Screw it, im done. This lag is no longer acceptable.

I've been patient. I was patient thru the early access BS, I was patient when none of my friends could create characters on my server, I have been patient thru all the stupid issues this game has had, and I have finally reached my breaking point.

During the day time the lag has been unacceptable. It first started as dungeon lag. I was not able to run any dungeon before about 4:00pm pst. Before that point it was like playing in a strobe light. After 4:00pm it was much more bearable with smaller bursts.

Each maintenance it seems to get worse and worse. Today I decided, knowing that I cant run dungeons due to the lag, that I would work on my crafting. Well today the lag has moved from the dungeons to the server. Now I cant even harvest nodes in a timely manner. It takes, due to the lag, about 45 seconds to a whole minute to harvest a single node. Then before my Leve is finished I get disconnected.

The lag should be getting better... not worse. Every update it gets worse. I am done. I will come check back on this game in a few months. Right now it is a broken pile of crap.

Playing in a strobe like... points to your computer. Lag is network latency where ping is high, but there would be no graphical problems during something like that.

Its not an FPS issue. It has nothing to do with my system. It is the network latency of the servers. I play lots of online games, and games in general. I have a high end gaming rig, and have been PC gaming for over 15 years now. I am also a computer technician/network administrator by trade.

The issue is not with my system, it is not with my ISP. This issue only exists in FF14, and I am not the only one experiencing this.

Let me better explain what I mean by strobe light. Players will be moving then everything stops.. Just stops. Then everything super speeds up to catch up with what really happened. Sometimes the pause is a second, some times its 10 seconds. If it was a FPS issue this would happen 24 hours a day. But it doesn't. It happens between the same time frame every single day, and clears up towards the evening. Pretty sure the problem isn't my video card only working half of the day each day.

I also experience so much lag throughout the game. As with yourself I have a high end gaming PC, which works fine with every other game.

Started playing this with 3 friends, on the same world(Odin), and me and one of my friends have really bad lag in all aspects of the game. Ive searched for people with similar issues and there seems to be many.. Some have determined that the Server address they connect to is different to their friends, and the server they are connected to is the cause of the lag. I cant be 100% sure, but it seems that its the server on FF14's side, and this needs to be addressed or more people will just leave. If it gets any worse, I will be one of them, and I really dont want to have to stop playing because the game is great.

Happens to me and every one else I know on the EST coast. We call it the 2pm lag. This is the worst it has ever been though.

What server are you guys on ? I haven't noticed any lag while doing dungeon or whatever since the 1st week, even then it was very uncommon.

EDIT: nvm :p it's tells the server beside our name...

Edit: And neverming again .. Tonight is pretty laggy e_e but 1st time it happens for me ...

I've had the same sort of issues. Recently i've been crafting and when i craft in a populated area(Ul'dah, Whitebrim) this can be a big problem. Where as if i go to the wolves den or some where empty i have no issues.

Whatever dude. I built my own PC, and it is a fricking beast. Its what I do to make my living and I have been doing it for almost 15 years. If I didnt know how to build a PC I would not be able to support and feed myself doing it.

The issue is on SE's end. This is more than obvious with the insane amount of ppl that are affected. Even if I had a low end PC this would still be an issue. So the power or lack of power my PC has is not exactly relevant in this situation.

Yeah our /fc is always full of people complaining about lag. Its obvious a SquareEnix problem no matter how forcefully they try to dissociate from it.

Was so horrible. I was receiving 1200+ and sending 0 sometime.

Speedtest.net Showed 30 Mbps DL and 5.5 UL

Seriously has me worried, I not in game at the moment and am hoping it doesn't appear again later when I log on.

I am dealing with the exact same issues that you are.
I played Beta, perfectly fine.
I played for over a month, minimal - no lag, not a single drop.

Fast forward to Saturday, I am getting the "strobe-light" effect.
I can't play dungeons, I can just join a Fate Party and pretend like I can tell what's going on. Until today, now it just 90000 error/drops me.

I ran all the tests on my system. It's not me, my CPU, GPU, OS, other programs interfering, my connection, AT&T, etc..

It is SE dropping the ball. If they don't fix it soon, this game is doomed. I was not concerned either, until it began to affect me.

ive experienced what you say before OP ... on my laptop :P Have never experienced much lag on my other. Ive seen my mining suddenly stop up and my internet going down for a couple of seconds, but thats a whole other error :P

im in the east coast, miami, balmugn server... no lag... smooth like silky silk..cause regular silk is not as smooth..

