Dear Yoshi-P and the FFXIV development team,

I must commend you for trying to respond to player feedback on healing difficulty for high-end content. I have seen Yoshi-P acknowledge the "too hard" feedback from Abyssos Savage, despite that design being directly based on the "too easy" feedback from Asphodelos Savage, and it must be a very troublesome ongoing dilemma.

However, in my own contemplation of this dilemma, I have found that no possible profile of damage to be healed is capable of satisfying all the players who should be in Savage, not with the current design of the healer role. I am forced to predict in advance of Anabaseios Savage that there will be a significant volume of complaint about healing difficulty, because every set of damage numbers and timings you could write onto the duties would produce many such complaints.

In this letter, I aim to explain why this is so, then discuss how the current dilemma could be escaped.

Let us consider the first fight of a Savage tier, such as Anabaseios: The Ninth Circle (Savage) (P9S). As an entry point to Savage, we can both agree that new raiders, including new raid healers, should be in this duty and able to enjoy themselves. And we can also agree that veteran raid healers should be in this duty and able to enjoy themselves, at the very least because it is required to access the later duties they want to play and (in most tiers) the gear they need for Ultimate. The duty must be enjoyable to the entire skill range from "new raid healer" up.

So let us first examine the duty design from the perspective of a new raid healer, and see what that tells us about constraints on the design.

The duty should be a challenge unto the new raid healer, but not one so difficult for them that they do not enjoy the process and give up. Therefore, anything they must do in order to clear - that is, the skill floor of the duty for healers - must be designed to be something they can learn fast enough that they don't give up. (And the same is true of the other roles for their respective responsibilities.)

We can ask new raiders to show up prepared with appropriate gear, food, and potions. We can ask them to study a duty guide, made by veteran raiders who progress faster. We can ask them to know the fundamentals of their job. We cannot ask them to, say, spend hundreds of hours learning to read their co-healer or hoping for groups where the healing and mitigation from the other seven party members lines up; that is the kind of discouraging thing that will make them give up without a string of major successes during such a process, and clearing a first Savage floor is only one appropriate success.

• To clear the duty, a new healer must learn the mechanics as applicable to healers, or mechanics are failed and the party wipes. Therefore, the mechanics for the whole duty must be sufficiently easy that several hours of dedicated practice regarding mechanics is enough for our new healer to learn the duty's mechanic dance, with clearly visible progress on individual mechanics much earlier than that.
• To clear the duty, a new healer must learn to meet their portion of the heal check, or the party wipes to damage. Therefore, the heal check for the duty must be sufficiently easy that several hours of dedicated practice regarding healing is enough for our new healer to output their portion of the needed healing, even if they are in Party Finder (or Raid Finder for reclears) and do not know what their cohealer is doing, let alone the tanks and DPS. (Obviously, the time spent learning mechanics movement will be interleaved with the time spent learning healing.)
• To clear the duty, a new healer must learn to do some damage while doing the mechanics dance and the healing, or the party wipes to enrage. Therefore, the combination of the mechanics dance and the heal check must be sufficiently easy that once both are learned, and perhaps with some weeks of extra gear, doing some modest amount of damage as well neither scares them nor requires more attention to their rotation than they can spare.

All of these aspects of the duty are part of the duty's skill floor. If any of these constraints are violated, players start giving up in large numbers and complain that the duty is "too hard". If the heal check constraint is violated, healers specifically start giving up in large numbers and complain that the healing is too hard. And such complaints will be correct about those players' experiences. Sound familiar? It should, since it is exactly what happened in Abyssos.

Now let us examine the duty design from the perspective of a veteran raid healer, and see how they might also enjoy the duty given these constraints.

Our veteran raid healer has healed multiple Savage tiers and maybe even some Ultimates - maybe even all the Ultimates while current. They have practiced raid healing for hundreds of hours, if not more, and that extensive practice dotted with successes has taught them all sorts of things we cannot ask a new healer to know going in. They may even have a static, which comes with better coordination than Party Finder / Raid Finder. Nothing that is reasonable to place in front of our new healer can challenge our veteran. But that is fine - the veteran does not need to be challenged by the duty, so long as they enjoy it somehow.

So how do they experience the duty, and how can we make sure that experience is enjoyable? Well, everything that is part of the skill floor of Savage - everything we cannot make too hard for the new healer - is something our veteran is comfortable with through long practice. And part of the results of that practice is that those same things take less attention for the veteran. Between the mechanics, the heal check, and the damage they are required to contribute, our veteran has a lot of spare attention left over... and they want to spend that attention on something that helps the party succeed. (If they wanted to spend it on looking at the raid environment instead, they could do that in Normal or through videos.)

If that attention is left unused, they will get bored and complain "too easy", since the boredom prevents them from enjoying the duty. And they will be correct about their own experiences. Sound familiar? It should, since it is exactly what happened in Asphodelos.

So what might the veteran spend this attention on, to reliably both help the party and avoid personal boredom? How can we give them something optional that we do not also ask the new healer to do?

