How would you think a hypothehtical Matador-themed Tank could work?

I noticed that among the various Tanks, the evade-tank niche is left open, and also that WVR is missing a craftable weapon alongside LTW and CUL. I think a Matador/Bulfighter themed Tank might kill two birds with one stone and create a unique tank Job.

But I want to ask how such a concept might work in practice, particularly since certain changes like Shade Shift's seem to work against the idea of evasion tanking, and since a square of cloth alone does not a good weapon make.

You can do evasion if you redefine what it means to "evade". It could be something simple like having some form of damage reduction on the next 5 attacks (i.e. gain 5 stacks, every time you receive an attack, reduce the damage received by 20% of your current health).

I wish GNB had gone this route, with abilities like Camouflage. Likewise when a certain GNB in the MSQ used "Perfect Deception". It strikes me as more interesting than the present set of cooldowns. I also wish that there was a stagger-like mechanic in this game.

Warrior would probably be a good candidate for a stagger mechanic, both thematically and because of it's selfheal capabilities. A stagger mechanic would however be a nightmare to balance in savage.

Just like a typical evasion tank would either be op or completely useless due to the nature of incoming tank damage in this game, there's a reason that the parry stat was terrible.

Yeah, you can even somewhat see the near uselessness of proc based mitigation with the Paladin's block. Fight design needs to be fairly different if you want things like Evasion, Block, Parry and even Tenacity's constant % mitigation to be useful and balanced.

For those to be useful and balanced their needs to be enough meaningfully damaging attacks to trigger the law of large numbers. If there are enough meaningful attacks you can balance a 5% chance of 100% mitigation with Evasion, a 20% chance of 25% mitigation from Block, a 25% chance of 20% mitigation from Parry and a constant 5% mitigation from Tenacity.

Stagger is basically the same as %DR. Would you be happy with abilities like Raw Intuition being changed to "For the next 6 seconds, you take 20% less damage. The damage that you would have taken is instead applied to you as a DoT over the next 10 seconds", with abilities like Equilibrium being replaced with Stagger purifying effects to prevent button bloat? There's a reason that these concepts typically exist on different jobs, powergaming fantasies aside.

It's actually relatively straightforward to balance out. What shifts the balance is if you turn it into a passive trait that you get for just breathing, but that's the same as giving a job higher baseline defensive stats than everyone else.

The issue is basically with the way tank damage works right now you're probably better off taking predictable one-time damage spikes that instantly get healed by oGCDs than constant ticking damage and making it a passive would make it too good.

as much as i loathe new tanks as they all play similarly enough, Im really feelings this idea

Armed with a Saber and Cloak probably originated from Ala Mihgo or Thavnair or whatever the FF14 equivalent of Spain is, expert at evasion and known for felling great beasts with evasiveness and using their aggression against them but unlike the other 4 tanks decked out in armor and defensive capabilities Matador or MTD for short would require some changes being purely parry and evasive based as neither stat exists.

That's a separate game design issue. If they stick to the standard invuln-swap-invuln-swap as being the extent of notable tank damage in coming expansions, they'll just drive players away from tanking. At which point, additional tanks are a moot point.
