I noticed that the oe in Roegadyn names (like the Admiral) is pronounced as a u or oo, which is the same as in Dutch, if I'm not mistaken. Is their language based on Dutch, or is this just a coincidence?

The pronunciation of the "oe" is similar to Dutch (it's "ROO-guh-den", not "ROH-guh-den" as per Koji) but the whole thing seems to just be inspired by Germanic languages in general. Some of the words are closer how they would look in German than in Dutch as well. Which makes sense because Koji said the Roegadyn language was made in partnership with the German translation team.
My first language is German and there are very few times when I recognize any Roegadyn words as having German roots, so probably something far more archaic than modern German. Maybe Plattdeutsch? That is barely recognizeable as the same language family.
Yeah, it's closer to Old High German than anything else.
I'd still say pronunciation aside, it seems closer to German over Dutch because there's far more 'f's than there are 'v's and not a single 'ij' in sight.
I always thought it was based on Welsh, though I admit to having zero knowledge of the language.
I’ve seen a lot of people say that just because they see Roegadyn as a bunch of characters slammed together…
I’d strongly recommend reading the Roegadyn dictionary that is pinned to the lore forums. While other races have a general direction to lore-friendly names, Roegadyn offers a partial constructed language and tons of in-built customization other races don’t have. It also will help you read and pronounce Roegadyn names because you’ll see that they’re all just 2 words compounded together and breaking them up instead of attempting it all in one go is much easier.
You’ll also see how close they are to Germanic languages that way. Here are some I noticed from my smattering of knowledge of German.
English - German - Roegadyn
Bird - Vogel (Fogel in Old High German) - Folg
Ghost - Geist - Geiss
East - Ost - Ost
Steel - Stahl - Sthal
Rain - Regen - Roega(n)
Night - Nacht - Nahct
Hunt - Jagd - Jaeg
Dog - Hund - Hund
Good - Gut - Guht
Castle - Burg - Borg
These were just a few of the ones I knew from the top of my head. I tried checking to see what they’d be in Dutch since I’m less familiar in that language (I just see Dutch as German but with a lot of “ij” and “oo” and only know it through music) and at least from what I could find, the examples I knew looked much closer to German than to Dutch.
