As it stands the job is just 1-2-3 combo then press the buttons that light up. There are no resources to manage, no timers to keep track off, DoTs to refresh, buffs to maintain, nothing.
It was fun previously when we had to at least be conscious of maintainig a DoT with different combo enders, or we could pool uses of Atonement for buffs. But none of that exists anymore.
Paladin might be one of the hardest jobs in the next expansion due to the difficulty of staving off sleep while playing.

But, 2/3 of that skills are only to protect teammates (the reason, why i like paladin the most, from the tanks -even, when Gunblade and Warrior are more nice from gameplay-).
It would be nice to have a other thing, for solo content (or, when you dont need to protect someone), but the question would be what kind of thing.
Most stuff is used up for protection skill. The others for making him a spellsword.
A new gauge would probably only work with a new finisher (like with Nastrond from drg).
Or a new combo, similary to the Unlimited blade work. -

Personally for PLD I'd like a buff to the invuln cd since it's so stupidly long and for cover to get some of it's utility back so it can be used in more situations again like how it could before they changed it. Having something like that which was unique to PLD was really cool. I don't care at all about getting the old goring blade back.

for DPS, Just look at the new designs and it tells you the same story, Rpr is known for being so bare bones for a melee, Summoner the biggest rework is known for being the most easy job in the game by a mile, It's a clear pattern.
Even for healer design which is already a mess in itself, it's clear that Sage is just a more upgraded flashy scholar, Healer design has been broken for longer though... I think thats a fault of SHB healer design, At least other jobs in SHB while not the best their was still stand out jobs that were pretty tricky to master.
DT also shows the same patterns, BLM, DRG and Monk are both getting a lot of the "jank" took away for more simple and easy to understand mechs... I don't think it's just PLD it's pretty much most jobs at this point, We're gonna have very set jobs that fall under raid buffs (which have all been made even more the same because they're all 20s) It's just very obvious on how its a entire issue with the actual design rather then just PLD.
Every job is gonna make you fall asleep because complexity isn't allowed, it might upset someone if they do a tiny bit less damage for not knowing the job in depth. -
