Last night I went and upgraded my video card from an AMD 7850 to an NVIDIA GTX 770 (MSI OC Edition). The performance on my old AMD 7850 was actually fine for FFXIV; the upgrade was mainly for a few other games I play.
Anyway, after installing the new card along with the latest drivers I fire up FFXIV and immediately notice problems. As soon as I get to the startup menu I start noticing screen stuttering. The particles floating in the background would stutter/skip every couple seconds. This only becomes worse once I get into the character selection screen, where the same thing happens but only more pronounced. I log into the game, and everything seems fine for the most part. However, after a couple of minutes of playing I begin to notice FPS drops and stuttering within the game world.
So far I've tried a number of things. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers, as well as reverting back to older drivers. I don't think this is a common issue, as I couldn't find any reports of this online. I'm having no problems with other games/programs, only FFXIV.
System specs are the following:
-3.6 GHz Intel Core i7-3820 (64 bit Quad-Core)
-16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
-MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
-800W Power Supply
-2TB SATA III 6.0Gb/s 7200RPM HD
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been extremely frustrating, especially since I spent $400+ on something that's supposed to be an upgrade. :confused:

Yes, uninstalled all of the previous AMD drivers before putting in the card. Not sure what the GPU temperature was, don't think that could've been the problem though.

Edit: For example, my Dell inspiron laptop- it is a core i5 CPU and it over heat from 40 degrees to 95 degrees playing league of legands becasue I haven't cleaned out the dust in the fans. The fps dropped from 90fps (at 40 degrees) to 6fps (at 90 degress).
So, my advice is for you to check for temperature of both CPU and GPU. Because that's the first sign of trouble. If nothing is wrong with it (ie. temperature and power supply to the card), you can cross a tick off "hardware" issue. Then you go on "software" (ie drivers) and try to reinstall them. If problem still persist and you have no problem with your old GPU. Return that card and get a new one -

Sounds like a bad card.
All major manufacturers warranty their cards out to just about 100c these days - Most vendors will list 95c but, auto-shutoff is at 100c....Not that it will get that hot, especially the 770 but, it's possible.
If you have time, I'm guessing there's either a lingering driver issue and/or you didn't actually completely purge the AMD driver.
It's suggested that you use the catalyst removal tool on the site and then do a Nvidia cleanse just to be safe. Also, go back to another WHQL if you're having an issue on that driver set.
I have quad 780's w/the hack and I see absolutely 0 issues in game even with only 1 enabled.
If you still have issues on the WHQL, reinstall windows. If you STILL have issues on the new WHQL and new windows, send the card back.
P.S. all major computer parts are warrantied out to 100c from MFCTR. Half life doesn't occur until 120c due to a bad solder. (Can happen at lesser temps but, is extremely rare) -

Man, this is so incredibly frustrating!!! I got home and followed a very thorough guide on how to get rid of ALL traces of old AMD/NVIDIA drivers. Shut down my computer, looked into the case to make sure everything was ok. Rebooted my computer and installed a fresh set of the latest NVIDIA drivers. SAME PROBLEM!
I turned on MSI Afterburner to see if it was a GPU temp problem; GPU temperature reached a MAX of 36 degrees C! No idea what the hell the problem is, and not sure what else I could do. So frustrating!! :mad: -

The reason I asked whether your system recognise your GPU at Device Manager is so I could make sure your PC is not running it's internal graphics from the CPU instead from your new card. Some CPU can even handle crysis without the assistance of a graphics card, but FF14 is a CPU and ram intensive game- on top of an already graphics enriched environment, it would need both the CPU and GPU to operate together.Quote:

I don't think either PCI slot is plugged directly into my PSU. I don't even think it's possible with my cable management setup.Quote:

The card won't properly function in other games and not FFXIV based on you plugging in you power. The slots are setup so you cannot install the cables incorrectly. The card should not even power on without both being plugged in. I would suggest doing a complete driver install and clean all old ones out of your system. For some, there have been some issues with FPS, artifacts, and crashes. Some even BSOD. You can find a few different threads in the tech support forum trying to diagnose these issues. To my knowledge, there has yet to be a good workaround or fix. Another thing to note, Nvidia has yet to put out drivers that have optimizations for FFXIV yet. Hopefully these drivers will help fix some of these problems.

