Is it true that they only get abilities from monk/archer? That seems a bit counter intuitive, since they cast spells and all. Why not conj spells?

Because SE hates mages.
They are probably gonna save it for red mage, but it's dumb. It stupid and needs to be changed again to make sense. Thm/cjn abilities for Red Mage reqs.
Each job only has 2 classes they can get abilities from. And only 4 or 5 abilities when fully levelled.
And I think PGL's Second Wind and Featherfoot are very useful.
Much easier to hit Second Wind than cast a Cure on myself. And Featherfoot can be great to escape an unwanted bit of hate fom a mob.
Archer has a few enmity reducing moves. Useful for a powerful BLM.
I understand some of CNJ spells and abilities would be nice. Having the other elemental spells for example.
But we can still use those if necessary by staying THM.
But for an all-out damaging BLM, enmity reduction and quick fire evasion and healing is very welcome.
I love my setup of chameleon, quelling strike, second wind, featherfoot, etc for BLM, personally.
Then the mages would no longer be mages. THis argumnent has always been the weakest one made, and when they nerfed mages temproarly on XI it destroyed the classs, so try to remember that.
You have a choice on what to play, and how. A BLM is meant to have destructive powerfull spells. IF you think they need nerfing, then so does War (which odes anyway because they should not hit in abilities for what they do).
You can't simply do any fight as a mage, they lack defense and die fast. The trade off is power in spells or healing. I am sure PLD adn wars want to have powerfull damage, but that destroys the game. It becomes an extremly unbalanced role. You want defense, you sacrifice damage. You want damage, you sacrifice defense.
IF they nerf BLm any more, the game is finished.
Fire doesn't have the intelligence bonus like thundara. Fire also costs 100+ more mp than thundara as well. You'll be out of mana fast using the fire line. I bet you that Blm will be either middle or less on damage parse when you throw bosses that resist lightning.
