You can't do it in dungeons in raids where it would be useful because you have to switch classes. Repair bills are so cheap it's not even worth the time. Is this just something they left in because at one time it was worth it?

I got a few levels repairing stuff when my crafts were lower than 40, at this point having all 50's for me doesn't help much with repairs as dark matter is about 150g each, which pretty much equates to an NPC repair, without having to switch to every class and find every single weapon needing fixing. If there was a fix all button it would be another story.
Dangit, I had no idea that DoH got EXP for repairing. I'm going to start repairing everything I can directly from now on (leveling all Doh/DoL together).
Was better when you could actually gather the dark matter with a gathering class...
You can repair armor for your crafting classes no matter where you are, gathering classes out in the field, and combat classes anywhere in the open world (exp grinding/FATEs can take its toll on armor). The only place it's not useful is where you said, inside dungeons, but it's useful everywhere else outside of that.
Also, it's still cheaper to repair them yourself even after they made repair bills ridiculously cheap.
Also, I've heard you can change classes and repair in between the turns in the coil.
Wasn't grade 5 Dark Matter 80 gil ? :|
So it's basically 60% cheaper than repairing a fully broken item at the npc.
But they do need to add player repairs.
Crafters need to be able to repair other people's bound gear.
That's true. I don't know why they haven't added something so simple, yet they have added something as complex as meld requests.
Before they nerfed repair costs it was something in the range of 5-10K for a full repair. This was back when people just started hitting 50 and didn't have 1-2 million gil sitting around doing nothing. There was a lot of players swearing up and down that they couldn't grind/raid all day without farming due to the cost...
So SE nerfed the repair costs instead of forcing players to use the in game repair system or level crafting jobs. Now the DoH repair system is basically unneeded and a product of a former system that's just hanging around for those who care or still want to use it.

Right now, it seems only less expensive to do a self-repair if the condition of the equipment is less than about 50%. If its more than 50%, its cheaper for an NPC repair (since they charge you based on how damaged it is). Unfortunately, for self repair, you use up one dark matter despite its condition:
1% damage = 1 dark matter.
100% damage = 1 dark matter.
Which means you are in the position where you either pay for NPC repairs or wait until damage is more than 50%. Of course this means you could go into DF with 55% condition and end up with broken equipment inside dungeon.
On top of all this, you have to switch to each job and search your equipment one by one to repair. Unsure why no repair all for self.
I think what they need to do is:
1) Add repair-all-self (regardless of job I have, if I have skill, I can repair all myself).
2) Scale player repairs to always add 100% to item condition.
If item 0%, and repair, item 100%.
If item 50% and repair, item 150%
If item 99% and repair, item 199%
Can not repair if item 100% or more.
This ensure full usability of the dark matter (no loss), avoids waiting to the last minute to save a few gil (or just giving up and using the scalable NPC costs), and there is no downside for having 'over-repaired' item.
It's just too much of an hassle to look for the exact gear that needs repair (no durability is shown on icons in the Armoury Chest) and then repair it. In the end it's just less hassle to use NPC repair.
If you have a level 50 ARM/BSM/GSM/LTW/WVR, or any combination thereof, your time is probably better spent making money than wasting time trying to save a few hundred gil each time you repair.
A lot of the interface in FFXIV are convoluted beyond reason, and this is one perfect example.
I love this idea. I'm leveling all DoH/DoL classes so currently I repair all my gear myself but it is a hassle waiting for everything to get low enough to be worth the repair and then having to switch to multiple classes while hunting through my bag for the right item to fix. It's like a minigame except not as fun.
repair gear for other player was a good feature in 1.0, I have no idea why SE remove it...
they should just add a "repair all" button and make it so u can repair anything on any class ur on if u have the appropriate skill. so lets assume i got 50 ltw and gsm i can repair my armor and jewels while in a dungeon playing with my monk.
It was in the game in 1.x. They took it out in ARR. Before you could have a hammer icon by your name and crafters could run by and repair your items. You set the amount of money or items to be traded for doing such repairs. They didn't like what you offered? No repairs. But mostly people did it for free just because.
Why did they take it out? Only that kooky nut Yoshi-P knows. Please look forward to it.
