Would a imperial mithra keep normal naming conventions pre stormblood.

So I have a little mithra white mage I made way back in the day when arr came back. Her backstory was she managed to climb up to officer status and was at, not gonna spell this right, cartenau , she quit after dalmud turned her squad into a firey pit of ashes and ran away to the city states. It not being hard to fake your death when half the population got scragged by a moon, bahamut and other fun and interesting things.

The question I always had in the back of my mind was, given the imperial common practice of stamping out any local culture they conqured, would a imperial mithra still use the normal tribe, name, part of fathers name naming conventions? Could she have kids with someone other then the nunh? Do race and cultures absorbed into the empire even have their own cultures anymore or are they just considered humans with cat ears, big green humans, etc?

They would surely use Imperial names (the Au Ra in the Werlyt questline seem to have, and they are from Garlean occupation territories). Also, she would most likely have the 'usual' Garlean mindset frowning upon gods and eikons and not worship any of the Twelve, else I can't imagine she would be able to have a real career. At the very least there would be no Miqo'te culture. But I do suspect that non-Garleans or citizens that aren't of pure Garlean blood have to face a certain degree of discrimination since the are alike to the 'Savages'.

(I'm talking about Miqo'te, though, not sure about Mithra as we haven't had those in FF XIV so far :P)

Conquered people we've seen adopt the Imperial lifestyle typically keep their forename, use the Imperial title "middle name," and have a Garlean surname (e.g. Asahi sas Brutus, Fordola rem Lupis, Grynewaht pyr Arvina, etc).

Defectors tend to drop their title "middle name" after leaving Imperial employ (e.g. Cid Garlond, Gaius Baelsar). Imperials occasionally refer to them using this previous title (i.e. some Imperials still call Cid "Cid nan Garlond," like Nero during the Praetorium) but given they no longer follow Imperial orders it's not necessary.

Garleans Imperials tend to be racist toward non-Garleans, so they'd be treated as second-class citizens regardless, and could only reach "sas."

The racial naming conventions and culture just describe peoples in their "natural" habitat, such as living in exclusive race / tribe societies. Peoples outside of those don't necessarily adhere to their cultural traditions.

... and this isn't XI, so there are no Mithra beyond a Wind-up toy from Eureka. They're called Miqo'te here, or Mystel on the First (and actually have playable males!).

If I recall, Noah van Gabranth isn't a native Garlean, but managed to achieve a rank of Legatus of the IVth Legion. I think it's possible for them to reach Van, it is just a lot harder than a pureblood would have.

This one's extremely unclear. We've been told by various sources that it is impossible for a non-native Imperial citizen to exceed the station of "sas" but yes, we have Noah van Gabranth and his predecessor / father Basch; both non-native Legatuses. This is an exception, thus I smell retcons or some other wonky shenanigans to force as many Ivalice references in as possible.

(My current theory is that Basch was a Garlean who lived outside of the Republic before Solus / Emet-Selch forged it into an Empire, then swore fealty instead of having his homeland be crushed under the Empire's heel and was rewarded for it with the "van" title... which he then somehow passed down to his son...

This is the only way I currently see to reconcile this inconsistency without retcons.)

I think it was Emet-Selch just saying "screw it" and giving the title to Bash and Galbranth regardless. Which, given he wanted to cause as much chaos as possible, sounds all too likely. We'll probably find out more when 5.35 drops though!

The one example we do have of a Seeker Miqo'te allied with another culture is Loonh Gah (previously U'loonh) of the Brotherhood of Ash. That seems to be a logical starting point - keeping the individual given name while removing all cultural naming conventions and replacing them with those of the new allegiance.

Rhitahtyn sas Arvina is a pretty good example of the most likely scenario. He's kept his old language Roegadyn first name, but taken a Garlean surname.
