Cover vs Stormsplitter?

I had a pf in susano ex last night where the PLD was using hallowed ground for the first Stormsplitter. Was funny watching that horrendous slash debuff bounce right off them. Neat trick I thought. Got me thinking if I Cover them on the next, would it be effective also. Has anyone tried this? Would the OT receive the debuff? I'm thinking it would help negate the dip in dps when tank swapping.

There is no dipping in dps because of Shirk. See the top speedruns, the tanks don't even start pull with tank stance because of NIN and Shirk. Tank swaps are made so much easier.

Back in Titan EX, Covering the MT prevented it from receiving vulnerability from Mountain Buster. Maybe it works the same.

I tried covering the other tank, I took the damage, they still received the debuff. Not sure if it was intentional or a bug.

Thank you. Amazing, I didn't expect anyone to test the idea. Guess we'll leave this one buried if it doesn't negate the buff.

Cover only take 80% damage iirc so the 20% remaining prolly gives the debuff.

Cover "reduces damage by 20%", not "redirecting only 80%". The covered target takes no damage at all.

Me and my PLD tanking partner have had some really weird instances with cover, he decides to be clever and a sweetheart by covering me for a few tank-busters/mechanics and he always dies from 100% to 0%. First was Susano normal he covered for Stormsplitter and died, second was Shinryu Akh Mourn and lastly was the new Alte Roite when he uses Charybdis which reduces all partys hp to 1%.(I did not get hit by this ability because of cover Lul) In every instance he got full to zeroed and we wondered if it was some kind of bug? :rolleyes:

IIRC correctly, Cover ignores any additionnal self mitigation. So, taking a tank buster with Enhanced Cover is like taking it with only your tank stance. It could be useful if your max HP + stance was enough to survive (Something a MT should probably not have since he's hit constantly), but for really big hits, it will get you killed.

One thing I don't know is if the covered target's mitigation is applied before redirecting the damage.

Nah, cover should work with your mitigation. Like, for example, you can block covered hits. Damage does seem to bypass HG sometimes though - I think this mostly happens when you're getting hit by an AOE and taking two hits.
As for Stormsplitter, it's very possible that he dipped into its range - I'm decently sure it's a line AOE attack. If he did that while covering, he'd take 2 hits and get gibbed.