• We cannot accomplish this by having the veteran take on more of the mechanics dance, because Party Finder / Raid Finder will settle on a strategy and expect everyone to be able to do it, therefore making any particular piece of the mechanics dance either mandatory unto the new healer or useless unto the veteran.
• We cannot accomplish this by having the veteran take on more healing and mitigation, because "more healing" becomes a waste of resources as soon as the relevant HP bars are full (excluding certain cases with shields). The term "overhealing" has the meaning it does because such a thing is a waste of resources rather than a contribution to the party's success. (We both know full well that FFXIV is not World of Warcraft, neither Raid Finder nor mechanic design accommodates benching healers, and without benching healers there is a hard limit on how much healing output from a single healer is useful. Plus "switch to a DPS or be benched" is not fun and does not fit with the philosophy of only needing one job.)

These two cases of failed attention outlets also illustrate key properties of a successful attention outlet. A successful attention outlet must be "internal to the job" in the sense that it cannot require the other party members to adjust their own play in response to how much the player is using that attention outlet. Otherwise, like with the mechanics dance, settled strategies will make it either mandatory or useless. A successful attention outlet must produce something that is reliably useful to the party even when everyone is doing well and fully Best-in-Slot. Otherwise, like with added healing, the player will realize that the extra output is not helping the party succeed and stop doing it.

So what is "internal to the healer jobs" and useful to a party even in great abundance? Well, if you invent some new form of attention outlet and make it reliably work I will be very impressed, but the thing that players have and consistently gravitate to is player damage output, because completing the duty faster remains useful until the boss can be one-shot, long after the content is obsolete.

And what do the healer jobs have to output damage with? Since patch 5.0 (Shadowbringers), they have been limited to one Damage over Time effect (DoT), one "filler" instant damage spell, and precious little else. Since patch 6.0 (Endwalker), the consideration of whether an off-Global Cooldown heal can wait for a "natural" weave slot (rather than giving up filler damage to make a weave slot for it) has also been removed. Keeping a single DoT running and casting a single filler spell as often as possible is a matter of all-jobs fundamentals that our veteran healer has extensive practice with via healing alone... which means that outputting excellent damage, not merely the modest damage required of the new healer, does not take much attention for the veteran. The "skill ceiling" - the player attention and skill required to produce excellent output - is too close to the skill floor of what is required to clear.

Producing excellent damage output on a DPS, with one exception that suffers the same problem, takes much more attention than producing passable damage. Healer is the only role that becomes more boring (less attention-rewarding) the better the player gets.

This is why I am forced to conclude that no possible profile of damage to be healed is capable of satisfying all the players who should be in Savage as the healer role stands: the design of the healer jobs is lacking an attention outlet. Thus, as soon as a healer is beyond the skill floor of healing the duty, they have spare attention they cannot use and get bored, while the content system cannot practically be designed to have duties only run by players near the duty's skill floor for the interaction of that duty and their job. Therefore, the healer jobs make the duties unable to support the necessary player skill range.

While I used a first Savage floor as illustration, the same principle applies across almost all content in the game. For example, it would be of benefit to roulette queue times if highly skilled healers had attention outlets suited to dungeons and trials as well, as they would be more interested in queueing for those roulettes and thus reduce queue times. The only duties that might reasonably be designed for a narrow skill band are Ultimates; for everything else, it is important to ensure that players who are not challenged by the duty can still enjoy it.

Other players have raised many other concerns about their experiences healing, such as being blamed for deaths they could not prevent without mitigation help from non-healers. Those concerns and the experiences that generated them are also important. But this problem is fundamental to the expansion-level design of the role, and so I hope you will be able to take the feedback on Anabaseios in this light and use it to escape the dilemma for patch 7.0.

As a raid healer myself, here is a small and very incomplete list of suggestions for how you might provide good attention outlets to the healer jobs without making their skill floors in duties too difficult for new raid healers (or beginner sprouts). Others have made many suggestions for this aspect as well.

SCH: My raid job, so the one I have the most to say about.

Do not simplify the fairy under any circumstances! Instead, make it more intuitive to newer players. (Condensing the different appearances into one button, as you did with patch 6.4, is fine. The responsiveness engine work you did for patch 6.0 is fine. Having the fairy prioritize action commands over movement, as you did for patch 6.4, makes sense to prevent cooldown manipulation but still gives me concern.) For beginners, the fairy AI responding without waiting for them to notice is a great help, and for skilled SCH players... how we interact with the fairy will not make any sense without explaining neuroscience research in terms of everyday experience, that explanation is hard enough to do non-interactively without a language barrier. Ways to make the fairy more intuitive:

• Get rid of the notion of "pet potency", at least on the tooltips if not in the engine. Non-fairy ideas:

• Bring Quickened Aetherflow back, it doesn't take up a button and rewards the use of Aetherflow stacks without penalizing healing.

AST: The closest to having good attention outlets due to the card system. While it's fine to make Divination consistent and leave the seal management RNG to Astrodyne, the Endwalker Minor Arcana system is very dull.
