This is a very good thing that helps with statics trying to schedule their raids for the new tiers. Why is the live letter saying they want to break this trend? I only see more information about release date to be a good thing.

It's likely to avoid giving a hard date in case they need to push it back a week. By saying just Late May it gives them a bit of room because it could come out on the 23rd or the 30th. While it definitely sucks not to know more when we're less than a month out (like seriously it would be more understanding on the last Live Letter but not this one) I can sort of see where they are coming from.

The release date was given in this Live Letter, and all the translations I've found just say that Yoshi-P commented on the predictability of the patch release date, not saying anything about wanting to break the trend. -
