Public Workshops

Trying to make this as spoiler free as possible...

So having worked my way through 5.4's MSQ, there's one event that raises a very pertinent question towards housing:

If a certain NPC can build an airship... why don't we have access to the very same FC workshop facilities that this NPC used?

I mean, if they can use them, then we should be able to as well.

Whatever workshop said certain NPC is using, it sure ain't a FC workshop - their build is the most illegal build we've seen so far (and not just because of its color) as it exceeds the frame capacity of a FC workshop ship by more than double.


I too would like access to this amazing workshop where we can build the airships we really want and take them out into the world as our private transportation service. Down with Highwind Skyways!

Yeah, that one scene was MORE than enough cause to change things up... especially since we should have access to that same workshop considering everything else going on.

FCs do have the ability to buy a workshop for building airships if their FC has a home, just as happened in the case of that NPC. Many FCs even build airship parts to sell to other FCs for use in their own workshops.

I think what you're really questioning is the function of airships. Airships as actual mounts are problematic from a technical standpoint, which is why we have them for automated exploration instead of player character transportation.

This has nothing to do with the mount, but the fact that this NPC built an airship, which is something that requires a workshop. And considering EVERYTHING we have done for this organization, why don't we have access to the same workshop they do?

We don't need to have access to that workshop to do what it is we do for that organization.

I don't get why you're turning this into an issue. What NPCs do in the MSQ rarely turns into side content for us, nor is there a need for it in this case when FC workshops already exist.

If I were to guess, the issue here is that not all WoLs are members of FCs with access to housing and thus access to FC workshops.


However, apparently this certain Scion NPC DOES have access to some facility where they were able to commission their own vessel (again, one exceeding the capabilities of a regular FC workshop with their Very Illegal Build.)


It stands to reason that the WoL is a very important member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn thusly... is it really that difficult to fathom that perhaps the WoL would also like to commission their own vessel from this facility that the Scions apparently have access to? Especially if said WoL isn't blessed with being affiliated with a Free Company that also has their own estate with workshop?

Cool. You now see your WoL using a personal airship in MSQ cutscenes, just like you got to see that airship commissioned by that NPC.

Was it worth it? You're still going to be frustrated that you don't get any actual game play with it.

Airships don't actually exist when it comes to game play. Think about it - have you ever actually stood on an airship with your character avatar outside of a cutscene? All you get to do is look at one from arm's length when you're at the landings in Gridania/Limsa/Ul'dah/Ishgard or those meeting points in MSQ in Sea of Clouds and Mor Dhona.

FC workshop voyages? There's no actual airship going anywhere just as there is no actual retainer NPC going out to gather items for your ventures. It's just loot tables triggered by timers.

If all you want is for individual players to have access to airship (and submersible) voyages without being in a FC, just ask for that. It's something I've suggested myself in the past. Our Squadron Barracks would be the perfect place for it to happen.

But don't bring events from MSQ into it as justification for why we should have access. While doing the MSQ, we only see a tiny part of the operations for that organization. There are far more NPCs working for that organization than we ever see walking around at its headquarters. Its contacts and financial resources are far beyond what the WoL has within lore. So no, it doesn't make sense that the WoL should get access to that same workshop for personal commissions just because we see it referenced in the MSQ.