It is the same as you are experiencing. Half the time my choco is hanging out by the mender in Mor Dhona client side (small map and in game), while I can see it following me server side (larger map and it's heals and taking damage).

It is like I have an invisible choco.

I get the lag crafting as described in Ul'dah. I can't see most of the mobs in FATEs. I rarely see Titan actually jump. Sudeenly he is gone, I figure he jumped and I move to the edge.

And once again, when someone reports it, we get insulted that our gear is not up to snuff because "they don't have our problem".

If you don't have the problem, don't add to the conversation. Why is it so hard to just move along?

Sorry to hear you are having issues with lag. I play mostly evenings, and while I get a bit of lag here and there it's nothing like you are complaining about (unless trying to do Odin or something where there are massive numbers of players all in one area).

I too am a network admin and I'm not convinced it's an issue with the servers at all.

They have bought some really high end hardware!

I believe the issue is with the internet backbone the datacenter/s are connected to.

I believe the infrastructure of these datacenters, specifically the fiber optic trunk line is not sufficient enough to carry the traffic and is causing these lag spikes at certain times of the day.

I play on the West/Best/Left Coast and I have no noticeable lag. I have a "gaming" PC and my game for the most part is smooth except for the same issues that everyone else has inside of cities.

One thing that people always fail to look at is your actual connection stability. You could have the fastest download in the world, but if you have packet loss you're screwed.

I use this website and its sister website speedtest in order to determine whether or not my actual ISP is the culprit. If I see packet loss or jitters then I know something is up. If you Ace pingtest with 0% packet loss and very few Jitters then it is not your ISP.

You could have issues with the drivers or settings on your computer. I received a 6k on my benchmark and have no issues playing. Maybe you have a few settings that you could tweak such as taking vsync off if you have it on, allowing your game to go uncapped in fps.

Maybe you need to clear the cache or registry using ccleaner. You could have a fast computer but without the proper upkeep you could be losing that performance. Also if you haven't cleaned your computer in a while it could be overheating, causing the stuttering.

As for the argument that you've been doing something for X amount of years, I understand what you're trying to pitch, but on the internet it doesn't validate anything. I know plenty of people who have been doing a job for 10+ years and they still suck at it, and many more than have played games for 15+ years that suck. Not an attempt to flame, but one of those facts that a lot of people throw out that don't mean diddly squat since theres no benchmark to compare it to.

Claiming to be a tech, or gamer for x+ years was not said to validate my claim. What validates my claim is the fact that the problem is not localized to me, and is affecting tons of players. You may claim your intention is not to flame, but your comments do not add anything to the discussion.

This is a known issue affecting many players. It has nothing to do with personal system specs, status as a gamer, or occupation.

Also.. According to speed test and ping test.. my connection is perfect. But I already knew that because I already tested my stuff localy to make sure the issue was not on my end before coming to the forums.

The issue is clearly with either SE's servers, the data center, or as someone else stated the internet backbone the datacenter/s are connected to. ISP throttling can also be an issue. But what can you do when you have already called your ISP and they claim the issue is not on their end.

you could also just bring up the command line on your Windows PC and type the following:

ping www.google.com -l 1024 -t

This will ping Google's server with 1024 bytes of data continuously every second for as long as you need.
The -l 1024 switch add a load to the request and the -t switch just forces the ping request to continue indefinitely or until you cancel it.

Run it for a while and see if you are getting any packet loss.

This is spot on!!

From closed beta 1 all the way up until 3 weeks after launch, I didn't experience any of these issues. It was after a certain maintenance that I started to experience the "freeze and speed up" lag. I also notice that it seems more common on Mondays and Tuesdays (which are the two busiest days after a weekly reset) where everyone is trying to queue up for AK to farm Mythology tomes or people starting a fresh CoB run.

In my server today we were in a 8 man group doing fates in Northern Thanalan and 2 of the party members were experiencing unreal lagspikes. On my screen fate was over teammate was dead and he was telling us from TS that he is still alive and doing the fate. The lag wasnt seconds but mins. After 2-3 mins he died on his screen. The other one had the same problem and they werent playing from same connection or area. While he was dead on my screen I could see his corpse moving lol. We had such a good laugh! Make more games like this pls. Oh and ppl saying that the game hasnt a lag problem: Have u browsing this forum lately? Its full of lag posts that unfortunately disappear strangely.

