Eorzea's Eldritch Horrors
I decided something based on Lovecraft would be fun, and it really was!
-Character name: Darquesse Vile
-World: Lich
-Prize: Anything, I did this for fun
The temple was like any other on the outside; run down and ancient. I was particular to shambled and ruined things, it was as if I would look upon them and see the history of this overwhelmingly old construct. The walls, broken down and partially destroyed. The inside just as ragged. I moved along the far wall, running my hand along the rough stone surface. I noted the pictorial carvings. Not any language I recognized. Though... As my eyes drew across the images; I had such strange feelings; more so inklings. Peculiar indeed, though nevertheless I continued perusing.
The darkness crept in; smothering the light of my torch somewhat. Was it my imagination? It had to be. My skin prickled; hairs standing on end. There was an idea in the back of my mind; I likened the sensation to a voice, saying 'turn back.'
It had to be some queer effect of this building; the atmosphere or the age. It was clearly older than any temple I had seen in Eorzea. The symbols and engravings sent chills down the spine. Images of monsters and creatures clearly from the wildest of imaginations. I had seen many a frightful thing in my time as an adventurer, though for whatever reason it was this temple in particular that had this... Feeling.
The more I examined the walls of this temple the more I thought. It was almost as if I was subconsciously attempting a distraction; alongside my body's strange reaction to this place. As if I was staring down a large predator. I looked back, waving the torch as I turned. Dancing shadows cast on the walls took on the oddest of shapes – my mind conjuring alien images from nothing. I could not see the exit. A deep breath.
After a deeper excursion of the temple, I found myself stumbled upon a dais of sorts. On it stood a statue. I recognized the design from the symbols on the wall, and I felt the small hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. This monster was... Unlike any monster. It defied reason... But it was a simple statue! No longer an inkling; I could hear the whispering of dead civilizations in my mind. Behind the statue – a staircase leading down into utter blackness. Beside the staircase a skeleton. More became visible in my torchlight... Skulls bashed in... No... Blown from the inside? More... At least three dozen ancient corpses. I stopped. My gaze fell upon the blackness of that staircase once more. My breathing ragged, I felt... The sensation of eyes upon me. The whispering intensified. This being was no primal... It was older. I made out words within the whispers. 'ancient', 'madness'... 'understanding'. I looked again upon the corpses of a people clearly worshiping this... Thing... To look upon such madness would be to surrender one's sanity. To attempt understanding would be far worse. My torch hit the ground as I ran. Far from this eldritch insanity.
