Thoughts on the Colosseum and PvP

So this sounds like and judging by the artwork, PvP wont be like WoW where its everywhere but in a specific location so people go there to do battle.

When I hear "Colosseum" I think of the Romans and their great Colosseum filled with throngs of spectators, cheering on or booing the combatants. I would love to see a spectator mode for this where people can go to watch and possibly bet on the outcomes. I'm not going to pretend to know any of the technical things that might be required to make this happen but i would like to know what you guys think.

Would you like to have a spectator mode for the PvP Colosseum?
What kinds of battles would you like to watch? (ex: 1v1 Tournament, Team fights 4v4 or 8v8 FCvFC, etc)
Would you be interested in being able to bet on matches or would this just be a possible exploit?

Pseudopsia - Gridanians vs Ant Lions for intermission

Kirito - Colosseum announcer, Uses generic terms to ID the sides. To declare victory or defeat.

Lady - 1 on 1 PvP

ZakarnRosewood - PvE survival mode

ZakarnRosewood - "Naked" arena mode with gear scattered around.

Kallera - Boats, Chariots, or Mounts

ZakarnRosewood - Terrain (if they will have things like field of view and losing sight of enemies
interrupts their chase, or elevation plays a factor in damage ala FF-tactics)

Forgo - Tournaments using the bracket system with a rare item for house or piece of gear for the winner ^.^ Make them a one time [reward] so more people can try for it and maybe hold one [tournament] once a month (rl time) with side battles [qualifier tournaments] to earn your way in.

AdorraEloom - Would like pvp in the colosseum to have 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 matches With seperate viewing areas for each and perhaps multiple instances for each.

Thoughts on PVP? We won't be doing it until 2015.

Colosseum has always been one-on-one pvp.

Not sure exactly what the Dev Team has planned as per whether there will be spectactors viewing matches... but apparently there will be a massive colliseum in Limsa, as indicated by this concept art released over a year ago...

Now that's a little harsh. I'm not a huge fan of PvP myself, but by the sounds of it, it's going to be quite reasonable in scope and the impact on PvE (balance aside, which is another issue entirely) will be minimal. Some of these suggestions are quite interesting, in fact. Making the Colosseum a spectate-able location would not be too technically difficult. I can think of a few ways to implement it off the top of my head. It depends on if they want to make PvP obey a separate ruleset from PvE.

I hope they use .hack//G.U.'s style of PvP and Colosseum. That had the coolest colosseum system and had an announcer. I don't expect there to be announcer that will say every players name, but I do hope it they will be one for generic phrases like "Here comes a new challenger" Or "Challenger 1 has won!"

Are you talking about planning for it in game or historically? Because historically its has been used for both one on one and many vs many because they want to simulate mortal combat and not every slave was a soldier or much able to wield any weapon at all. The training stables while old and well document not all slaves came from them as they had a higher price attached. And some prisoners were also thrown in as sport even though it was more so an execution with very lax rules Christians were slaughtered like this until the religion changed

Events in Colosseum could be anything: Gridanians vs Ant Lions for intermission!!!

Won't feel historical without some persecution. ^^

Great ideas so far and :P to Akira_Tenshi and KiriA500. I know it wont be at launch but they did say it will be introduced before the first payed expansion. I'm not a fan of PvP cause I suck at it, but I do like to watch and dabble occasionally.

I kinda like the idea of a PvE survival mode. Or getting dumped in an area in nothing but a subligar and gear is scattered all around the arena for the player to use, This would be a good one for those with all level 50 jobs, pick up any weapon and be able to use it.
