Why should you get a shard PLUS a fish?
Botanists and Miners can get a shard OR an item.
Would rather see shard gathering from harvesting/mining become more practical. 1 shard per hit at all levels is ridiculous. The shard yield buffs don't help this since they can only be used once every 15 nodes or so regardless of how much GP gear you are wearing... All for just 2 extra shards per hit. This is why people have been using bots for their shards. It should not require 2-3 hours running between level 5 nodes to collect enough shards just to level up a crafting skill a few times. Shards themselves should not be something that earns players more than any other gathered item.
At the end of the day, Fisher are different from Miners and Botanist. The latter two may choose between several items, while Fishers are more subject to chance. So a Botanist or a Miner may choose to harvest shards, or stick to the other items if that's what they need. A Fisher might be farming for a certain type of fish, and thus getting shards can turn out as a drawback that slows him down. At the same time, gaining both shards and fish will overpower them.
But since Fishers rely on the kind of bait they use, how about being able to use nets? Where nets will gather shards...? Or something...
Fishers need a rod, and bait. Now... a Net could be the off-hand gear. Though keep in mind there are Fishing lures for the off-hand already. Maybe a choice could be given between "quantity" and "quality" this way. I have't fished in years. In respect to real fishing, lures actually replace bait or are in addition to it, and you tend to lose lures a lot if you're unobservant. Video game fishing is super-boring and nothing like reality. Fish are weather/time-of-day dependent as well. You can catch several fish in a few hours around sunup or sundown, that's just freshwater fishing.
Crystals though, no, I hear FFXI was terrible about this, and we don't need it here. I'd actually make the argument to remove crystals as a level 1 item entirely, put those up in the level 30+'s, and have them give random quantities.
In 1.0 I made an absolute killing with fishing by using alchemy to break the fish down into shards and crystals. It was an awesome way to make Gil but SE decided to remove the recipe from the game so that was the end of that.
Probably because unlike Miner and Botanist, Fishing is largely useless (as Yoshi wanted it to be) - Not completely useless but it would actually be balanced to allow that - It was never a problem fishing up shards in 1.0 nor fishing up fish, shards and/or turning fish into shards.
There should be Nets for fishing. Nets would be able to catch bottom dwelling fish, shards, and random treasures that are stuck on the bottom.

They should just make shard exp somewhat scale with the level of the node you are gathering from. 12xp at level 46 is worthless, not to forget the tedious process of actually gathering enough shards to do anything meaningful with them.
Probably already been said, but... All those fish with zero purpose? Bring back the Alchemy Shard/Crystal/Cluster recipes...
Here here!!! Bring back Fish > Shard Alc synths. It made leveling ALC uber-easy, yes it single handedly allowed me to cap mine and both my retainers slots for shards, crystals, and Clusters.
Alas it wont happen....clusters are built into the hidden node mechanic (and a fairly solid part of it too) and same with shards/crystals for regular nodes. Perhaps fishing should use consumable baits to allow you to target shards/crystals/clusters...give and take....just a thought
Thinking about it... A GP ability which converts the last fish you caught (works similarly to Mooching I'd imagine) into Shards/Crystals/Clusters wouldn't be bad... Specific fish of course (the "useless" ones) and the Clusters could remain hidden by simply using some of the rare fish... 300GP after catching a Titanic Sawfish nets you a Water Cluster, something like that...
GP really needs a purpose on Fishing already...
Fishing is so useless and lacking in content it might as well not even exist. I am extremely disappointed with Fishing in this game after absolutely loving it in FFXI and all the content that it had with it. It's really a direct downgrade in every way possible from FFXI fishing - you could fish in FFXI and essentially make that the ONLY thing you did in that game and play for years that way. I leveled fishing to 50 in 3 days of casually fishing and now it sits at 50 unused because it's essentially completely useless.
fishing should be able to get shards. They can set the Ward abilities from the other gatherers, but they don't seem to do anything.
It would be nice to see fishing become viable other than just a hobby. I realize it's still possible to make money from fishing if you're smart about what you fish and when you fish, but it doesn't even come close to Mining or Botany. It takes me hours to fish up enough sharks for my friend to make shark oil and Mahi are extremely hit or miss. You'd think in addition to other improvements, they'd make it so using a higher level bait/lure would entice more higher level fish as opposed to all the garbage fish that seem to turn up.
I wish they would give people more incentive to fish, there is no reason for it to be as useless as it is currently. I will start by saying I am only around a lvl 5 fisher, so some of these things may already exist.
1. Create an NPC that specifically purchases fish, each fish gives a different rate (higher for rarer fish), and the reward can either be gil or perhaps even tomestones or maybe even a new kind of similar currency that can in turn be used to purchase items from an NPC. I played another game where you could turn the fish in for points and the points could be used at an NPC who sold like 15 different items..most of which would fetch good prices on the market, making fishing fairly lucrative.
2. There should be a chance of catching some sort or rare items..I mean it should be very rare..but it should be a possibility.
3. I like the idea of catching shards, but you should catch either a fish..or a shard and not both.
As it stands now there is really no reason for me to be excited about leveling my fisher class...there is basically no reward at all other than me being able to say hey look I am a lvl 50 fisher wooo!
Need a fishing tackle with multiple hooks to catch more than one fish, and to pick up some shards.
Fishing has bigger problems than no shards.
My problem is if they wanted to make it so usless its not botted or easy why not make the mini game more advanced and difficult I remember the 1.0 version at launch seemed more along these lines..Are their still gonna be hackers? Yes! But atleast its not as mindless as hitting a node and hitting select button a few times repeat.
Like I said earlier and as others have said SE just need to put the recipes that were in 1.0 that allowed and Alchemists to create crystals and shards from fish. The higher level the fish the more shards or crystals the fish yielded, it also different fish yielded different types of crystals and shards so if you wanted a certain type of crystal or shard you would target a specific fish.
I thought it was pretty good and allowed both alchemy and fishing to make some gil. The higher level you got in both your fields the higher the amount of shards/crystals would yield. I really don't know why SE removed it, well I suppose it was to get rid of the fish bots but now we have mining and botany hacks so that obviously didn't work.
I understand why the devs said they not want it to be more than just a relaxing hobby but they already have food with fish in it so they kind of changed that. I am for shards from fishing with a net or new tool but I'm only for it if they deal with the botting problem first. Because fishbots if not already around will definitely be around when it is more profit oriented like they do now with shards.
Shards would barely ever sell if they brought those recipes back, especially now that we have auto-craft.
Not having the recipes makes a valuable market, and really the only craft that shard farming is terrible for is Cooking as you use the same amount of shards as a piece of gear, but for a single consumable and is in serious need of rebalancing.
Fishing getting shards would at least give people that level it more money-making options and increase the supply and lower prices to more reasonable amounts.
