They showed a world reveal trailer at e3 where one of the Ascians reveal that Zodiark and Hydaelyn are actually the oldest living primals! Hard to believe! The implications of it are staggering.
That E3 reveal though.

Honestly, I've been kind of aghast at how spoilerriffic the ShB trailers have been. It's a big change from the prior expansion trailers - they sometimes showed spoilers, but for content that had ALREADY HAPPENED, like Nanamo's poisoning in the HW trailer. ShB's trailer is the first to give so many things away...

If they chose to put up the trailer that way, I'm pretty sure they want to confuse us, that's what they have been doing since the beginning of ShB teasing.
The only thing we know is that we are going on the First to fight the Flood of Light, becoming the Warrior of Darkness. We don't know when, how, why, with whom, how long it will take...
