't forgiving of a single error; nor is the Square Enix item replacement policy. I do think that this is a good occasion to offer a few suggestions though:
1) It would be very helpful if--when you fail a forbidden materia meld--the menu would reset *to the original item you were trying to meld*. It doesn't--it backs all the way out, and makes you reselect the item again. When you have a lot of gear in your armory chest, like I do, this makes for a long list. If the melding interface menu had reset to the item I was trying to meld, I wouldn't have made this stupid mistake.
2) I don't think it's unreasonable, considering situations like this, to change Mutamix so that he removes the last materia attached to an item, rather than all materia attached. That is, I would like to see him remove the furthest materia to the bottom on any item, not every single piece of materia. I would expect that this would be technically possible to implement, and would allow for correction of melding mistakes--without fundamentally changing the nature of materia removal.

Personally I don't see what could possibly brake the game by allowing individual materia removals. materia in general is already limited.

Agreed, I had the same thing happen and did not know he reset the whole thing. It would be very nice if we could do the last meld or even choose he one to remove not like we get it back so I don't see a big issue with it.

The melding interface looks like it was created by community college students. It's completely unacceptable, and needs to be re-tooled. I agree with you 100% OP.

Best suggestion would be to simply pay attention to what you are doing, or we could just go back to the 1.0 melding meaning if you fail you lose it all. The current system is fine a few tweeks here and there but in the end if player's are not paying attention that is the issue. Yes mistakes happen but player's need to get over it and not go crying to the dev's because they screwed up and want a re do, simple learn from what mistake you did and do not re-do that mistake. You know what they say no pain no gain.

Other than an single accidental meld on a NQ instead of a HQ, I've never derped on a meld... but I still think the ability to remove materia individually - even just the last meld - is necessary. I'm not sure if it's the same on Balmung, but two tier IV craftsmanship materia will run you about 260k here on Hyperion. It's a lot more than just meld success rates. Materia, crafting materia especially, is very expensive, and there's no reason someone should have to replace them just because of one screwed up meld. -

SE doesn't need to do anything to protect people here. You already have to click enough times to go through it. I don't need yet another confirmation box on top of what already exists.
You realize melding the wrong materia doesn't ruin an item right? You can talk to Mutamix in central thanalan to have your item wiped of materia.
Also, whenever someone is doing melding requests, I always ask them if they're sure if i think they're making a mistake. I'd honestly blame the person doing your melds for not catching an obvious error before confirming.
Also, its worth pointing out to the OP: You can still max the potential of that item even without wping the materia- You can't add any CP, and you can cap both control and craftsmanship with 3 materia. the remaining two slots can have whatever, because nothing else affects crafting. -

Let me ask you this questions, you get HQ ilv70 gear made and meld it to be the best it can be currently for you. You get some other ilv90 part, and this changes something so you should change 2 materia to be best you can be. If you want to make this change why cant you just drop 2 materia (any 2, 1 at a time) and remeld the extra 2 and be done. You shouldnt need to clear all 5 and start over. This is all the OP is really saying, he just used a derp moment an an example of one way you might want to remeld.
My old Coil BLM had to change a few melds for acc after getting his coil body to meet cap, just 2 changes and had to clean all and start over which was really not needed as 3/5 were kept the same. -