Ok, so a few updates for everyone.
1) I think there may actually be an overheating problem. I turned on MSI Afterburner to monitor the temps on the GPU, and attempted to play FFXIV for approximately 10 minutes. All I really did was log on to my character, and run around a little bit (I was in Camp Drybone). I went back to the MSI Afterburner and saw my GPU temp reached a high of 97 degrees Celsius! I'm guessing that can't be normal.
2) For the people suggesting I plug directly into the power supply, maybe you can clarify a bit because I'm a little confused. Right now, I have a PCI cable that plugs directly into my motherboard and is split into 2x output cables. One of the output cables has 6 pins and the other has 6 + 2 pins, if that makes any sense. My graphic card came with 2x cables that converts the 6 pin output cables into 8 pins. So right now I have a converter on the 6 pin cable and on the 6 + 2 pin cable (only 6 pins being used of course). Those two converters are going directly into my graphic card (my graphic card has 2x 8 pin slots). I'm guessing this is not correct? What should I be doing differently? -

At first I thought it was just the new driver nVidia put out (3.27 I think?) but then I remembered I've been having some pretty bad FPS issues the last few days as well, even in the starter areas.

Zand, which PSU do you have? Is a modular one? Please check that the card is connected DIRECTLY to the PSU, no to the motherboard. Usually the high end PSUs came already with cables that can be connected directly to the card, instead of using the adapters that came with the 770.

After taking off both panels on my case, and seeing which cables went where, I ended up plugging everything in correctly. My power supply has two PCI express cables come out of it. Both are split into two different outputs (1x 6 pin and 1x 6+2 pin). I plugged one of the PCI express cables directly into the 6 pin adapter on the video card, leaving the 6+2 pin output just hanging. Then the second PCI express cable doesn't quite reach, so I used one of the adapters that came with the video card and plugged in the 6 pin portion into the adapter which turns it into an 8 pin, and then stuck that into the video card as well. Anyway, after doing all of this I still had the same exact issue.Quote:

Ok, so this is really strange. A friend of mine let me borrow his EVGA GTX 660, just to see if a lower powered card would make a difference. This card, like my 7850, only required one 6 pin PCI-E plugin and as far as power goes, only requires 28 amps coming out of the +12 rail (which my PSU has). Same exact problem again! Everything seems to be fine except FFXIV which is getting the same screen stuttering and crappy FPS. What gives? Does my computer just not like NVIDIA cards?

You setup seems to be right, just one question, did you connect the two inputs on the adapter? My suggestion is to try to make that second cable reach the VGA and use it instead of the adapters.

I don't think it's possible. However, for the GTX 660 which only requires 1x 6 pin plugin, I was able to plugin the PCI-E from the PSU directly into the card. Still having the exact same issue, even after reinstalling FFXIV. As I mentioned before, FFXIV seems to be the only game so far affected by this.

But the other games you're playing aren't as graphic demanding as FFXIV. The other thing I'm guessing the problem is, is a faulty PSU. You can ask for your friend's PSU and test.

I test at least 100 cards/week, more sometimes depending on the season and those cards ONLY get hot if the user has played with the settings.

Reinstall windows, reinstall the card and run it vanilla, don't even install Afterburner. Btw, Afterburner + EVGA cards are known to have serious issues, thus Precision was made. Might give it a go after the windows installation. -

---In the window that appears click "Save All Information...", if you're prompted about checking for driver signing, do not check.
----Upload the contents of the file to "www.pastebin.com" and include the link here. There should be no personal information included in that file, but feel free to check through it to be sure. It WILL include drive names and the computer name. You may erase those if you feel it is necessary.
If any of what I listed above is not true, please correct the statement.
EDIT: I see you've used afterburner - make sure it is NOT currently applying any profile to the card, allow the card to run at its defaults. You can begin tuning once the problem with FFXIV is worked out.
I will also disagree with a previous poster about Afterburner disagreeing with EVGA cards - in my multiple experiences those two have always played together well. There is also virtually no difference between Precision and Afterburner aside from the interface and some additional features in Afterburner (screen recording, mainly), they both operate on the same Rivatuner foundation. Precision, to my knowledge, was not created due to any issue with Afterburner but rather for EVGA to advertise a similar product with their own branding. Again, feel free to continue your use of Afterburner once the problem is resolved. -

some Inno3D, KFA2s and Galaxy cards require a vBios update otherwise they are restricted to low clock rates with recent drivers.
97c in this game is way to high btw, i recommend checking airflow / RMA the card. -
