Controller cross button help

Hey everyone, I'm running into some issues with how the cross key binds for controller work. I hope I can explain myself in an understandable way. I run the game on a playstation, if that matters.

Right now I really like using the trigger hold method, with the other trigger as a modifier. It feels great in combat, and is easy to get to those back/invisible bars for an ability or two if you're weaving something, or using something intermittently in a rotation.

The issue I am coming up against is that I'd like the third bars that you get from also enabling the double tap method for things like my mount, and my teleport, but I don't want those to be the always visible bars, I want those to be the invisible bars that get pulled up, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make double tap be the modifier to bring up the invisible bars.

Right now, now matter what I do, the invisible bars are the hold modifiers, the ones I want to use all the time in combat, and the double tap toggles between the two "always visible" bars. I'd like the hold modifier to swap between my two sets of "Always visible" bars, and double tap to bring up the invisible ones I won't use all the time during combat. The only way I can see all my abilities and their cool downs on my invisible bars for holding both triggers is by doubling the bars, and that totally defeats the purpose of having a third set of bars via double tapping.

Is there anyway to achieve this? It seems like it would be a simple reversal of what is always displayed, but I can't find anything to select that does this. All the cross pattern guides and tip guides I've read don't touch upon this, they mostly focus on dealing with the clunky feeling double tap method.

Those are already activated. It makes the double tap bars always visible. The hold modifier stays invisible. :(

I thought you wanted them invisible?

But if those options don't do it for you, why don't you just swap (1) which bar numbers appear when you press which combination, and (2) which actions are on those bars?

Swap the bars in the "Display with:" dropdowns, then for each job, run the following macro:
/chotbar copy current 2 current 8
/chotbar copy current 3 current 2
/chotbar copy current 8 current 3

Replace 2 and 3 with the bar numbers for your extended bars. Replace 8 with any Shared bar number. This will swap your 2 and 3 bars. Unless one of the bars you want to use is shared, in which case you'll need to tweak that. I can give exact code if you can tell me which bar numbers you're using and which are shared/unshared.

I think I have failed to explain myself properly. All the bars I want to use during regular combat I would like displayed. I’m trying to get the functionality of the double tap and the hold method reversed. Making a macro just adds another button press if I’m understanding that correctly.

I don’t want any of these bars shared, I just want visibility for my normal bars, then the hold method bars. When I hold the triggers right now, both cross bars disappear, and they turn into the invisible bar a entered in the entire cross bar UI area. I just want it to highlight the other bars that are already on screen.

No, it doesn't sound like either of us is understanding the other correctly. Let me see if I have it now.

What you have:

• LT->RT and RT->LT bring up sets of bars that are otherwise invisible.
• LT->RT and RT->LT contain combat actions.
• You cannot see the cooldowns of the actions on the LT->RT and RT->LT bars because they are invisble.
• Double-LT and double-RT bring up bars that are displayed above / to the side.
• Double-LT and double-RT contain non-combat utility actions.
• You can see the non-combat actions during combat.

What you want:

• LT-RT and RT->LT bring up bars that are displayed above / to the side.
• LT-RT and RT-LT still contain combat actions.
• Double-LT and double-RT bring up bars that are otherwise invisible.
• Double-LT and double-RT contain non-combat utility actions.

If that's the case, you cannot do what you want. The button sequences are hard linked to the behaviors in the former list. Two major options come to mind.

1. Put the combat actions on your Double-LT and double-RT bars. Put non-combat actions on your LT->RT and RT->LT bars. You will have to get used to using the new sequences.
2. Put the combat actions on your Double-LT and double-RT bars and also on your LT->RT and RT->LT bars (set both expanded and WXHB "Display with:" to the same bars), so that they are duplicates of each other. You will have to do something else with your non-combat actions.

A macro like the one I typed out above would help you with the first option by swapping your bars so that you don't have to replace all your actions manually. It's meant to be a run-once solution, not a part of your normal play. But in your case I would recommend the second option. You don't need non-combat actions unless you're out of combat, and there's actually a feature that handles this for you:

For "Enable customization for when weapon is drawn", select just the main combat bar. For "Enable customization for when weapon is sheathed" select your out of combat bars. On your out of combat bars, don't include any combat actions except for the one or two you might start combat with. That way, your out of combat bars don't contain any actions you're not going to use without actively entering combat anyway, but as soon as you use an action that puts you into combat, you have access to all your combat actions. Your extended hold bars and double tap bars will still do what they do regardless of being in combat or out, so if the actions you would use to start combat are on those bars, you don't also have to put them on your out of combat bars. The draw/sheathe options only affect which bars are R1 cyclable for your main bar.



tl;dr: Make extended and WXHB both use the same combat bars. Make your main bar automatically swap between combat and non-combat actions depending on your weapon's draw/sheathe state.

That time connected at what I was getting at, and now I am distraught that it’s not possible.

Thanks a ton for the help in any case. The in/out of combat bars is an option, but not quite an ideal solution for me. Since it’s either re-learn the games in a much less smooth combat feel, or just be blind to a portion of your bars I’ll just take a break until it’s possible.

Why do you need to see your main combat bar out of combat though? Switching automatically to your non combat bar when you're out of combat is good, and it doesn't prevent you from accessing your combat bar if you want to look at it; you can still R1+Triangle to hard switch back to bar 1. They're not likely to add the functionality you're asking.

There is a work around, and I know because this is basically exactly what I have set up.

For ease of communication, the bars that are activated by double-tapping (and can be displayed as a second set of cross-hotbars to the sides of your main one) are known as the WXHB or Double(U)-Cross-Hot-Bar.
The setting for holding one shoulder/trigger button and pressing the opposite to bring up another set is known as the Expanded Cross Hotbars.

I use the Expanded hotbars for combat skills, as it's much smoother to be able to adjust loudouts by holding down triggers in different combinations. But these can't be displayed permanently, only the WXHB's can.
In order to have those 'hidden' skills always visible however, I have a second set of linear hotbars visible, like you'd get on PC. You can't use these with a controller, but you can place them and resize them as you like via the HUD layout settings. This allows you to set specific skills you need to keep an eye on.

It's simply a matter of setting which hotbars are used for WXHB, which are used for the Expanded hotbars, and which are used and shared for your additional 'HUD only' hotbars for visibility.

The straight bar above my HP/MP/Job gauge, shows the important skills on my Expanded hotbars that I want to have visible at all times. (I've used four straight bars here to get a sprint icon (mapped to L3 btw), my potion and Inner Release in seperate places.

Meanwhile double-tapping brings up hidden WXHB's that feature non-job specific things like mounts.

The workaround works, but still has the main issue in I just want to see both bars I use in combat without them bouncing around on-screen. It still just doesn’t flow properly visually to my eye. Sure, I could put my tank cooldowns there, and have them off to the side, but I’m liking being able to see both my sets of bars on screen and use the expanded controls to function as the WXHB, and vice versa. That way I can use muscle memory for my quick glances at each cooldown in a familiar way without having to increase clutter on screen.

Oh well; I’ll try with a keyboard and mouse, but the curser already feels like it’s covered in butter lol.
