I'd make instant cooldowns instant instead of having to wait for animations to end.
Smashing each cooldown button repeatedly gets tiresome.

I would bring back Skill Chains and Magic Bursts! That was the coolest MMO mechanic ever and really set FF apart from the rest of the MMO world. Beats skill rotation fighting anyday. Why did SE ever abandon this? :(
Add an account wide retainer for the server you play on, or add the ability to friend your alts offline. Secondly, I'd fire anyone who was against this or told me it couldn't be done..
The skill chain mechanic from FFXI was pretty awesome and would be an awesome addition but wouldn't work in the games current state. You can hardly see when a weapon skill goes off now because all the flashy animations and forget about skill chains in large groups (Odin and behemoth come to mind) lol.
My vote would go for some type of XP party system just to give another way to level up. XP gain this way could be made good in order to encourage group play. You could probably do it now to a certain extent by going to an area where mobs are like 10 levels higher than you maybe. Anyways I'm just rambling now lol
Be able to command my pet while casting my own skills.
More methods to farm tomes :p
Give Wanderer's Palace a better purpose for being in the game.
Without a doubt....GCD GCD GCD GCD GCD GCD
I'd ditch the class > job system and just make jobs (weapon based is ok but still limits the full range of FF jobs... maybe not x group of weapons = y job but subset of x which are y weapons make you y job.)
Have to say the abilities being hamstrung by animations and WS cd even if they are "off cd" is another thing I could live without. However, one of my good friends quit this game because you use the abilities too fast relative to 1.2x...
I don't care, three things.
I'd get rid of animation lock, already have gcd, ani-lock is dumbest device ever.
I'd make a method of macros that let you stack abilities and execute in a dingle go.
I'd take shield bash off the GCD, and instead give it a 10s CD, which I still think is too short, but it is what it is.
Kura, there appears to be a wolf in your fridge.
Animations have nothing to do with how long you have to wait to use an ability. It's a flat timer regardless of how long an animation lasts.
Probably because players abandoned it in FFXI when they realized that it actually made kills slower. If they make skillchains too strong, people will only want to use them. Make them too weak (as they did in XI) and people will never use them. There's no middle ground, and this way is just easier.
I would bring back the movement mechanics of 1.0 so people are not float skating/insta stop from /run but had that sense of weight to them from 1.0. {I realize why the devs did it and I would like to have this feature but not lose the benefits that not having it has allowed. hehe}
The mob claim system to discourage kill stealing.
XI style auction house instead of retainers.
Belts and waist armor.
Woopsie this is more than one thing....
Allowing damage to go off as you press the ability, and not tie it to the fucking animation. Who thought that having the damage/cure go off AFTER the animation was a good idea? What is wrong with you?
Also allow me to control my pet while casting spells, and allow me to have full control over my pet so it doesn't cast the most retarded abilities at the worst time.
Also remove positional requirements. I was really sad to see them only be necessary for the first WS in a combo but they just don't work with this game at all, or at least make it so that meeting the requirements allows you to have a slight buff, while you can still add your DoTs/whatever the hell you're doing without them.
Also the physical range of DDs is really pathetic. Increase that.
Other than that, I enjoy the combat.
I'd change FATEs to encourage team play instead of solo-with-bots. Include Healing as a method of participation. Require explicit joining to FATEs so that they can scale appropriately based on the roles taking part.
Also having bosses which use abilities which are impossible to escape due to LAG makes game frustrating as hell .
I like the idea of having to run out of AOE but to make it so you run out of AOE and still get hit is just pure bad design. Maybe if game was on a LAN it would be no excuse to escape but its internet and there are magical things called LAG SPIKES .
Instant abilities be actually instant, and remove GCD on them.
