DPS job question

I've already chosen my Tank job for endwalker and have it max level. I'm looking at my dps job now. I've been messing around with most of them but with the limited play time I have, 3-5 hours a week usually, its hard to get a good grasp on the jobs and its going to take a long time to get them to a level where I can get a good feel for them.

So maybe a wierd question, but one that I think will help me narrow it down better. Which dps class is always a welcome addition to a group or raid? Like, when 'x' class joins, people are like, "Nice!"

Another question, which dps class has best impact on the group as a whole through utility?

I'm not partial to ranged or melee tbh.

SMN goes through an overhaul every expansion so who knows what they'll be like in November. BLM is stable and probably won't change much but they're a selfish turret, not team players.

That really only leaves you with RDM.

The thing with RDM though is that they mostly just give you the illusion of utility. They have a heal, but no self-respecting RDM should use it in party play except as a Swiftcast when there are no targets to attack. Verraise is useful but if you have to chain three or four Verraises you might as well just reset the fight.

Still, it's the only job that sounds like it fits your criteria.

Appreciate the comment. What is a RDM? A caster with a sword? Just from looks alone, I wasn't sure exactly what they were.

Red Mage. Each time you cast an ability with a cast time, you get Dualcasts. This makes your next cast instant. So, you weave your lower cast time spells (Jolt for single target, VerAero/Thunder for AoE) into your higher cast time ones. You can get a Ver[ready] proc that will let you cast either Verstone or Verfire in place of Jolt to occasionally mix up the rotation. The spells give mana in either black of white. Once you have at least 80 in each (though later, you will want them to be slightly unbalanced), you do your three part melee combo finished by a two more spells. It's more caster than it is melee, but standing in melee range is ideal. You also have two OGCD abilities to use at range and two in melee. The job flows super well and has a satisfying combo once you built the gauge. Relatively flashy.

Groups will be happy to see you because you can either Swiftcast or use a Dualcasts to use Verraise to instantly rez a healer. It can be nice for PUGs. RDM is sometimes called "Rez Mage" because of it. You also have Embolden for a physical party buff. VerCure is the strongest heal for a DPS and can make an impact. But, it still doesn't compare with a healer so you probably won't ever use it except in low level (54+) dungeons if something goes very wrong.

Another you might consider in Ninja. Just for Trick Attack. But, it is one of the most useful buffs a DPS can bring. Bring a DPS buff is really about the best a DPS can bring for utility.

WoW, Red Mage sounds really cool. I will have to give that class a try.

I've never been partial to "stealth" or "rogue" like classes tbh. I hadn't really considered a Ninja for that reason unless it just had something special to bring.

I feel from all casters rn RDM is probably the safest bet. In my experience, BLM is really cool and solid, but it's a job that requires 100% of you all the times. Any distraction and Enochian might fall off... Also you need to be aware of the encounter mechanics constantly, or else your dps might plummet if you need to constantly reposition yourself.

SMN is just a clunky mess rn for me to find enjoyable, I hope EW will address that.

Like everyone else said, most groups would love a NIN for their Trick Attack and RDM is very good to have for PUGs and for learning a fight. SMN is in a weird place, to a lot of people it can feels clunky BUT it has a great balance of damage and party-utility, being able to buff the parties damage (Aetherpact), Swift Cast rez a KOed partymember (or even hardcast in more casual content), and place a regen-effect on all partymembers when they summon Phoenix (granted, it might not always be at a useful time). However, SMN is one of those jobs that changes almost every expansion, so we'll have to see. :B

For more mildly nice jobs:
-BRDs have songs that provide small, party-wide buffs that they rotate through, a buff that increases the party's Direct Hit by 20% (Battle Voice), an ability that can either cleanse a cleanseable debuff or shield a target from a cleanseable debuff (The Warden's Paean), and a buff that reduces damage the party takes (Troubadour). BRD's main focus is to place and maintaining their 2 DoTs on enemies and rotate through their three songs, gaining different RNG procs with each song every DoT tick. You also gain points in a gauge every time you proc with a song that can be used on an oGCD attack (Apex Arrow). BRD is physical ranged.

-DNCs can partner up with another partymember to buff them (and themselves) with Standard Step and Devilment, can buff the party with Technical Step, have an AoE healing oGCD that heals everyone around them AND their dance partner (and I think both stack) (Curing Waltz), a buff that reduces damage the party takes (Shield Samba), and one of the best mobility tools in the game (En Avant). DNC focuses on maintaining your Standard Step (via a little mini-game) while gaining RNG procs from your weaponskills, which randomly grant you stacks called Feathers that you can use on one-of-two damage abilities (Fan Dance and Fan Dance II), which can then randomly proc another ability (Fan Dance III), while also randomly gaining points in a gauge from everyone under your Standard and Technical Steps to use on a powerful attack (Saber Dance). DNC is physical ranged.

-DRGs can increase the Critical Hit of all partymembers with in range (Battle Litany) and buff both their's and another partymember's damage (Dragon Sight). I'm not as versed in DRG but from what I understand, they used and maintain their Blood of the Dragon buff while, which grants them access to two stronger weaponskills that help maintain it, while also gaining Gaze stacks whenever you use Mirage Dive. Once you have 2 Gazes, you can use Geirskogul, which changes Blood of the Dragon to Life of the Dragon for a duration, changing Gierskogul into Nastrod. The job is some what positional heavy, having 2 weaponskill combos, one for rear and one for flanking. DRG is melee.
