Been reading guides and asking people, and every time I think I have it ready, boom! My portrait appears in the default style at the beginning of raids etc. This plays like a bunch of code exploded and we're engaging with pieces of it that are scattered all over the place.

Without knowing what you've done, it's hard to believe you've actually taken all the right steps or if the info you received was actually good. Try giving more detail on your situation and you might find some better help.

It has been 5 months from that post and whattaknow, this system has been broken for this long if not longer.
(I don't remember the release dates of anything as I left shortly after 6.1)

So the 6.1 version aka the beta was better than the official launch and it's garbage. This is sad. -

Changing literally anything does indeed break the code and it reverts to default. From what I heard...even as little as adding materia will break it.Quote:

So the thing I have discovered which is not obvious in any way is that if you are wearing gear that hasn't been registered with a gear set then portraits wont work, even if none of the portraits have an error mark next to them. If you do anything to your gear, such as add materia, you need to refresh that gear set and then you need to update the portraits as well.

The fact of the matter is that you have not been able to figure out how to get it to work. I am totally on board that it should not be this cumbersome, and should be very user friendly. Frustration and anger will not help you.
I had some trouble getting it to work on patch day along with most people. Another suggestion I can make is to use a healer or tank, and queue up for either Trials or Raids roulette to check if its working. There was no way I was going to confine myself to a duty of 15min+ when I was troubleshooting the system. -

I found a somewhat short-term solution, though I'm not sure if it'll work for others. What I do to make sure the portrait works for sure:
1. Open portraits and edit it
2. Change one of the settings (frame, background or accent) press save
3. Change back the setting and click save again
It seems to have worked fine for me so far.
