PVP
I've never really taken PVP seriously in MMO's... I never did PVP in my 750 days of FFXI, and I only spammed BGs and Arena in WoW for decent entry level raid gear.
Over the last few years I've grown to be a much more competitive gamer and having a well balanced PVP system actually does interest me. It won't break the game for me if it's anything like FFXI's PVP but if it does have a proper ranking system and a proper battle system it would be fun to actually compete for the top rank.
14's current system wouldn't be able to handle PVP but with the new engine perhaps something fun, addicting, and competitive can spawn from 2.0 that can give me something to work towards that requires me to outsmart and outlast other top PVP players.
I've watched a lot of WoW Arena and people actually go in not for the gear, the titles, or the rewards, but just to win. Like a game of chess. This kind of stuff always intrigued me, and it's highly entertaining to not only take part in, but watch (opportunity for a larger community).
There are a lot of things that go into proper PVP and I know a lot of old FFXI fans probably don't care too much for direct PVP and write it off as a joke. When done right, PVP can be more fun then spamming raids for gear to spam more raids.
I just wanted to toss up ideas on what we want to see and what we don't want to see in FF14's PVP.
-Fast Queues
-Ranking system based on wins.
-Stat counter? Keeps track of kills, deaths, wins, losses, most used abilities. Which maps you perform best on.
-Variety in types of PVP. Capture flag, territory, battlegrounds, arena.
-Variety of assymetical maps. Maps that have 2 similar starting bases, but everything in between is customizable.
-PVP currency to purchase PVP items
As well, Titles and Achievements which I'm sure they'll give to every miniscule thing you can do in FF14.
How they are going to work out the balance between the classes I have no clue. I'm assuming that's the biggest problem they'll need to find a solution to.
Any good ideas for 2.0's PVP or should they just scratch it and focus more on other aspects of the game, assuming the majority of the fan base don't enjoy pvp?

I like PvP and I am happy to see it being added for those of us that enjoy it. They are keeping it to its own areas and it is completely optional.
For PvP I think it would be cool if they had arenas that people could watch, so even if you aren't interested in doing PvP you can still watch two people have at each other! Maybe add /popcorn emote!
I'm not sure they if they are doing this or not, maybe they are? They could also add in components to the PvP areas that you can participate in without actually fighting other players - such as repairing buildings/equipment or gathering materials or other stuff. I know GW2 has things like this which seems like a really good idea for those that aren't interested in fighting.

I'm all for PvP. Creatively of course with some form of strategy and/or teamwork. I like to participate and to spectate. Would be surprised how much you learn from watching others compete...
The floating arena idea that's in the 2.0 artwork definitely was something I look at as interesting. Possibly fun?..

Though my death to kill ratio would probably be something like 9/1 i'd be interested in trying out PVP, the only turnoff I really have towards pvp is free-for-all PK in world zones, and PK zones that have non-PVP related single-player content, these are things that just seem like a bad way of doing PVP to me, on the side of PVP though, I've always been attracted to the concept of the Arena, not simply as something to duel in, but also as something to watch as a spectator.
Mind you when I say I'm against free-for-all PK zones, and PK zones with non-pvp content, I don't mean I'm against frontlines (is that what they called it?) but rather what I'm against is some random NPC sending me to gather pubic-dwelling miteling eggs and someone showing a spear in my back while I'm trying to reach-around Shaula.
-
what I'll really like is an event where it is PvPvE against Garleans, and also a PvP region to take control over for grand company conquest, which in return grants rewards such as resources etc. For none PvP'ers they could implement quest that helps those in the front line.

PvP has destroyed the class balance of every MMO I have ever played.
-
They need to do something similar to what they did in XI with PvP... although classes where still unballanced.
Change the effect and potency of ability on PCs only not NPCs that way PvP does not screw up PvE. PvE > PvP, especially for a FF game.
-
As long as no classes get nerves because of it I am cool w/ it.
This is literally what I hear in other MMOs w/ PvP:
WHAAA WHAAAA SE YOU NEED TO NERF THIS CLASS BECUZ I CAN'T BEAT IT!!! IF I CAN'T BEAT IT, IT IS OBVOUSLY OP.
SURELY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG W/ ME.
-
I would be interested in group PvP and 1 on 1 duels. It would also be cool to see PvP gear you could earn with points received from successful player KOs.

There are still battle adjustments scheduled for April in 1.22. The fact the the adjustments have been pre-planned this far in advance could mean any number of things, so threads like these where people assume unknowable things are just semantics.