I agree. I personally make my living as a Systems Admin for a mid size company monitoring and regulating servers. The packet loss and high latency times points towards the backbones ports being overloaded by so much traffic it drops the connection and throws the dreaded MD5 flag. When all of the data is reaffirmed and the client can confirm all data sent with the host the speed up of everything on your screen is seen. The client has to resend it's packets to the host, the host has to confirm packets, the host sends packets to the client where the client has to confirm delivery at the same time maintaining the synchronization of host and client time.

Some hops are worse than others and it seems that Square knows this and tries to re route some clients away from latency ridden datacenters. It's a delicate balance though. You re route too much, you are in the same place you were. You don't re route and the problem persists. You also have to field these concerns with the fiber provider and backbones where they have to investigate the issue, confirm it, and either upgrade the hardware (yeah right), re distribute port assignments, or re route traffic (yeah right).

I don't know what kind of hardware they have, but if I were the Sr Systems Admin at the Montreal offices, I wouldn't want to spend anything as I already have racks available to me. I would only upgrade if I was told to and even then, I have to send in the price quote, get approval from corporate, contact the distributor, order the parts, wait for them to arrive, receive the parts, schedule a time for the change out (confirming with corporate and waiting for the head honchos to give me the dates), get the techs to perform the change out, QA the hardware, network the new hardware with the old and intermesh, load the software, QA The software, and finally boot the system up again.

This process can take weeks depending on man power, stock, and backordering processes.

It is possible that by adding more racks they can change the route paths and ease up on the overloading, but this is only treating the symptom, not curing the disease. The main problem is their backbone not having enough bandwidth to funnel all the users connecting efficiently and without packet loss.

This is my problem in a nut shell. I do not know what the issue is (even if I have uneducated ideas). At first I figured it was overloaded servers, which is something I have seen in many games. I usually wait those issues out and they resolve. The problem here has gotten worse unfortunately, and was so bad last night two dungeon runs were almost impossible (we're talking 6 to 8 second pauses before everything catches up).

I do find issues with packet losses to their server within Montreal, which I don't get anywhere else. No clue why or how, it just is.

Hey, I believe you know how to build your own PC, if you've been doing it for 15 years, I have no reason to doubt you as it would've been hard NOT to want a build a beast yourself, I have 11 years myself, and I still have to put up with the argument that someone will always say I dont know what I'm doing, but whatever to the haters, they're mad because we don't have to pay someone to make something awesome. :)

Now onto your situation. You're issue where everything slows down and then speeds up to catch up is most definitely a connectivity issue but I have to ask you if you've checked the following:

1. Did you check your router's firmware for updates? The network connectivity could be user-end if the hardware is outdated, or not updated properly.
2. Did you check with your ISP to see if they have you locked under P2P Throttling as a lot of ISP's are making this mistake with FFXIV
3. Have you created open (non-restrictive) ports for FFXIV or the hardware it runs on?
4. Have you opened up ports (non-restrictive) on your Firewall for FFXIV if your PC or even Router runs one?

This might sound like a long-shot but try disconnecting your PC from the router and remove the router from the configuration completely. Go straight from your PC to your Cable Modem (or FIOS if you're rich lol) and see if you still have the connectivity issues as another piece of hardware on your network setup may be retrieving and sending data at intervals causing the fluctuation of L.E.'s (or what I've dubbed "Lag Events").

people who don't have the issue generally are the ones who suggest configurations changes on the user end. 99% of these issues from who i've talked to in game have solid setups and no issues on their end and its a packet routing/loss issue bottleneck right around the montreal data center. It was camoflouged as ISP throttling but it really is on SE's end (or their medium in montreal where they get the traffic). I just upgraded my office backbone switch and although our ISP speed never changed everything is now lightning fast since we swapped out the old cat5 cabling to a full gigabit setup with cat6 cabling to our servers+pc's.

^yes, there is no way in Hell that it's anything other than SE's problem. No matter how you slice it, ppl won't sub if they can't play.

Tons of ppl are having this exact issue, and tons of ppl have gone thru these very basic steps. Im sure I have already said in previos posts that the basics have already been completed before coming to the forums to complain about it.

Its not something on my end, its has nothing to do with my ISP, and it has nothing to do with my home network. Even if I knew nothing about computers and networking it would be more than obvious that it is FF14 related when I can play any other online game without issue. Why can i play PoE, an ARPG without even a single ms of lag. I can even go play Minecraft on crappy private servers hosted on local networks in kids basements and not lag.

Wanna tell me now its my ISP throttling what they believe to be a P2P program?? Well than explain to me how I can still download torrents at the maximum of my download speed. There are tons of ways to test connections to a service even if you know nothing about networking.
