Not sure if design flaws or just EU joke

Hi guys,

I'm very new to this game but having a blast. I have just but one issue, no matter what I do 90% of AoE from ennemies hit me even though I'm clearly out of the specified area. Are you guys also having this problem? I'm just considering 2 options because I have sometimes, but rarely, saw some streamers on twitch on the ffxiv channel (sry I watch more old school speedrunner) with whom this mechnism works fine for most I've see and I have a very good internet connection with very low ping/lattency from anything around EU. So I was wondering perharps if the recommanded server for EU is actually not in EU if so that would explain both my lattency and the delay from de AoE display... I mean in 2015 would that be really serious as a professional choice to base one continent's server not in this continent? I can't believe this that's why I'm posting this in case there is another explaination. Please enlight me :cool:

We are getting EU servers this year but you should be getting around 110 - 130 ms to Canada where servers are based and that is completely playable for MMO. At this moment I would say there are 2 possibilities. Either you arent leaving the orange circles before they disappear and you get hit by them, because you get the damage when orange circle disappears not when the animation of skill happens. Second option is that you are one of the unfortunate people who have ISPs with bad routing to America. Some of them should be stated in Technical support section in a few threads.
I would suggest contacting your ISP or Square Enix support (trough web chat or phone, not trough email). Sorry to be a bearer of bad news.. :D

The EU servers are not currently based in EU, although they've been working on setting up for that and the change over will happen later this year.

In the meantime, there are a lot of EU players who're able to play fine. One of the biggest misconceptions about AoEs early is that you need to be out when the cast bar finishes, not when the visual effect occurs or when the ground marker vanishes. If you're getting out of those before that though and still getting hit that's definitely on the side of unusual.

It's also particularly unforgiving on the overworld due to the fact the overworld tracks positioning less frequently.

What Garlyle said. It's the cast bars that matter to get out of aoes not the animations. Use focus target to be able to always have the cast bar visible even when not targeting the boss. Also as a black mage you do get a few of skills to help you with not taking too much direct damage - manawall and manaward(they used to be take no damage of that type but now they are just defensive cooldowns) - along with aetherial manipulation to quickly move about(though since your position won't get updated until you stop this can still cause you to get hit).

the other thing I don't see mentioned is what you are playing on, the Playstation 3 also has this problem, you actually have to move much faster on PS3 out of the AoE markers and there is some sort of a latency on the system especially on higher end fights like primals.
