Healer and their hidden maybe forgotten about sub role.

The Trinity of Healer, Tank, and DPS wasn't always as such, back in ye olden days their existed a fourth role however it wasn't included in FF14 possibly because it was probably meant to be rolled into Healer and forgotten about at some point but you can see spackles of it here and there. I of course speak of the Controller.

Definition:
A character with the Controller role primarily handles crowds by creating hazardous terrain and repositioning enemies, or spreading conditions and damage over multiple enemies.

All Healers seem to have a DoT ability one of them can even spread it to multiple enemies. Like Wise at least 2 of them have a non GCD AOE ability that does decent damage Earthly Star and Assize, All Healers have Rescue which is a form of repositioning, and all seem to have access to Repose, which is a form of status effect condition. What if based on their various thems and the idea that the controller aspect could be expanded upon we saw Healers role get expanded do rely more on these ideas and concepts, so yes the DPS does kind of increase but it becomes the thinking players kind of increase, how to best lay the traps that can help increase their parties overall damage by manipulating the battlefield as well as the enemies?

White Mage using some of its older elemental-based powers ideas could easily be seen as a terrain-altering elementalist, mud, quicksand, dampening the fields with puddles that add lighting vulnerability so black mages could do more damage assuming they bring back elemental damage types as a sub type of magic.

Scolar definitely sounds like the Healer who'd be using "Strategies" to debuff enemies and buffing allies over large areas of the map, maybe so long everyone remains within a certain radius of the Scholar while he's calling out these "Strategems," they get some kind of defensive or offensive buff, while enemies within such areas are rebuffed.

Astrologians could divine the stars cause celestial status effects like slowing the enemy, so long as they remain within a certain area, basically whatever statuses sound like they could work from a mystical source could go to Ast instead of Scholar, Slow, Heavy, Vulnerability, perhaps the cards played in certain orders could cause different effect, if gravity is in their realm of influence then perhaps the Gravity spell could pull weaker mobs to the singular point, this might help the tank during pulls should enemies start joining fights middle brawl from places other than where we were going.

Sage not sure, since they are already a jack-of-all-trades job in that they are influenced by several other jobs, including Summoner, White Mage, and Black Mage, not sure what they'd do to fill in this controller niche.

Any thoughts.

Maybe we'll see something like this depending on how radical the reworks are in 8.0. But it's been a long time since crowd control was a meaningful activity in FF14 (outside of extreme niches like how it's funny to put the robo turtle to sleep).

DDs show that crowd control can be good and fun in FF14. It's just the classic CBU3 problem solving system, don't fix the problem remove the system causing the problem.

Given the extreme homogenization and dumbing down of the role I wouldn't expect them to focus on CC of all things. But buffing and debuffing is definitely something that some healers could lean on more. Most notably scholar, could command the fairy to do it for instance.

I'd like to see these tools added to the game, but I don't think it'd require an outright new role in any way, shape, or form.

Any among Tanks, Healers/Support, and Damage (Dealers) have acted as controllers. It makes no more sense to siphon off control capacities otherwise granted to any given job based on its themes, etc., than to split tanks into flat damage mit vs. % DR mit, physical mit vs. magical mit, high damage but low sustain vs. low damage but high sustain, etc.

And regardless, you would first need to address the underlying reasons for why crowd control was removed in the first place:

1. Under the present amounts of incoming damage, too little of our healer or tank rDPS scales with damage avoided for at-cost control skills to be optimal, and
2. the shoddy netcode and diminishing returns systems provide very little gameplay space for interesting use of control skills anyways.

Tank, Healer, DPS are the current roles, just add Support job.

it can be debuff.. can be utility.. but still they have a DPS rotation we don't want healers situation

supports solves a problem where there is no balance currently for DPS jobs

healers worry more about empowering their heals

Tanks are fine but not dark knight

supports can empower healers heals, DPS damage, Tank tankiness

BRD/DNC are one of those jobs who are support jobs but they require a bit more work to fit

Healers have too much burden on debuff + heal and maintaining a braindead rotation.. and people didn't like it

This has literally nothing to do with whether we strip away all external utilities from other jobs to form a new "role" and everything to with people pretending healers are overburdened or otherwise sidelining their issues with red herrings like the above.

Honestly, even if it was just flavour/fluff abilities I’d love to see ‘control abilities’ become more prevalent/ actually existing lol.

As stated above though in most content I imagine people would just ignore the ‘control’ aspect entirely and just do pure dps the entire time. Unless you’re doing like ultimates week 1 there’s never going to be enough damage to justify such mechanics. And if there was, I’m sure tons of people would complain about it (“how dare you make me stop my rotation and inflict Heavy on that mob!” Lol).

Maybe they could do something like Melusine in second coil. Anyone remember when the coincounter guys would spawn and you’d have the Scholar/Summoner use Miasma to heavy the adds, then lead them into the petrify gaze aoe which would have them turn to stone, which you could then use to hide behind for…some reason I can’t remember tbh lol. But that was pretty fun and isn’t a massively complex form of ‘control’, so maybe stuff like that could be ok?
