Is Puglist Turning Into Monk?

Hey all, sorry if this is a dumb question.

I'm a brand new player, but was a huge fan of FFXI. I've been reading up on all the information regarding FFXIV 2.0 and all the patches in between. I saw that Monk job quests will be introduced, but I'm not too sure what that means. Is Pugilist being re-named "Monk" or is it a brand new class? Also, the words "job" and "class" keep popping up, but are they synonymous?

Just confused. Like should I bother going pug if MNK was what I wanted in the first place. AM I LOOKING TOO FAR INTO IT?! @_@

Monk will become an advanced job for Pgl. You'll go from being a Pgl until you do a quest once you're a certain level then become a Monk and learn new abilities.

AHAH! That makes sense! I must have missed that explanation, I just saw the breakdown of the job quest introductions. So your class will become a job once you reach a certain level and complete the quest? Kind of reminds me of the unlockable jobs from FFXI. Or like... hmm. Ragnarok Online! Like Archer to Hunter to... Sniper, I think was the next step. Makes sense!

And thanks for the welcome! I'm enjoying it so far. Lots of stuff to learn, but I'm going to get set up with a linkshell and hopefully, have an easier time getting acclimatized. :3

It's more like you unlock the job. You can turn off and on your job because there are pros and cons to each.

As Dawwichan said, classes (pgl) will use cross classes abilities than jobs

Classes like Pugilist can use some abilities from other classes like cure from Conjurer class.
Monk will be unlocked from Pugilist and it will be something that you can turn ON and OFF at will.

Monk will use all the Pugilist abilities + some exclusive to the Job "monk" but will be unable to use other class abilities like "cure".

The thought behind this is to make Classes like Pugilist more "solo" centered while the Jobs like Monk will show their strengths in parties where white mages will take care of curing etc.

Good to hear this - seems this will promote more partys with each job that depends on and needing the other job's support. A full team. I hated the idea of a bunch of pugilist going out playing as conjurers.

As it turns out, Monk can still use 5 abilities from 2 other classes (Archer or Lancer) after all.

Chameleon, Decoy, Quelling Strike, Hawk's Eye, Invigorate, Blood for Blood, Keen Flurry.

If this is how it is, Mnk is going to be one hell of a DD.
