Question about FFXIV running @4k & @60hz reliably: Please assist
First off I would like to ask if we have an area in on the forums where we can talk about our rigs and setups and what works and what does not? I could not find one specifically for this. Tech support did not look like one to me.
On to my main point. I have a small form factor pc that can only run one gpu period. No room for a second one even if I wanted to. The other big issue is because of the SFF nature of the pc I must use a reference design blower that expels air out of the case. Finally my other requirement and it's a big one is the GPU cannot pull more than 230TDP overall. So far so good I was allowed to installed Nvidia GTX980 this past November so everything was cool.
I say cool till I got this idea I would try and 4k game and do it at 60hz. Much to my shock that my pc was not going to do this till I was able to double the install to 2 gpu's running sli. Again not an option so I just figured I would enjoy my games at 1080p and at 120hz. Which tbh is not really all that bad.
I still would like to get a taste of 4k so I kept my ears and eyes open for some new toy from either AMD or Nvidia. I didn't care who did it first I just wanted one of them to do it. Do what? You might ask. Make a new chipset that can game at 4k and at 60hz on one gpu. Nvida has claimed such a beast and it is called GTX 1080. Of all numbers to give it seeing as that is what I am gaming at right now 1080p lol.
Now that is the official hype from Nvidia. But as I looked around the internet and googled if 60hz 4k gaming was doable on a single gpu stuff like Titan x and sorta came up over and over.
I'm going to ask the question here straight out as I am technical but not in the sense that I can weigh all the theory data and make assumptions as to what a device might or might not do.
1) Can the new GTX 1080 run FFXIV on max settings at 4k and at 60hz with no drop in framerate below 60hz with today's settings in the game we have?
2) If not what do you recommend turning off to maintain framerate?
3) Seeing as FFXIV is not as demanding as many other newer games on the market do you think as 4k textures get added and other various ui tweeks that 4k gaming at 60hz will be even harder than today on FFXIV?
I would be very interested in hearing someone technical opinions on my situation.
Good youtube video reference thank you.

I thought that was an excellent video. Taking from that and what else I have read then the new gtx 1080 may not be quite up to the task to single hand perform 4k @ 60hz on max settings. It might keep 60hz or 60fps as most ppl call it with some tweak settings.
Any further suggestions on what else besides the resolution and refresh rate that might impact stable fps and can be toned down without too much sacrifice on quality? The whole point in going 4k was for more eye candy for myself. Can't say why others might want it. It's not mando but it is something I would like to try and do. I read an overclock might help stabilize the frame rate. And from what I read you can do a decent one on the core clock and memory on air. Being my situation I am stuck with reference cards for now on this SFF but that's not so bad I actually don't mind. Simplifies my gaming setup sometimes on games that fuss over sli or crossfire.
