Specifically give Paladin a Spear, and fight like Halone.
or
Give Dragoon a shield and fight like Halone.
I know the whole controversy of subjobs and why its gone, but...uh I just thought it would be kind of neat to be able to fight like Halone. >_>

PLD couldn't use spears with shields even in FFXI so I don't think this will ever be a thing (not to mention the Armoury System completely prevents it).
We need advanced jobs with branching trait options and new weapon configurations.
Balance? Who cares in a world of 2 minutes.
I want class, RPG and choice, actual identity beyond my glamour plate.
Paladin at 100 can become:
Sword Master - Drops shield for second sword.
Holy Guard - Drops sword for second shield.
Commander - Drops sword for Spear. (Which is diferent from lances which are 2 handed!)
Back in ARR I kept pushing for a branching role split for the remaining base classes that didn't have one to follow suit with arcanist/scholar/summoner. One of the branch suggestions I made was for lancer to branch into Templar which would use a 1 handed spear/pike + a tower shield and be tank role. IMO the branched job paths would have helped a bit with DF queues back then specifically for DPS jobs progressing the MSQ because they'd at least have an option to switch to a different role without leveling a separate second job. Branching progression is fairly common in MMO's along with a number of other types of single player games.
Closest thing you can hope for it is a brand new job where spear + shield will be a singular weapon. Hoplite or something.
