The whole 'One Linkshell Rule' thing...
I've been seeing this a lot lately, and while I'm not against it and can somewhat understand it, I think some LS leaders can be a bit strict about it.
I've been party to a very small group of friends ever since 5-6 years ago in FFXI, the Inner Circle. We've never been anything more than a social LS with 5-8 people on (our joke was that if everyone else left, there'd still be Kuronori holding out). While not everyone has made the move to FFXIV for various reasons (most couldn't afford a higher end PC, failed launch, 2.0 PS3 release, yada yada) I made a point to keep the shell up and running for my friends when they did decide to come back.
We currently have about 3 active members. And since the LS wasn't originally mine, I'm wary about inviting players from outside our circle of friends. So it remains a tiny social LS where the most we can do is group together for light events/parties.
So naturally, I've been looking for endgame event LS's to take part in. But I keep running into the "One Linkshell Rule" asking me to give up my other one. The reasoning is that I'd be creating unnecessary multi-linkshell drama that's unwanted. I don't really see how my small, tight-nit social LS would do that.
TL/DR: I can understand having multiple Endgame linkshells being a problem. But multiple social LS's? C'mon.
