"You gather NOTHING" (and the old direct hit)

Old direct hit was done away because players do not like launching a big attack and having it miss.
On a 97% hit chance.
3 burst rotation windows in a row.

That is basically collectables gathering now, but on a 99% gather chance.

Players didn't like the old direct hit system for a good reason, and SE changed it.
Current gathering could probably use some improving too. I know it's gonna take a lot of work to change up the whole gathering system like that, but please consider it. Those random chances breaking gathering chains are nuts.

You are aware that they said massive changes for both gatherers and crafters are underway for 5.1 and further 5.x patches?

Players didn't like the old Accuracy stat because it was a braindead thing that didn't enhance your play or provide any meaningful choice. You googled how much you needed, did your best not to go over that amount by too much, and that was that.

Gathering as a stat makes sense. You need to have the skill level to gather. Take a lore moment and imagine hastily ripping a flower from the ground and tearing it in half; that's a gathering "miss." Better gloves let you more carefully dig out the roots, better boots help you not trample the plants.

Besides, gathering needs to have stats associated with it, or gathering gear becomes pointless. Yeah, we all get frustrated with those 98% misses, but if misses weren't possible, why upgrade gear ever? It's not like I need HQ mats to fuel my crafting, so perception is no driving force here.

I don't think you thought this thread through at all.

If we really needed to argue whether something in the game makes sense or not, why is stuffing something like a delicate flower into your inventory to roll around with lots of sharp things not going to damage it? (You must understand actual botany is very scientific and involves lots of techniques in sampling, transporting, cultivating, and processing plants, which the goblins would do better than us for their advanced equipment.)
Why do these aethersands when mixed into suspicious potions make players enrage and do more damage during burst phases?
Why do melding little pieces of coloured rocks into my gear improve my eyesight/accuracy?

I can go on and on. The point is, with all due respect, I don’t think you have thought about it more thorough than I did either, and I highly disagree with looking at the issue from the main standpoint of lore reasonability, because lore appropriateness is a flimsy way of arguing outside of strict FF worldview stuff, and because this is primarily a quality-of-life problem where normal gatherers cannot compete with bots who don’t care if they miss on a random gathering cycle or not.

And how is this new gathering stat not ‘brain-dead’? Because you have to choose between it and perception? Because swapping out 2 only statistics, for the 4 in combat gear, suddenly makes it not brain-dead?

Harmonea gave a second, non-lore related reason: gear upgrades. If you did away with Gathering and Perception, what point would there ever be to upgrade gear beyond the base gear for each level-cap—if even that? What would be the point of gathering materia and melding gatherers? There would be none, so the solution was to give DoL classes certain optimal stay thresholds to meet to give them the highest possible gathering chance. Most end-game gathering involves capped rates of 95% when you reach the stat thresholds. Spare 50 GP, use Field Mastery I, boom: 100% gathering chance. It’s not that hard.

This really isn’t something that needs to be changed the way the developers reworked Accuracy.

The notion for having to use a skill to improve chances of obtaining an item, is ridiculous. This is not like dps where missing one hit doesn't mean you automatically fail the fight or lose a portion of your rewards. This is gathering. You don't clear on enrage, you only receive less stuff gathered. Other players won't pick up the dps slack for you, you lose an item you lose an item, pure and pointless as that.

If there were multiple gathering classes and they had some kind of cross-role ability which helps them boost their gather rate before their gear ensures they automatically qualify for it yet, it would still be ridiculous. It would be deleted and the innate buff worked into the class similarly to the healer protection skill. But miner and botanist are carbon copies of each other, and fisher is the class no one likes. The problem has "dug itself into a hole".

Further more, if you tried to comprehend what I express if your job depended on it or something aka. bit more effort, you would see that I rather have some disdain for the secondary attributes and gear system we have which I think is, "brain-dead". This extends to materia and melding stuff too. It's just a small inconvenience and a necessary ritual to joining the end-game economy and content. It's all just natural proceedings. There is no actual point to it. You could argue that even playing games don't have a point at all, but that's a bit too far, games have art and stuff. Melding materia, unless you count socializing as something very important and participating in the in-game economy and melding for others etc. is that worth it, it is, just a meaningless ritual.

So larger changes might actually be necessary. SE is already doing their quick-gather thingy.
