The idea of being able to use a Tent item to make an instanced tent where you could go inside and take a break without having to worry about monsters attacking you has always sound attractive to me.
What do you people think?

This would be awesoe! The idea really reminds me breath of fire serie ^^
Also, since this game is bringing the propoosal of a more realistic world, would be awesome the camping working like Baldur's Gate one.
- At every 3~4 days you must sleep. If you don't your character may become so tired he would crash.
- You cannot sleep at cities outside Inns. If you do you might end jailed or, at least, cheased by local patrols until you leave the city.
- You can set camp outside. It often would work as well as sleeping in an Inn. But if you're camping outside a city some things can happen (rare):
a) your camp being attacked by wild beasts
b) your camp being attacked by robbers, which would end in missing items/gil when you wake up. Of course no armor/weapon would be stolen...only common loot. This would also give you the option of tracking the robbers in order to recover the items.
c) your camp being attacked by slavers, factions and similar stuff, where you guys would need to fight for life and, if you lose, you would be taken prisioner/slave. This would be a nice way to unlock certain areas like hideouts, way of joining factions, many quests regarding escaping or rescuing players.
I believe adding a camp system would be very interesting for the game! ^^
No one else likes this idea? :S
Well I certainly like it o.o
At the very least, were that too complex, you might simply go the Mabinogi route and add a campfire ability lets players set a fire they can sit around and heal faster and get enhanced food effects at .. but indeed a tent would be all the moreso.
I like it! :D
I quite like that idea. I'd love to set up camp out in Coerthas to just craft for a while!
Also, we can point multiple campfire scattered around all over eorzea...we could just have an interaction option to set camp when we get close of a campfire.
I actually think this is a smart and creative idea. I'm uncomfortable with the thought regarding being completely invulnerable though. There should be some disadvantage, such as Lienn mentioned.
Yes, I agree. The best thing would perhaps be to be able to camp anywhere outside cities, but for a certain cost (ex. specific materials nedded, like twigs for bonfires etc.). And the tents could be a bit smaller, like one-man tents, even if they were to house several players.
In any case, I would really want us to be able to actually enter that tent. Although obviously only our own tent, not those who belong to people outside our group.
Yeah, instancing seems a bit odd.. frankly I'd think it simply better to balance the costs and make it possible to share other people's camps (although honestly, if you couldn't share the whole idea would be a bit redundant anyway).
I might be able to agree, although I'm slightly sceptical. It's like when you're out camping, you don't want others to bust the party and enter your private tent. But then again, most of us play for the very reason of playing together with others. I should think one could decide wether to make the camp open for others or not, when you put it up. How's that?
i disagree somewhat with that. I think instances could be a decent thing. but say everyone gets dumped in the same place, like a big camp site. Like people said, have the odd encounter with bandits or area specific bad guys, kinda like the boats in XI. you could cower inside tents marked as safe zones for safety or go outside and kick some ass
I love this idea, like so many have said; it opens up many opportunities for you or your party to get a leve type scenarios of many types good and bad. and adds a thing of realism and as far as cottages that last maybe a week real time you have to keep protected somehow like a enemy appear if are in the general area of the cottage at random.
The thing is getting the balance so that resting in the tent doesnt punish the party for wanting a 10-30 minute break from sp/xping without making it mandatory before starting a adventure. The way i imagine it is you get a signet/sigil like effect that gives you increased stats and sp/xp gain determined by how long you spent resting capped off at a certain amount of time. The increase wouldnt be enough to bridge the gap of sp/xp lost through resting but then if you add facilities into the camp to help players restock and replenish their gear it might be atleast be desireable enough to take a break every now and then.
Also if this sort of thing is implemented would be nice for a minigame that players can play with each other rather than just the npcs =) like.... say tetra master.
Alaltus tossed a really good idea ^^ Would be very nice the game offering a way of parties doing a "friendly break". It was annoying at FFXI when you asked for a quick break and people already start whinning about it. Would be nice something like you said...let's say a sp "camp gauge" that can store up to 30 min breaks and that are consumed over time, offering doubled SP during the time its active. It would be like if the PT never took the break ^^
@Lienn
that sounds too good but I doubt it would happen xD
Not really. I've seen MMOs with similar feature already...and anyway it has a time limit...its not like the dude going to sleep and leaving the character logged in a tent so he will have double SP proportional to the 8hrs he was asleep.
Also, there are the other points posted already...using the tent wouldn't be a "100% safe" option, always having the risk of attacks and stuff.
But the most important point would be that it would offer an option for a more corteous approach...in this game people are too aggressive, too surly...would be nice an option that favors party for more socializing and offers a more friendly approach to have hardcore and casual players being able to play together...be cause right now this game rule is "Follow my pace or GTFO".
neat idea! i dig it.
Love the idea of camping/tents
This has been in FF titles since the very first one, would be a wonderful addition to FFXIV
