Pattens Colour Mix-up

Hello! ^^

Not sure if this should go in Localisation or items since I'm not sure if the name or icon is wrong, but I'm going to start here and let it be moved if needed.

Could I convince someone to move this over to GAMEPLAY/Items? After a little bit of research (aka a Wikipedia search) and some enlightening comments, I think this is more of an issue with the colors that dyes produce and/or the areas that dyes affect than the names.

Check out the icons for Mahogany Pattens. It seems that:

"[item=8080324]Mahogany Pattens[/item]" displays "[item=8080325]Mahogany Pattens (Blue)[/item]"
"[item=8080325]Mahogany Pattens (Blue)[/item]" displays "[item=8080324]Mahogany Pattens[/item]"
"Mahogany Pattens (Green)" displays "[item=8080326]Mahogany Pattens (Red)[/item]"
"[item=8080326]Mahogany Pattens (Red)[/item]" displays a tan-ish colour, which I assume should be "Mahogany Pattens (Green)"
"[item=8080327]Mahogany Pattens (Brown)[/item]" looks right.

I don't have any job that needs these, so I can't say whether the problem is in the name or the icon. Sorry if this is in the wrong place! ^^;

P.S. How do you make Mahogany turn blue? Isn't it a reddish wood? >.>;

I think the color is actually the cloth that adorns the wood.

That's it. It's pretty odd, though. For me, the colour displayed on the item's name should be predominant on both icon and equipped item.
On a side note, this happens aswell for other pattens like [item=8080320]Oak Pattens[/item] (i.e. [item=8080323]Oak Pattens (Black)[/item] are light brown, almost golden).

One would think it not too difficult to make the thumbnail color correspond to the actual item color >.> I can do this with Paint for the love of The Twelve...

Well, after a wee bit of looking around, I have discovered that a patten is not really a shoe, but an "overshoe" used to protect shoes/feet from the mud/dung that would cover the ground.

So really, it seems right that only the patten itself (basically, what's between the sole and the ground) should be made of mohagany, rather than the shoe, which holds true for these models. I happened to acquire a pair of my own recently, but got lucky while screenshotting them as I discovered two other pair right next to me. ^-^

However, I'm really more confused than when I started. Raldo was right that the color in the name is in fact that little section of felt (guessing based on materials). But that's not really a good solution because, as Umo pointed out, the color displayed in the name should generally refer to the predominant color, which is that of the boar leather, which is also affected by the dying process. Based on this, Boar leather + blue dye = white, etc. If anything, the leather's colour should be the title in the name. That brings up an even bigger problem, though--the all-purpose dye used changes the leather to a random color. o.o So the recipes are messed up too..

Could I convince a mod to move this to the Items area?

I have some Kecks that are (blue), when worn they look white, but the neutral version of those kecks is a brownish-white, so maybe it implies a lighter shade of blue

There's a really fine line between light blue and white. Cotton undergarments, for example, really push that line. That's a different story though.

Though I don't try this at home often, when I attempt to dye a brown material with blue dye, it normally turns a very ugly purplish-grey. One of the problems with these is that the item is named after the little strip of cloth, rather than the leather, which is by far the most prevalent color. That felt's color does match the dye, and the name. However, I think most of us feel that the color that makes up the shoe (rather than a strip that basically looks like a sock) should be the color in the name. Since most browns have more red than anything, the middle color is normally a little bit purple, but that can vary. In any case, it's not white. >.>;

If the dye didn't affect the leather, I would understand why the item was named after the small dyeable part. But the dyes do affect the leather, and not exactly in logical ways. :x

Even more importantly, how does the un-dyed equivalent turn blue if it's not dyed? Are boars blue?

The pattens are named after the color of the cloth because the dated recipes only used the color of the socks to determine the specified color of the item.

It would be nice to get a more accurate color, sure, but if you're asking for that, it no longer lies in the realm of localization.

And yes, if you've seen the boars out and about, they are indeed blue. Why does the leather show up as brown in the item list? Maybe it's blue on one side and brown on the other, and the little item picture happens to be showing the brown side.

I can only hope that come 2.0 we get a little window that displays the actual 3d model prior to crafting (or purchasing).

Indeed. I already asked in my next-to-last post and the OP for them to move this to the items section, but I don't suppose anyone's going to see that. /sigh

Preview would be amazing. I actually used someone's retainer that was selling these shoes to confirm their colour before I bought them, but that's not exactly a good way; too much reliance on circumstance. As stupid as it sounded, I didn't want a red pair of shoes going with a green outfit. SMN AF in XI was enough christmas elf for me. x.x

Edit: And if leather is actually blue, then it makes even less sense that a blue shoe mixed with all-purpose blue dye would create a whitish shoe. >_>;
