Having your character talk during cutscenes

Having your character talk during cut scenes? More then just nodding or sharking your head. Make your character have bigger role in the game. I mean dialog that your character says in game.

Playing years of ffxi and only having my character play small side role of the main story line or cut scene is a disappointment. I know it's kinda hard to place yourself as a character in the game but they could least give you some dialog to say then just choice commands and stand around during a cut scene.

There should be 2 types of dialog that should played out depending if your female or male and should slightly be different.

Edit: This forum been going on for few days and from I seeing is 45~50% want this and other 50~55% don't want it.

I agree that it's a bit annoying to just have your character as the 'silent protagonist' - it would be nice to have some occasional dialogue choices for your character in quest cutscenes - it seems your character communicates with others just by telepathy or something as things stand at the moment (hidden ability of the Echo perhaps?). ;)

I personally love the whole "silent protagonist" treatment

That's the same old problem: however generic your line will be, it will always end up being something OOC (Out of Character) for at least somebody. FF MMO are about immersion, usually identifying with your character, which ends being not just a bunch of polygons.
The moment they make they speak, they're taking your character away from you.

oh... lets look at other MMOs (ok the ONLY mmo to ever do this), they failed miserably after a year or so. I'm refering to Bioware's horrible SWTOR. The resources needed for this type of thing would take months upon months if not years. Its not as simple as plugging in some bum's voice into a character. its the cutscenes, the dialogue, the facial expressions, the models. Sorry for being Mr. Negative Nancy but dont ever expect this from SE for FF14.

I think I should clarify just what I meant by 'spoken dialogue' though - I wasn't actually referring to actual vocal conversations, but basically text based dialogue in the chat log, like a regular NPC.

Considering there was little actual spoken NPC dialogue in 1.0 (only in a few main scenario cutscenes), I don't think 2.0 is going to even give NPCs much spoken lines, if any. Hence spoken dialogue by player characters in cutscenes would just be out of place. Text based player-character dialogue in cutscenes would be a much better fit, even if it is old-school. ;)

That is part of what your companion is for. It's the compromise. It allows you and your companion to respond verbally to a situation without forcing a personality on the player's character. I like it that way.
