Could FFXIV Version 2.0 take place in a parallel world?
I'm in agreement with those who suggest that the Wandering Minstrel NPC who gives you your goobbue mount is an in-game representation of Yoshi-P. (For more information about that, see this thread.)
Anyway, I happened to be passing Red Rooster Stead today, and I decided to talk to Wandering Minstrel Yoshi-P one more time. This is what he says.
"Many a night, when I stare up into the boundless heavens, I will oft catch a glimpse of a world not quite our own...
Different, yet eerily similar. Is this the Void, or is it something else?
I suppose time will tell..."
Now, maybe Yoshi's just making a vague reference to the upcoming world redesign (which likely has to do with an impending destructive event, but I don't want to enter too far into spoiler territory), and the rest is just flavor text. But just for fun, let's pretend that he's actually hinting that the 2.0 world--with its Crystal Tower, Garlean base in Northern Thanalan, ancient tower in the middle of a lake in Upper La Noscea, and time-worn forest ruins--really is a kind of parallel world. I mean, a destructive event by itself could explain a world full of craters and destroyed cities, but the concept art that was delivered to us depicts all sorts of never-before-seen structures as well. And for the most part, they don't seem to be newly built.
In any event, this is a fantasy game, so there are all sorts of out-there ways for a story/lore team to explain a massive map redesign. There's an excellent chance that my guess is completely off the mark. BUT... I do know one other guy who totally buys into what I'm saying here.

Plans for a History Channel documentary are already in the works.
